Santa should bring me an 8-core 2009 Mac Pro daughterboard freshly fitted with two custom 3.33 GHz Xeons to swap out with the 2.66 GHz Quad in this machine, and 32 GB of RAM would be nice :p

with the space available in that casing, one could easily fit a Mac Mini logic board and components, and maybe hook it up to the internal display with a little solder work ;)

weekend project, anyone?

While you are at it, put a quad desktop mobo in an Apple II case, and I'll be the first on your doorstep.

Right now I'm having the worst time deciding between a Mac Mini, with a shuffle and a new Nano (with the savings), or a MacBook Pro 13". I want a mac, haven't used one since System 9 was around. My last mac was a PowerPC clone, and I'm really dying to get away from the mess that is Vista and XP for my home setup.

The reason that I want either a Macbook or Mini: 1) I already have a monitor and 2) I want some portability and the iMac is anything but portable when you have to drive 7 hours to your parents house for a visit and take your mac with you.

Lol I'm currently making a website called "Which Mac is for you?". It's nowhere near finished though LOL. Do you need a big screen or not? MBP 13" is way 2 go if you have to take your Mac with you :D But if you'd like a big screen then either a Mini or a bigger screened MBP

4 x 160GB Intel X-25 SSDs in RAID 0
2 x 2TB Western Digitals
Dual 30" ACDs

17" MacBook Pro

Yes I think the MacBook PRO might be a good idea there because you could plug it into the 22" screen when your at home and when you need to go to your parents house just take the Book on its own :D

Aaah I've between waiting for one of these :D

If it doesn't exist:

Mac Pro7,1 Tri Intel Xeon Quad Core Processors @ 3.8GHz, 2.2GHz FSB, 24MB L4 Cache. 64GB DDR5 1600MHz ECC SDRAM, 2x GTX 320 2GB, Intel X25-M G2 320GB (Snow Leopard), Intel X25-M G2 160GB (Windows 7).
(Overclockable by 50% :D)

If it does exist:

Mac Pro4,1 @ 2.93GHz, 32GB DDR3 1066MHz RAM, GTX 285 1GB, same SSD setup.

And either way, one or three 30" screens :D...

I might like a MBAir too :D and a MBP 17"

I can't wait to see what's going to be next for the MP.
Bit out of my budget though

Well, no firewire is a bummer, but I can live with that. Another USB port would be nice, although other than that and the glossy screen it's a fantastic computer. It's actually quite speedy, does 95% of what I want in a computer and it's darn convenient to carry around so it gets used everywhere.

The only real downside to it is the battery, it only lasts about 3 hours. But I'm thinking about spending a bit to get the cheapest model HyperMac, since that has 150% the capacity of the MacBook Air's battery it should give me about 8 hours real life total battery in conjunction with the internal. Despite the few downsides, the MacBook Air has become my main computer and if I got the HyperMac and converted my externals to USB, then I wouldn't even have a need for the MacBook Pro.

The mac that Apple refuses to make. Yes, I'm talking about the model that would fill the infamous Apple Gaping Lineup Hole!!!.

A mac that would that gaping hole between the low end iMac and the high end Mac Pro, a quad core Mac that has expandability! Now there's a Mac I could really use. Don't shoot the messenger but the iMac is low end, just a small notch above the Mini. The fact is, there really is a huge jump between the Mini/iMac and the Pro.

I really don't care for iMacs (starting to hate them a little more, day by day), the Mini is a cool design and i could use my ACD with it but the Mini doesn't have enough graphics horsepower.

If Apple would put decent quad cpu and graphics in the iMac, as well clean up its ridiculously ugly bezel, I would consider an iMac.

Wouldn't that be the quad core Mac Pro? It's only $300 more than the high-end iMac…

QuantumLo0p
Sep 27, 2009, 11:08 PM
IMO that price point is appalling for quad core. Perhaps a price in the middle of the iMac line, $1499-$1799, would be realistic for an i7 rig with expandability. The big problem with the iMac is the heat problem from using standard processors.

Apple has positioned itself as hardware company with large profit margins so I am not going to hold my breath for competitively priced hardware. It's just the way it is. Apple has surprised us before. Perhaps someday they will sell OS-X so people won't have to build Hackintoshes.

A fully loaded 24" iMac w/ external cinema display (whatever is biggest!). The Mac Pro is tempting, but I really like the form factor of the iMac, and a fully loaded Mac Pro would be way more than I need!

For memorabilia, I'd like the Mac used in "ST:The Voyage Home" that Scotty uses to formulate "transparent aluminum."

For fun, the warehouse bank of 1100 dual 2.3GHz Xserve G5s that was configured by VT into a low cost "supercomputer."

Finally, I don't think I'd need Steve, just his current computer that has the R&D and executive directives, so I can plan my Apple investments for the next few months. :D
