Is my HD going?

I find recently (or maybe all the time, I don't remember), my HD is heating up and causing quite the spike in CPU. Whenever I open finder and click on pretty much anything (Documents, Pictures, Macintosh HD) my CPU spikes and if I keep going the fans start going on. Even downloading something on Firefox raises my CPU quite a bit.

Is this normal or is there a problem with my HD?

a hdd issue would not cause a spike in cpu

Have you checked Activity Monitor? If you can find out what's causing the spike, it'd help in relieving the problem.
