Adobe today announced (http://www.adobe.com/aboutadobe/pressroom/pressreleases/200909/AdobeReleasesPhotoshopElements8forWindowsandMac.html) the release of Photoshop Elements 8 for both Mac and Windows, bringing significant updates to the company's top-selling consumer photo editing software.Photoshop Elements 8 for Mac now includes all of the intelligent photo-editing options as the Windows version. In addition to Photomerge Exposure, Recompose and Quick Fix previews, Photoshop Elements 8 for Mac features Scene Cleaner for brushing away unwanted elements, such as tourists or cars, from a series of photos to create the perfect scene. The Smart Brush helps users apply incredible effects to a specific area of a photo with a single stroke and Touch-Up brushes make common editing tasks quick, such as whitening teeth or making bright blue skies. When creations are ready to be shared with family and friends, users can display their photos on the Web with gallery templates or personal Web pages, by e-mail and on CD or DVD.While the Windows version is available today, the Mac version of Photoshop Elements 8 will begin shipping next month. Pricing is set at $99.99, although Adobe is offering a $20 mail-in rebate for certain purchases made through October 31st. Full rebate details are available in the terms and conditions (http://store.adobe.com/store/en_us/popup/software/photoshopelmac8/rebateterms.html).

Anyone see anything on how well it will integrate with the iPhoto database? If at all?

The blurb makes it sound like it does, but we'll have to wait and see. Hopefully they provide a demo like they usually do.

did we just skip version 7 completely?
any upgrades for version 6 owners?

How is this any better than iPhoto or Picasa?
Besides costing more?

Photoshop has always had near perfect integration with iPhoto database.
iPhoto makes it easy to integrate any image editor so this is nothing special about Photoshop, Gimp can work the same way. The is a preferences field where you specify the "default image editor" and then iPhoto will launch and hand off an image to whatever program you specify.

My question as well. Already paid $100 for 6, but would be interested if an upgrade price is somewhat reasonable

I searched all over the Adobe site for upgrade pricing but can't find it. It looks like there's a $20 mail-in rebate to make the product $79.99 but that it's for new purchases only.
I would hope that for owners of versions 6 & 4 upgrades are priced at either $49.99 or $59.99.

There is NO upgrade pricing for Photoshop Elements. Never has been. It just comes in one flavor whether you have a previous version or not. It's all or nothing with this level of software.

In the UK, the upgrade is only £11 cheaper than the full product!
Doesn't seem to be an upgrade in the US? but then with the rebate, the cost for a full product is almost the same in GBP as Dollars, no suprise eh?

It's about time Adobe releases their software on Mac the same time as Windows. Adobe treats the Mac community like their doing us a favor.

Great. :D At least they are now trying to make the upgrades at the same time for both Windows and Mac users. Maybe Adobe saw how nice a image editor program like Pixelmator can be.

They also skipped version 5 for Mac Users. Also AFAIK, Adobe has never had upgrade price for Photoshop Elements.

Apple has changed from PPC to Intel and from Carbon to Cocoa in the last few years. You might have noticed this. Some Mac developers have had to change development tools as well as APIs.

There seems to be an upgrade version in the European online stores of Adobe, although price-wise there's no advantage over the mail-in-rebate in the US.
Just the process is less painful.

$99 is a bit steep. $79 is ok. but considering how often I use the software and what I mostly do Pixelmator for $49 is a much better deal for me.

I've been happily using Photoshop Elements 3 for quite some time now; I wonder if there is anything in this new version that would actually improve it for me? All the announced features in that article don't sound that vital.

The rebate is good until 10/31/10. The story makes it sound like you must buy it in the next 1.5 months, but you actually have 13.5 months.
You might want to update the story...

On Photoshop Elements upgrades: odd, I got upgrade pricing (direct from Adobe's online store, US) on PSE 6 (verified this looking at my receipt ... it doesn't say 'upgrade', but the price is $20 less than the retail price for the full version). So, I think the "they never have offered upgrades for PSE" line is wrong.
On PSE in general: I was rather let down with PSE 6. It was buggy, recourse-intensive, and more severely crippled than previous Elements versions had been. I'm not sure I'll be moving on up to 8. I think the cheaper alternatives might get my dollars instead this go-around.

There has been upgrade pricing previously. I grabbed version 6 for $79 upgrade price.
The people who don't offer upgrade pricing is usually Apple.

umm no. You may have gotten a discounted price, as Adobe typically does, because you owned a previous version (either on sale or mail in rebate). There was NEVER an UPGRADE disc and a seperate a FULL disc available for sale. It was only one disc no matter if you owned a previous version before or not.

I am planning on grabbing Photoshop CS4 or whatever it is called in about a month or so. I am not a pro or anything. Would I be ok with this new elements?
I have always heard about how Adobe doesn't do much in the consumer world with the Photoshop Elements.

You mentioned upgrade pricing in your post. Getting it for a discount because you have a previous version is upgrade pricing. Upgrade disk or not.

Why doesn't Apple just include all this stuff in iPhoto? I mean, raise the price of the iLife suite to $99 and include all the stuff Pixelmator and Elements can do!
I get tired of having to buy 3rd party software when Apple should offer things like this.
You either get iPhoto, which is so basic, powerful YES, but basic OR Aperture which you need a telephone book sized manual to learn the thing.
I just have to shake my head.

I had some Photoshop (not Elements) training years back. After that I've used it to edit photos (after Lightroom), create basic web graphics and presentations.
I don't currently have Photoshop at home. I was wondering if I would be happy with just Elements. What are the biggest differences? I don't think I need most of the advanced functions, but I want to do things myself and not be forced to use automated functions that don't do exactly what I want. Also one of the most important things is that the working logic is the same as in the main Photoshop.
I don't know if there is too little info on my needs to give an specific answer but anything is appreciated! (it's currently a bit hard for me to test these myself)

I just got it as part of the Wacom Bamboo Pen & Touch that I got. I haven't even installed it yet. The Wacom tablet is a brand new product that is priced at only $99, so before the Adobe announcement, it seemed like a steal to get Elements 6 also. Now I know why!

Multi-core Intel only (http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshopelmac/systemreqs/). If you've still got a PPC system, or an early generation Intel Mac with a single-core processor, you're SOL. Thanks Adobe for being more annoying than all other Mac software developers put together.
I've been happily using Photoshop Elements 3 for quite some time now; I wonder if there is anything in this new version that would actually improve it for me? All the announced features in that article don't sound that vital.
I've been using 3 for quite some time. Never saw a need to upgrade to 4. And thanks to their system requirements, can't upgrade to 8 even if I wanted to.
I don't currently have Photoshop at home. I was wondering if I would be happy with just Elements. What are the biggest differences?
The biggest difference is that Elements has no support for extensions (e.g. additional filters) and no scripting support. It does, however, support image-import plugins (I use SilverFast Ai from within Elements 3 with no problem.)
For my purposes (mostly making minor edits to images from my camera and scanner), it's quite sufficient. Your requirements may be very different from mine, however.

I tried it and it does not integrate in the sense of you click "open file" and choose the iPhoto library. It just drops an error message. Maybe there is a way and I could not find it.
Me? I will stick with Pixelmator.
