What's the fastest you've ever driven?
I was so excited about installing a performance chip into my car so I decided to go and test it out. Supposedly I got a 40 hp gain, but I haven't gotten a chance to dyno it out yet. But, on the straightaways I got it up to 195 mph, before I ran out of road. Wow. Can't wait to find out how fast it'll go on race gas!

in my datsun 610 i would say half that speed ;)

in my nissan maxima sw, when i was older and more mature, about 80 mph

and now in my volvo dl sw, i would say only 70 mph

...can you see a trend here?

i like speed but not with my cars and me in the driver's seat and cops on the road ready to ticket me...but i have gone over 500 mph a few times but that's when i am on a transcontinental flight as a passenger...i always wanted to know what it was like to go supersonic on a concorde

on land i think i have been somewhere around 200 mph on a bullet train in japan and that was amazing...and in the 70s...but i know now there are trains that go even faster these days

I've pushed maybe 110MPH in a '97 Toyota Avalon--one helluva clunky car (compared to the smaller and more agile '02 Civic in the garage)

'course, nowadays, I hardly push even 70 unless I'm even on a 65MPH highway...I guess i got tamed after I got pulled for doing 85 in a 55.

Well, considering I'm only 15, and in the great state of Massachusetts, it is illegal for me to even sit behind the wheel of a car,

I have to say I've never driven a car.....

.....about 5am one sunday morning I hit 70 mph in a wal-mart parking lot. :D :D :D

My only vehicle. '93 GMC Suburban. I think at one point I was going about 100. I can't say for sure though because the speedometer stops at 85. :D

Guessing? I know I've gone 80. Don't know if I've gone over that. It is possible.

125 in my 1.8T Volkswagon Passat, I think I can get it up to 130 where the speed governor kills the engine, but I ran out of road, and I haven't had a chance to try again because I always have someone in the car with me that doesn't want to go fast.

Duff-man says...while driving around in germany with a friend of mine (actually, he was driving at the time) we had the rented alfa-romeo up to 200kph on the autobahn...oh yeah!

Fastest I've driven was in my friend's dad's Corvette C5. Got it up to 130 MPH on I-580 near Oakland. Would have gone faster, but there was quite a bit of traffic ;).

In my old Plymouth Acclaim V6, I drove around 120 MPH on occasion in southern California. Unfortunately, I was pulled over one of those times. While I was able to keep my licence, my insurance shot up to $4000 a year. Suffice it to say, I don't drive anymore :(.

Same situation as Duff-Man - a work colleague on a German autobahn took us up to 195 km/h in his BMW (at night, which was a bit disconcerting at first :D).

I've also travelled at 100 km/h in a taxi through a 40 km/h zone in Lisbon .

Thought I'd add the conversion factors in too:

100 kph = 62 mph
100 mph = 160 kph

130 mph in a 1980 turbo Ford Mustang on a very flat I-70, 75 mph jumping some hills.

105 regularly in a 1999 VW Golf GLS with the standard 2.0 litre engine.

i used to read in car magazines about the fastest mass produced cars vs. the fastest custom cars

i think the nissan nsx goes 165 mph stock in the usa, and in europe, with after market parts, it goes 185 mph

for non mass produced cars, i heard the jaguar xj220 can top 200 mph and the porsche 959 can get close to that

of course that was back in the early 90s when i used to read that type of stuff...i wonder if there is a fairly common mass produced car off the assembly line that can do 200 mph these days?

...and i am sure there are custom cars, heavily modified that can near 250 mph but i wonder what they are

maybe he was in a porsche 959 or a jaguar xj-220...they go in the neighborhood of that speed

i saw a ferrari f40 once at the dealership...that car looked like it could go faster than 160-ish ;)

I've hit the factory top speed on both my VWs:

123 in the '94 Jetta across a mile-long bridge in the middle of nowhere.

115 a few times in my TDI on regular highways. While getting about 40mpg, no doubt.

The Jetta, while only hitting 8 mph more, was about 400 lbs lighter. It was quite a bit more eventful feeling than hitting 115 in the stodgy fatass Golf.

Like they say: "better to go fast in a slow car than slow in a fast car."

BTW, the only way you're adding 40hp to a car with nothing more than a chip is if you're boosting the turbo. If it doesn't have a turbo, there's no way you're getting those kinds of gains.

there are a couple very recent 'production cars' that can break 200mph...
ferrari enzo of course (i think i've heard 218), porsche carrera gt (212 sounds familiar), mercedes slr (maybe 207?)... what i really like though is the ford GT, as it is several hundred thousand dollars cheaper than any of those ones ($140K vs $400K-$600K)... they just finished high speed in italy, ford is downplaying it to 205mph for whatever reason, while i've read several articles saying they had the car up to 212mph several times.
http://www.topgear.com/servlet/tg?DEST=/content/jsp/individualRoadTest.jsp&EVENT=1010&MAKE=Ford:B4&MODEL=GT:XX&roadTestNumber=02.html
that car is very impressive, too bad the demand will be so high that dealers will be able to charge a lot more than MRSP, but i guess that happens with any exotic car.

I'm also very curious to know what the thread starter is driving at 195mph.

Since I live in Germany most of the time the fastest I have ever driven was 170mph in a Mercedes SL AMG 550. At this speed driving is sorta uncomfortable because you have to monitor everything so closely. I'd say when I do regular driving I drive around 110mph this is the highest speed I can go with actually arriving calm. :D

In a car, about 140 mph (224 Kph). Merkur XR4ti. Rock solid, but no more umph left.

In a car that bounced into the air (by accident over some train tracks), about 120 mph (192 Kph). Damn near killed me and my best friends on the way to school. Folks car.

In an AH-1S, at night, under NVGs, about 150 mph (240 Kph). Yes, in case you are wondering, sparks flew as there are no wheels, only skids. Good training!

Fastest stoped by a policeman and let off: 95 mph (152 Kph) in a 40 mph (64 Kph) Zone. Had a good reason! :D

Working in Germany means that I can regularly drive at 240-250 Km/h (that's 149-155 MPH). The problem is that (like everywhere) traffic's getting worse and it's getting harder and harder to find empty stretches of road where I can bounce off the rev limiter in top gear...:)

At that speed, I swear that you can see the fuel gauge moving south! I drive a BMW 330, so it's electronically limited to 250Km/h. Yeah, I know that I can have the speed governor removed, but since it'll invalidate my BMW warranty I'm too chicken!

The *really* scary thing is when I get overtaken at that speed - and it happens more often than you'd think.

I'm in a pretty heavily modified 01 Porsche 996 Turbo. Guess I should've mentioned that in my earlier post :D The speed/engine limiter has been removed, although it took a while to get up to that speed. And I still had at least another 1500 rpms to go before the engine blows. Not sure though; at about 150 everything's rattling and shaking like crazy; the digits on the speedo start to blur, and plus I'm so focused on keeping the car straight I can barely glance down!

My friend has almost the same car, but he's a little crazier than me. Apparently 495 hp was not enough for him, so he went out and got a kit to bump things up to 700 hp. He hasn't gotten it back from the tuning shop yet though, but the techs all say it should easily hit 250 (assuming the tires don't disintegrate first) mph. Yep, he's a speed freak.

I've sat in a friend's 04 SL55 AMG and although we didn't get up to 150 I was pretty impressed. It was so quiet in the car; very well built. The turbo, on the other hand, is not so serene. As everyone knows, the interiors aren't so good looking (very cheap signal stalks!!), and the road noise at speed is pretty loud.

Ummm...isn't a AH-1 an attack helicopter or something?!

I rode shotgun with my friend going downhill into Park City (from Heber) and he topped at about 135 mph in his VW Golf. The stupid part is that it was winter and at night and who knows what ice or deer was lurking out there in the darkness.

But I'm much more of a wimp and I don't think I've been much over 105 behind the wheel.

I do remember, as a kid, we were traveling in Germany and my dad thought he was going really fast yet many other cars zipped right by him. In fact, it was on that trip, on the Autobahn, as a 10-year-old that I was told for the first time to "take the wheel for a sec" while my dad changed his shoes. I like to think that my first driving experience, ever, was on the Autobahn. :D

195 MPH - wow....

I probably have pushed 130 -140mph (on the speedo anyway) in my youth. I seem to have lost my bottle in my old age (thank god) I rarely go over 100 now.

The fastest car i have driven is a recent Porsche 911 Carrera 4 which my Dad borrowed. - I only gave it a standing start to about 70 mph - seems faster than an old 911 turbo which I drove - I love the paddle gear change.

The fastest accelerating vehicle I have driven is my old 100cc Kart - 0-60 in about 3 seconds. If you want to experience near F1 handling - get a kart ;)

I used to have a '75 nova custom (with a 350 of course) and I had it over 110 mph a few times. Sure that's nothing compared to the speeds that most modern cars will go, but it sure felt fast. The front end always felt a little light like the car was getting ready to take off. Not exactly a high speed car. I miss that car. Sold it when I went to university, but now that I am nearly done, I wish I had it back to do some restoration work. Not quite as nice a body as the '71, but still worth fixing up IMO.

Edit: at the moment I am doing about 700 mph heading east (from the comfort of my office chair)

Within the past year, around 210kph (130mph) on the Autobahn. Had plenty of oomph left (A6 Avant TDI...really nice), but I felt the car "lighten up" significantly at around 190kph. Backed it down to ~160kph for the next hour before hitting congestion.

Within the USA, I keep my excursions under 100mph. Its simply nowhere near as safe over here.

During youthful days of indiscretion, probably the most outrageous one was 45mph...on a 3 speed Schwinn bicycle. Yes, it was a very steep hill.

the fastest i've ever been "legally clocked" was 147 in my old porsche 911S...i could tell you how i got out of the ticket but that would just promote insane road behavior...

of course, doing 56mph on a mountain bike was far scarier...and knowing that i threw my chain somewhere around 45 and there was a large chance that my rear wheel would get locked-up and send me airborn to a gravelly death made it quite the thrill.

The fastest I have gone was 195 km/hr. I was riding my 91 Honda CBR 1000 on a road outside Townsville, Australia. Talk about a stupid and crazy thing to do. Going 100 kph on a bike is scary enough. Now that I live on a small island with no open road, tons of traffic, lots of cops, and a 500 cc bike, no more speeding. That and I don't think my wife would like the cops telling her that her husband has been transformed into a wet spot on the pavement.

195MPH??? Now that sounds a little like a HUGE exageration. Tell me how many RMP were you doing @ that speed?

On a similar note I once travelled @139MPH unaided by any mechanical device.

Okay, maybe I wasn't clear in my earlier post. I'm in a heavily modded 996 Turbo. I've swapped out my tranny, for Techart's. I'm at a "stage one" performance upgrade on the car, meaning the intake, exhaust turbos, and chip has been swapped out. The engine itself has reworked cams and pistons. Technically speaking, the stock car redlines (rev-limited) at about 7100 rpms. But with the swap and upgrades I've pushed the cut-off to about 8200. Actually, it's prolly higher than that, but I've been too scared to push it beyond that for fear of blowing something up. I don't think i can afford a whole new engine at this point! We also had the speed GPS verified, since porsche's speedos are known to be off a bit at higher speeds.

If I remember correctly though, I think the rpms were sitting around 6900, more a little less; not sure. The 6th gear is really long, and the stock turbos don't take enough advantage of it. Plus, with the lowered suspension and some reworked front and rear aerodynamics bits there is less wind resistance (drag). So, no, I don't have my units mixed up, nor am I exxagerating :D

Now, how the heck did you go that fast without any mechanical aid?! Were you jumping out of an airplane or something?!

120 in my '00 VW jetta (i have the GPS data to back that up. . . well i dont have it if the court asks!) . . . thats when the govoner kicked in. . . i still had about 1000RPM before red-line but it wouldnt let me go there :-( ive had my mom's bmw up to 120 also (though it felt like it was going 60. . . man those things ride nice!) but i ran out of road (too many curves) so i stopped at 120, im sure it could do more till the govoner kicks in. but the BEST was 190 in my friend's dad's new corvette !!! wait no that was a dream, i only got to 60 in the corvette before my friend started yelling at me! ive got to get a crovette of my own . . . work on the engine a bit and then see how fast i can go :-)

these fifty cars can all do better than 195 mph

Check out #3, the Vector WX3 concept: My friend from high school's dad built the heads and jigs for that car. (maybe more than that, I cant remember) I've seen pictures of him (my friend) standing by it back in the early 90's. Unbelievable cars.

I did 150 something in a Triumph TR-7 with supercharger.

It scared the hell out of me... i tought i'd start flying with the car.

It was a convertible and the roof was closed. But the air almost ripped it off!

I burned rubber until around 75mph.

Sold it because insurance was getting outrageous.

125mph in my protege5 in a tunnel, which made it seem faster, but the car was damn solid.

110mph on jersey backroads in a Cooper S (dont tell my dad ;) some guy in a Jetta Vr6 (older one) wanted to run and 110 was all i was willing to give him.

50+ on my Canondale mountain bike off road a bunch of times, i love doing that.

Good guess.

Sounds like a lot more than "stage 1"

Stages tend to go a little like this:

Stage I Performance exhaust system
Stage II High flow intake
Stage III ECU upgrade & boost jets
Stage IV Larger intercooler
Stage V EVC
Stage VI bigger injectors & turbo upgrade
Stage VII Bigger high flow intake
Stage VIII Bigger type turbo upgrade
Stage IX NOS

I'm a bit skeptical of the people clamining to go 50+ on mountain bikes. I've always found that people think they're going MUCH faster on bikes than they really are. 50 mph on a bike (on dirt first) is basically professional downhill racing. If you hit ANYTHING (and I seriously mean anything at all) you're toast.

If you're on a road, chances are those tyres of yours just won't keep up (again super tall mountain).

Hell, even the guys in tour de france, on the time trial speed bikes don't hit 50mph and that's with ideal conditions.

Now that I've said this, I know it's possible, on one of the gigantic dune hills of northern michigan my cousin hit roughly 50+ (give or take for bike computer discrepenticies) on a road (with a road bike). So it is possible, but some of these make me question the validity of the claims.

BTW, 145mph in my saab 9000 CDE in the masspike tunnel going under the prudential building in boston. With the lights of the tunnel, it seemed like I was in a tron movie.

One night, in a fit of boredom and stupidity, I decided to test out the top speed of my 1987 Audi 5000 (RIP). I hit 118mph that night - not bad, but apparently other owners have gotten 130+ out of it.

And I saw that the discussion turned towards bikes...I commute to and from the Metro station on my bike every day. Fastest I've gone on my mountain bike fitted with road tires ('97 Schwinn Frontier) is 35.6 mph. Granted, that was downhill, and my bike computer may not be completely accurate, but it's respectable for a mountain bike. I hope to borrow a road bike and see how fast I go down that stretch - I don't think it would be unreasonable to say that 40mph+ is within reach there, with the proper equipment.

Well, on fire roads or smooth trails its quite easy. The bike gets stable as the wheels spin faster, and most mountain bikes have at least front suspension to soak up most minor obstacles. I hit 50 in several races and a few trails/roads in colorado. If DH race tires hold up going that fast, mine will too. Granted, my speedo is not perfectly accurate, but I calibrate it the right way and it has claimed I hit 56.

You are right, it is easy to crash though. In crested butte I hit a water bar that was hidden in a shadow from a tree and it knocked my right hand off the handle bars going about 40. Despite my right shoulder being where my hand should be, I slowed as fast I could before slamming into the side of the mountain. Just bruises, scratches, and a little blood.

I'm pretty sure the guys in the tour hit well over 50 on the downhill portions of the mountain stages. If they are constantly doing 30 on the flats, they can handle 60.

...and I do have to agree that driving fast in tunnels is an amazing experience, feels like a video game. hehe.

all I will say is you havent truley brushed with death until you go 120mph in a 1991 Toyota Corolla....when it is 13 years old....

I've been closer to death in a 1988 Toyota Tercel Hatchback, 13 years old and 161,000 miles original engine and I got up to 107mph. I did 110 in my 99 Corolla but that is nowhere near as fun as hearing bolts rattle in a 88 tercel hatchback.

hmmm, do motorcycles count for this one?

if so, i hit 150 mph on a highway in maryland on my honda f4. was trying to keep up with some guys i was riding with. they were all on 750cc or liter bikes and left me behind! :p

nowadays, i reserve that type of speed for days on a race track. at one of the local tracks, i get up to maybe 115 on the straight (and i'm VERY slow compared to most others!). if i had more guts (and more confidence in my skills), i could safely get up to 140 on that straight before braking for turn 1.

is anyone accounting for speedometer error here? skimmed an article recently that indicated that the error can be up to 10% or so the higher the speed. maybe most of our top speeds aren't really that fast (mine included) if that's taken into consideration. i know there are ways to correct your speedometer, but i haven't bothered doing that on any of my vehicles.

i think there was something superbike related in monterey (where i live) last weeked but i am not sure...there is always this bike thing or that bike thing whether it's superbikes or the harleys at hollister or san juan bautista

i have never owned a bike but have always been torn between superbikes and classic harley type bikes...and now that there are custom bikes being shown built on tv, one of those looks cool, too...but i am sure those are very expensive ;)

i often see superbikes out in carmel valley, ca on weekends or groups of yuppie harley riders sometimes in their own groups, but sometimes all together in one large lump disrupting the countryside...since they are often hometown folk, i know that behind those fierce engines are usually librarians, accountants, nurses, and basic indoor white collar people mad at their bosses ;)

i usually stay out of san juan bautista since the 1%ers like the weekends there, but i have seen the tophatters and the iron souls and they had some really great looking bikes all parked right next to each other...which reminds of that fantastic scene where pee wee herman (pee wee's great adventure) knocks over a whole bunch of outlaw bikes and then is made to dance on the bar table for payback, where the bikers are so impressed that they give pee wee his own bike that he handily trashes within seconds ;)

120mph driving a stock 1999 Honda Prelude on I-20 before a Semi pulled in front of me. I guess I owe the guy big, concidering that the next thing I saw was a cop with a radar gun sitting in the median. The car was so smooth that my passenger was asleep when all this was going on.

Yeah, you're right. Those stages are loose clasifications though. I just pick and choose whatever I can afford and put it in. I don't really follow any tuning programmes except Techart's "suggested" one ;).

Now I'm trying to figure out how to get my 996 on a diet, because I'm pretty satisfied with the power. I want to lighten up the whole car, but it seems like it's even more expensive to do that than buy more power!

So, are you a paratrooper or something?

On a good mountain bike (but with no suspension), I maxed out at 45 mph (72 kph) on a paved downhill slope of only about 100 yards (80m). And yes, if I had hit anything at all I was in a suburb and who knows out of which road or driveway a car could have come out I would have been toast. I had a speedometer on my bike, so I'm fairly certain of the speed.

195 mph? I surely hope this wasn't on a public road, but on a racetrack.
If this was on a public road, it was incredibly idiotic, as well as irresponsible.
Not exactly the stuff you should be writing a brag post about.

I'm not sure what souping up already fuel-inefficient and polluting crotch rockets is supposed to achieve in a country where the speed limit is 65 on most freeways. Addressing low self esteem seems like a pretty good guess.

At first I thought this was MPH, but now I know its KPH. I've done about 100MPH in my 325i.

yeah, anything over 120 and you really can't react fast enough without proper training. by the time you see something... it's behind you already!

definitely many and all types of riders out here in sunny california. i have always liked sportbikes myself, but like the harley cruiser types as well (though i don't see myself owning one any time soon). the custom cruisers they do nowadays can be really cool - from a performance perspective, they usually don't handle well at all but that's usually not why people buy them anyway!

the motorcycle event in the monterey last weekend was the honda superbike classic, where they hold a couple of the world superbike races (the only world superbike events in the u.s. in the racing season). it's huge for motorcycle enthusiasts, though i think the majority of attendees are sportbike riders as opposed to harley/cruiser riders. it is funny nowadays how it seems most harley/cruiser riders are doctors, lawyers, etc. trying to do something different and fun, as opposed to the regular "hell's angel" stereotype. sportbikes tend to attract a lot of younger guys with a need for speed who either grow up and stick with sportbikes or move on to harleys/cruisers for the comfort and more practical aspects (long-distance traveling, the ability to more easily carry a passenger). and, of course, there are a few girls too who ride sportbikes! and there are more and more everyday. :) enjoying speed (safely and responsibly, of course - preferably on a race-track) is not gender-specific. ;)

i had a friend in high school, quiet emo-poet type who was extremely calm and introspective...nothing bugged him

With all this talk of driving fast, lets just say I get a ticket, what will happen at these speeds, all in a 55MPH Zone.

65 : You may get pulled over, or May not
75 : My average speed with friends on a normally copless road
85 : My speed by myself on some copless roads
100: Light fun speeding
120+: Seeing how fast my car can go

After hearing replays I may change those descriptions :p. Also, I am 17 with no record.
