As previously scheduled (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/09/23/atandt-announces-iphone-mms-launch-for-late-morning-pacific-time-friday/), AT&T has activated MMS for iPhone 3G and 3GS users in the United States, bringing to an end months of speculation and waiting since software support for the feature was introduced in iPhone OS 3.0 (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/06/08/iphone-os-3-0-launching-june-17th/) in mid-June.

Apple has posted a support article (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3880) outlining the process for activating MMS, which involves updating a carrier settings file on users' iPhones via iTunes. Users are prompted to connect their iPhone to iTunes and click the "Check for Update" button. Users should update to iPhone OS 3.1 if they have not already done so, and then click the "Update Settings" button on the pop-up window notifying them that a new carrier settings file is available.

http://images.macrumors.com/article/2009/09/25/130957-update_settings.png

After installation of the new carrier settings file, users must restart their devices. Apple recommends that users verify that the functionality is active by creating a new text message. A camera icon should be available.

Easy, I would much rather have my jailbroken phone with Backgrounder, Intelliscreen, MyFi, 3G Unrestrictor, etc and more than to be able to trim video or press a button on my bluetooth to call someone. 3.1 wasn't worth it.

I'm really getting tired of these forums because all anyone does is complain...
Complaining that AT&T didnt support MMS on 3.0 is understandable, but complaining because it wasn't up when you woke up this morning... Get a life!

And now tethering seems to be the new complaint... Why didnt people complain like this over blackberrys?? My brother has a blackberry less than 2 years old: no Wi-Fi, no mms, no tethering...

Ok, so I guess I have to decide if I want to keep my exchange account for work, or be able to use MMS.
(3.1 is required for MMS. 3.1 on the IPhone 3G breaks exchange active sync.)

Thanks for putting me in that situation Apple!

With a little digging you can make it work on 3.0. I didn't upgrade so I could keep tethering (and before any of you say anything, **** off. they don't offer it as a service yet), and using the help.benm.at site was able to load the MMS profile just fine and still keep 3.0 and tethering.

That's funny... that never worked for me. If a friend ever sent me a MMS, it was always silently discarded.... never prompted for a photo website to login to check it.

Obviously the addition of MMS is great... sending it via email? Not all phones support email. Also it was annoying every time you wanted to send a picture to someone to have to do THEIRNUMBER@vzwpix.com, etc. MMS was long needed on the iPhone... its here now... use it and abuse it :)

But seriously, now people will start complaining about tethering...

I've sent 2 pictures, they each took like 5 minutes to send. They haven't received them yet, and now I'm trying to send another one and it will not send after waiting 5 minutes.

Don't worry its happening to everyone right now. The MMS servers are getting jam with people testing then. I think after this weekend the network should get better In the mean time txting pictures will take a little bit to send out.

(3.1 is required for MMS. 3.1 on the IPhone 3G breaks exchange active sync.)

Thanks for putting me in that situation Apple!

It only breaks Exchange Active Sync if hardware encryption is turned on on the server side. Oh, and it doesn't break it, it actually fixes it by enforcing the encryption. Not sure why the old 3G phones don't support that level of hardware encryption though.

Mobile ad firm AdMob today released a bit of data that provides an interesting glimpse into operating system versions being used on the iPhone and iPod touch. According to a survey of ad requests received during the week of September 15th-22nd, just after Apple's release of iPhone OS 3.1, 23% of aggregate users of the iPhone OS had already updated to iPhone OS 3.1. An additional 51% of users were running iPhone OS 3.0, with the remainder running earlier versions of iPhone OS.

Do the phone companies make the usual 40 cents off of an MMS? 20 cents from the sender and 20 from the receiver?*

Or does this cost more than SMS?

I've been so spoiled by free email that I have no idea what people pay for MMS! I'd love to use one thing occasionally though: sending the current GPS location when separated from friends in a large area. IIRC, that's something we can now do.

* Make that 21 cents per party per message (with tax), and 3 messages total minimum: initial message, acknowledgement, and "ok c u later." So $1.26 from sharing one photo. Hope the telcos can stay in business on such slim margins :)

They fixed what was broken and now it functions as it should. Protecting sensitive corporate email is imperative and using the 3G doesn't provide the device encryption necessary to uphold Exchange encryption standards. Talk to your company about this and see how they feel about it.

Guess that was my fault.

Just sayin'.

Sep 25, 2009, 02:11 PM
To clear a few things up for everyone. 3.1 does not break active sync in any way. The update fixed the way the iPhone was falsely reporting back to the Exchange server as being encrypted. If your company inforces encryption for Exchange and you are on a 3g device, you will no longer get email with 3.1 update. If you are on a 3G(S) device, you will be fine either way, becuase it supports encryption. Do not update if you are on a 3GS that is jailbroken, you will loose the jailbreak.

If you do not want to update, but still want MMS, you can get the carrier file which a few users have posted downloads for, and install it. To do this, download th ipcc file, plug in your iPhone to iTunes, go to the iPhone and hold Option key (SHIFT on a PC) and click "Update". You should now be able to browse to where you downloaded the carrier file. Reboot your phone, and you are all set. Hope this helps some of you.

So can I get my email or not?

Nope, can't get it with 3.1

I guess it's broken.

If you installed 3.1 over a phone that had previously been hacked with a manually installed carrier settings file to enable tethering or MMS (like BenQ or whatever it's called), then it's probably not E-mail that's not working, it's your 3G data that's not working! A LOT of people had significant iPhone problems after installing firmware 3.1 over a version 3.0 with a previous hack. The only way I could fix mine and cure ALL of its ills was to do a complete restore as a new iPhone and manually install all of my stuff and manually reset all of my settings. (A restore from backup did NOT fix the problems.)

It was a giant pain in the ass. BUT... the good news... after doing the restore as a new iPhone, my iPhone 3GS is functioning perfectly. No problems with 3G data, not battery issues, no crashing, no shutting off all by itself and no delays or hangs between apps and screens, etc.

I learned my lesson, I will never hack the phone again. The tiny bit I used tethering was NOT worth the hassle of doing a restore as new phone!

flash is a horrible, resource-sucking, battery-draining, soon-to-be-dead standard that we'd all be better off without. Moreover, find me a single smartphone that does it even passably well.

Also, don't know if it's coincidence or not, but my 3G speeds have gone straight to hell today. Count me among those who'd rather have decent data speeds than MMS.

How do I install it??? Please???

1. First, you need to download the updated AT&T carrier file… The AT&T 5.5 carrier file can be downloaded HERE (http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/29849/ATT_US.ipcc).
* EDIT* you will need to change the .zip extension to .ipcc

2. Then, you’ll need to tweak iTunes slightly so that it will let you update the carrier file manually. Here is how you do that:

For Mac – Open up Terminal, and at the prompt type defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE and hit Enter.

For Windows (32-bit) – Go to Start > Run and type in command, then hit Enter. Then, at the prompt, type “C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe” /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1 and hit Enter.

For Windows (64-bit) – Go to Start > Run and type in command, then hit Enter. Then, at the prompt, type “C:\Program Files(x86)\iTunes\iTunes.exe” /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1 and hit Enter.

3. Then, plug your iPhone into your computer and fire up iTunes. Once it’s all loaded, go to your iPhone in iTunes and hold down SHIFT (or OPTION on the Mac) while clicking on the Update button in the main iPhone panel (not the sidebar). This brings up a dialog box that allows you to choose a file for updating. Go to where you saved the AT&T carrier .ipcc file and open it up. You will need to choose the .ipcc file type from the files of type drop-down menu in the dialog box in order to find it. This takes just a moment to update.

4. REBOOT YOUR IPHONE!

They fixed what was broken and now it functions as it should. Protecting sensitive corporate email is imperative and using the 3G doesn't provide the device encryption necessary to uphold Exchange encryption standards. Talk to your company about this and see how they feel about it.

I'm on a 3GS, jailbroken, with 3.0 installed and updated the carrier settings to 5.5 via the link posted here... everything is working great!

Prior to this, I had the 5.1 carrier settings installed and working as of yesterday.

(Oh, and my tethering still works too)

Can somebody PLEASE show me how to install the new carrier file, that somebody posted on here, on my 3GS??? It's non-jailbroken and it's on 3.0, I don't want to install to 3.1 yet...

How do I install it??? Please???

i had to search online since it was my first time too..

simply go download the .ipcc that Diddy posted.. then remember where it saved.

TO be extra careful this is what i did after reading over a post on a different forum.

quit itunes.

go to terminal and type in: defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE

then hit enter...

open itunes... then select your iphone on the left. over on the summary tab, hold down "option" while clicking the update button next to iphone firmware. NOTE: ive done this on a mac using the latest itunes, an im not sure what button you hold down on windows to do the equivalent. probably alt, but im not sure. This gives you the ability to choose a custom install file from a location other than where iTunes is programmed to read from

select the .ipcc file you just downloaded... then click Ok.

give it 5 seconds. them boom. youre done.

reboot the iphone. and send an MMS.

As someone on 3.0 with the benm.at tethering enabled I can say that .. rightclicking this link posted above and selecting "download linked file" .. then subsequently option-clicking in iTunes (9.xx) and selecting the downloaded .ipcc file will result in the carrier settings be upgraded and any jailbreaks/hacks not being affected.. then everyone enjoys a great friday, no?!?

My 3Gs isnt jailbroken, but I wasn't willing to go to 3.1 and lose my tethering just for some MMS. but now i can have my cake and eat it too. kinda.

I can say that after downloading the .ipcc. installing it. rebooting. i have MMS and benm.at still works.

thanks guy/gal who posted this carrier file

Are you SURE?!?! When many of us installed 3.1 we were certain tethering was still working too, because there was the tethering option in network settings. BUT... the minute we actually TRIED to connect to a computer and USE tethering, the tethering option disappeared from the network settings and hasn't returned (not even with this new 5.5 carrier settings update).

Just because you have the tethering option shown, and you can turn it on and off, doesn't mean it will actually work!

So, when I go to 3.1, I cant get my email anymore?

In that case, yeah, it's broken.

Rephrase it anyway you like, they dropped the ball on that one big time.

It couldn't have anything to do with your IT group could it? Or the settings you have on the exchange server could it?

1. First, you need to download the updated AT&T carrier file… The AT&T 5.5 carrier file can be downloaded HERE (http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/29849/ATT_US.ipcc).

If you are on a Mac, connect your phone to iTunes. Hold option+click and select the 5.5 IPCC file. It should update your phone. You might have to type something into TERMINAL beforehand. Here's the command:

For Mac OS X:

Close iTunes if it is open
Start Terminal (Applications > Utilities)
Run the following command: defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE

So, I guess I get to either have MMS and no work email, or work email and no MMS.

Am I missing something??? I have 3.1 and have since it was released with Active Sync working fine. Just added the MMS update and everything still works.

why the restart? i thought using a UNIX OS meant that you never have to restart?

Because on a UNIX os, you have deamons which have to restart, and it seems this update does not restart the deamon itself, so you have to reboot your phone to restart the deamon

When I was running firmware 3.0, the above sequence (modify iTunes with Terminal command, and then option+click to install an .ipcc file) was EXACTLY what I did to enable tethering. And that "hack" was the ONLY hack I had ever done to my iPhone. And when I installed firmware 3.1 over that hack, I had a LOT of problems with my iPhone. Problems that an AT&T level 2 tech IMMEDIATELY identified by asking flat out if I had installed a carrier settings hack.

I'm not suggesting that nobody do the above. I'm only saying that I will never manually do an update like that again. The hassle of fixing my iPhone (restore as a new iPhone) was just too big!

Not true.
3.1 breaks MS Exchange Active sync (on stock, non-jailbroken phones) leaving MANY enterprise users without their work email in the mail app.

It doesn't really break it right? It just starts being honest about what security it uses. So if your IT guys don't mind having a 3G connecting they should lower the security setting.

You realize you'll never be able to upgrade your iphone again, right?

Thanks! Seems to work on my jailbroken 3.0.1

The link should download as an ipcc file not zip. If using Safari you may need to go to Safari, Preferences and uncheck "open safe files..." Otherwise use firefox.

Upgrade instructions/ MAC:

MAC OS X:

1. Close iTunes.
2. Open Terminal (Applications > Utilities > Terminal).
3. Run the command: defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE

4. Open iTunes & plug in your phone.
5. Click on your phone in iTunes(under device settings).
6. MAC OS X: hold alt and click “Check for updates." Point to the file location where you saved the download.
7. Reboot phone
8. Go to Settings, General, About. Scroll down to "Carrier" It should now read AT&T 5.5

What...and go thru all of these growth pains again?...this time with Verizon? I hate to say this, but by the time that Verizon gets the iPhone (won't be until Verizon has a full nationwide 4G nework), AT&T's network will be in a much better shape to support the iPhone's unique bandwidth requirements than Verizon will be on THEIR Day 1.

If you want to upgrade your carrier file without running 3.1 just do this:

1. download the ipcc file from the post earlier in the thread

2. If on a Mac type this in terminal while iTunes is closed:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE

3. Open iTunes and attach your phone.

4. Decline the upgrade to 3.1 prompt.

5. "Option" click the Update button and select the ipcc file that you previously downloaded.

6. It will only take a second to apply the file. Once it's complete disconnect your iPhone and reboot your phone.

7. enjoy!

I just tested this process on my phone and it worked flawlessly.
