Getting files off-network

I am about to leave for the weekend and I am bringing my laptop.

I want to know how I can get some files off my home computer and get them onto my laptop without needing to be on the same network.
 
1. Turn on file sharing on the home computer, if you haven't already.

2. On your router, forward port 548 for AFP, 445 (i think) for SMB to your home machine's IP. Or if you have multiple machines, use a specific public port, say 549, and forward that to 548 internally to your home machines IP.

3. Get your external IP (internet IP) from your router and jot that down.

3a. Or setup a Dyndns address (use the widget to update your IP) and use that to connect.

5. Test the setup before you actually leave. You can test it at home, just go Finder--> Go --> Connect to Server (or command + K in Finder).

For SMB
Code: 
smb://yourIP:yourPort

If you used a different public port, be sure to use that and not the private port.
 
Ok, there is something I don't understand.

Which IP address do I use? I did an internet IP lookup and it told my my IP was a 71.x.x.x number, and in the system preferences in the file sharing it said it's 192.169.x.x number.

Which one do I use?

Ohh no, you didn't offend me. I just don't like bloating my machine with tons of 3rd party stuff, especially since it's hard to get rid of once you are done with them.

Woops, I don't have a sig, I was thinking of a different forum.

Your internal IP doesn't mean anything on the Internet. You want the 71.x.x.x IP. That is the only IP you can see from the internet.

To be sure of your address, consult your router. Just to make sure it matches up with what you got from the website.
 
Great, I already arrived at my destination, and now I can't access it because I don't remember my external IP. 😡

I could try that ISP thing, though comcast always takes such a long time to just get an operator on. Even on simple things like 'how much does this simple service cost that you did not seem to post the cost in your commercial thereby forcing us to waste both of our times just for you to put me on hold for three hours for a question that will take between 10-20 seconds to ask and be answered.'
 
I'm interested in this, too, and I've got a couple questions:

1. How do I find the internet IP address?

2. How do I find out what port I need to use?

Ins't that one of the claims fanbois make is that Mac apps don't clog up the system like windows programs do?

Oh, and next time perhaps a USB thumb drive may be easier for you to use?
