Hi everyone i just want to say i've been typing "rome total war mac" into google scrolling down almost a whole page to be directed to this forum and have been checking it every few days for a month and a half now reading all your stuff and getting the info. i played the pc version for YEARS and got a mac a year ago for school and what not. so this is great. My copy should be at my house from ferral in a few days =] i made this account just to express and exercise online camaraderie and be gay.
thanks ferral:D

OK, I've fired it up and started a Scippi campaign. Everything looks great - the startup options are in a nice, mac-like options screen. The game itself runs fine.
Now off to Africa - for some reason those Carthaginians annoy me, I'll have to do something about that.
Also, the game can run in the background - I've got it minimized as I type this. That will be very convenient, particularly compared to the old Boot Camp method of running the PC version.

. . . and rightfully so. Long have the Scipii been denied our rightful place on the Roman stage. Defeating the Greeks was as child's play - descendants of Alexander? I don't think so - more like Alexander's playthings.
Now the Carthaginians beckon. I've built ports in Capua and Messana to get the tax revenue. I haven't built any army units these first few year, but now will slightly expand my army - but not too much! Keep an eye on those denarii.

Hello all,
I've also kept an eye on this thread for a while, and am glad the game is finally out. I played RTW a long time ago when it came out for PC and enjoyed it very much.
Now I own a cool new iMac (8 month old) and will gladly buy and play it again for hours I'm sure.
Got a question for the Ferral guys:
Do you have any idea when (if at all) will this fine addition to the growing Mac games be available for purchase in any of the big stores in the USA, for example BestBuy, Target, Walmart, etc...?
Or, will it only be available for purchase online, and from the Apple stores (which are scarce)..?
Thanks.
I do hope this thread survives and transforms into one where people post experiences or concerns about the game, and maybe even some screenshots.
I would also like to play multiplayer as soon as I remember my well-thought tactics and money-savvy tricks.
;)

Hey there PatrickCocoa, please don't insult the Macedonians (I am one) and Alexander III Macedonian, also known as The Great.
The Macedonians weren't, aren't and will never be Greek.
Philip II and his son Alexander who later became the Great crushed and CONQUERED the Greeks at the battle of Chaeronea in 338 B.C., before they turned their sight to the great Persian Empire.
Even in the game, as far as I remember, the Greek City-States are clearly marked differently (with a different symbol) from the Macedonians.

First off I'd like to sincerely thank the fine folks at Feral Interactive for reuniting me with one of the best strategy games ever made. The only regret I ever had about switching to Mac was the inability to play RTW anymore.
Second, Will there ever be a demo available for this title?
The Macedonians weren't, aren't and will never be Greek.
Finally, as a guy with several friends, who are citizens of formerly Yugoslav nations, never ever bring up the subject of of Macedon when there is a Greek, Serbian, Bulgarian or Albanian in the same room, it only leads too trouble.
That being said, why doesn't anyone ever get excited about the Thracians?:)

I didn't see any window option, but you can command-tab while the game is running and it will minimize to the dock. You can then do whatever non-RTW activities are necessary to maintain your presence in the real world, then get back to the game.
While in the dock, RTW only took up about 4% of the CPU (I measured it two or three times just to see).

All suggestions and comments in these forums are taken into account, obviously neither me or anyone else from Feral ever comments if we want to port a game or not (to try and stop any rumour mongering either way).
So by all means please let us know what games you think would be good on the Mac but also don't expect any answers apart from "thanks for the suggestion it's been noted".

I imagine most gamers will strongly support both those, even "Empire" as more users upgrade to Macs with improved graphics. After all, these are AAA titles (I imagine Napoleon will carry on the general level of quality) & it's not as if OS X has a glut of new games coming out.
As I've said before, it'll all depend on sales of "Rome". If we want more TW titles for Mac then we should buy "Rome", even if we've played it on PC. :)

Yes, soon. We want to make it a Universal application though, so it runs on both PPC and Intel Macs, hence the delay.
Would you decision makers at Feral ever consider doing of package of older games like Pharaoh and Caesar III?
Given the age of these games and similar setting to Rome (and the fact as Caesar III did get a Mac release, as brop52 pointed out), I think it'd be pretty unlikely. But if enough people ask we'll add it to the list of possibles!

This. Waiting for this to happen before I buy. I'm a graduate student, so I don't have a lot of spare time. If I'm going to use it on a game, I better know it's good first...
Of course, there's always the possibility that it will significantly delay graduation, like Starcraft threatened to do with my Bachelor's back in the day...

Hi - this is really directed at someone from feral- i sent them a mail but to no avail
what is the correct procedure to get a rtw mod working on the new mac version? I noticed the enable rome shell checkbox and advanced options dialogues on the startup screen...
i tried copying a mod dir into the root folder and entered "- mod:EB" into adv options string then ran rome.app
I noticed that something was different- my savegames from the vanilla version werent visible anymore- so i think im headed in the right direction...?

We we have seen a few rome emails coming in and they have all been answered so PM me if you don't get a reply soon as I suspect you might be using a wrong email (or a subject that gets spam filtered).
As for Mod's usually it is a data update (depending on the PC mod) so I would made a new data dmg with the modded data in the correct places.
I hope to try and see if we can get some installers for the popular ones but as mods are not an officially supported feature (as we cannot control or test the content) it is a lower priority than the PPC patch right now.

Don't worry it's the same for me basically means no one else is on Gameranger with a rome total war server, i'd suggest you host your own server and see if other people will join.

cool- can you expand on this?
is it possible to have a couple of mods running concurrently with vanilla rtw?
if it is then how do i activate a specific mod? do i use mod:switch in the advanced options?
or do i have to overwrite the data dir?
is there a list of the advanced options flags or commands?
any further instructions gratefully received :)
I hope to try and see if we can get some installers for the popular ones
failing manual install instructions that would be great- i lost a couple of years of lunchtimes to the EB mod...and now that i have a mac and a rtw that runs pretty fast on it ..im feeling the need....

Sorry I have way to much stuff going on to suggest anything right now, but as I said if you mess about with the data sets etc and see what happens. I have not run the mods in months but if you edit the files to match it all should come together.
The Mac game is the PC final patch so look about PC sites for clues, end of next week I might have a bit of spare time to write up something.

Thanks! It is definitely above and beyond, but that would be great. I was really wondering how I could get the realism mod to work, so far it has been an epic fail.
Also, I wanted to thanks you guys at Feral for the great work that this Mac version has turned out to be. Being a mac gamer is so frustrating sometimes due to the many lazy ports out there. Really, I'm I don't care that the release date kept getting pushed back because the game works right and is a quality product.
Especially, I'd like to thank Sylvie Alusse from the webstore, and Edwin for keeping me informed on the status of my order and quickly resolving the one shipping issue I had (due to my own error). Hey deadwulfe, best thing to do is to contact support (support AT feralinteractive DOT com) and let them know you've been having this problem, that way we can see if it's a bug in the game or a problem with your install. :)

I've just picked this game up at the Apple Store on Regent Street - looking forward to giving it a whirl, having never played a Total War game before! Actually it was this thread that made me think of looking for it - go MacRumors!
My quick question is - reading through the manual before I get home to my iMac tonight - the manual mentions ways to replicate the mouse wheel on an Apple mouse. Will I just be able to use the context-sensitive finger movements on my Magic Mouse? That would be great if possible!

I've used the Magic Mouse (Apple's latest mouse the new version with the touch sensitive top) when playing Rome: Total War and was not satisfied. I've switched back to my $10 Microsoft two button with scroll wheel.
Why? The Magic Mouse did everything it was supposed to, including scrolling. The problem was that occasionally it would misinterpret (or I would mis-click) a right-click as a left-click. On the Magic Mouse the mouse there is only one button, the mouse looks at where your fingers are when it's clicked to determine if it's a right-click or a left-click. If you leave your index finger down too much when right-clicking with your middle finger, the mouse decides you meant a left click instead of a right click. In RTW, disaster ensues (or at least you send one of your armies off to somewhere completely unexpected).
And yes, I gave the Magic Mouse enough time so that I could learn (or internalize) how to use it. I used Magic Mouse exclusively for about a month, for both RTW (via Boot Camp) and for all other computing, and liked many things about it, before I just gave up and went back to a mouse with physical buttons.
In short, get a cheap two button mouse with a scroll wheel and use that for RTW. Happy gaming!

Hello everyone I'm going to present to you tips for a healthy gore-filled campaign.
1 Auto-resolve at your own risk! You easily lose more troops than you should've here's a link to watch a video that proves my point
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QzGuVbtsroc
2 Build your economy BEFORE you prepare your large armies.
3 If you're playing as carthage greece or the house of Scipii taking Sicily should be your main priority.
4 When playing as a non-roman faction defeating much of rome before they get the marian reforms will prove very effective.
5 Testudo form isn't very effective against a human player because unlike the AI they know how to get around it
That's all I really have to say so..... Bye

2 Build your economy BEFORE you prepare your large armies.
#2 is far and away the most important. It slows you down slightly in the early game, but if you keep your army small and don't spend all your money, you'll soon be able to afford huge bribes and big armies.

I like the mac-like interface of the RTW initialization screens. They allow you to set the video resolution and a few other interface items. Also it looks like you can set the various runtime parameters as in Windows, but I haven't tried this yet.
One minor issue is that the background music cuts out about half-way through the loading screen for tactical battles. I've reported this to rometwsupport@feralinteractive.com

Yes you can (when they emulate a mouse motion like scroll) however I have found the Apple mouse cannot right and left click at the same time that and sometimes I click left when I meant right often meaning my army gets killed so I swapped to a Logitech mouse for gaming.
However we have one in the office for testing and the game does support it if you wish to play with one.

I'm running it on an early 2009 MB with the 256MB version of the 9400m on a 1440x900 monitor with almost everything on high so it wont stutter with large armies. So, I have a moment to spare to say yours will handle it just fine :D

i've never played this on a Mac, but i've played it on a few PC's for years. my work HP laptop is a centrino duo with an ATI HD 2600. my old home PC is a Athlon 64 3200 and a ATI x1950 graphics card with 256MB RAM.
played great with full graphics on each machine with XP, Vista and Windows 7 32 and 64 it versions. I did have problems with Medieval Total War and Rome Total War with an old nvidia card i had. this is why i switched to ATI. it was a known problem on the TW forums with nvidia drivers past version 50 or 60.
it's an old game and not very graphics intensive

If I retake Ankyra in the Barbarian Invasion as the Eastern Romans after it rebels it crashes every time as the scroll is coming up after my general says, "Victory". So yes it crashes. However, I haven't had it crash any other time. I also sent an email.
Mine has been crashing constantly lately. Just as I get going it keeps crashing. What's the turnaround time on hearing from Feral? It's been 2 days for me and nothing yet.

It's should come next week we have had a few small delays as we have been been working on the crash mention in this forum (and we have fixed it and released a patch), you can email me using my forum user name as the name and @feralinteractive.com as the rest of the email.
I don't want to write it in the forums to avoid the spam that will follow but if you email it will forward through to my account.

Does anyone know if this(the mac) version supports mods? And, if so, how to get them to work?
On windows, you would put the mod folder in the rome root director, and then add the following commands to the startup parameter "-mod:<insert name of mod folder here> -show_err" to get them to work. I tried doing this with a mod, and so far it hasn't worked, but perhaps I just made a mistake. It could have something to do with the fact that it doesn't seem that the game files are actually in the folder, but on an image in the folder.. seems kind of weird.

I noticed someone on this forum talking about an issue with the game turning purple and green.
My game got here on Friday, i just unpacked it today. However, after i installed and started a quick battle, it worked fine. Five minutes into the battle, the screen had purple and green blotches, and looked all weird.
It did the same in several other battles i started, and it happened on the campaign screen and in a campaign battle.
What can we do?

I've had the game for a week or so now. Played two campaigns (partially), one as the Scipii and my current one as the Julii. Fought about 30 (?) battles on the tactical map with no purple or green blotches. Where are you getting the blotches?
Also, what are your system specs and how have you set the information on the first screen (the mac window, not the game screen)?
I got my copy about a week ago and im loving it :D. I was just curious though i think i remember someone saying there'd be a checkbox or something to unlock all the factions but i can't find it. Was that feature included or am i imagining things?

Yes, have a look in the Advanced tab in the opening Options Panel (the one before you go full screen).

This is most likely because you have enabled and blocked the game using the Apple firewall, Apple's firewall will "sign" the application if you have it blocked in doing so it alters the executable which causes the game to have side effects.
The easiest fix is to not place Rome (or BI) on your blocked list THEN reinstall from the DVD. The only time the game goes online is for the software update check and that is anonymous. If you don't want it to check disable it in game this will still work and also mean Apple don't sign the game causing the executable to be changed.

Don't know but I know it is Apple's firewall, as a random guess you are still running the firewall (but not blocking the game) I suspect when you go online OS X goes overzelous and signs the app "for security" causing the game exe to get damaged...
Drop support a line and we can look into it however I am certain the cause is still Apple's firewall in some way :(

Okay. So I haven't been posting to the thread in awhile, but that is because I've been dedicating some serious time to RTW on my 24" iMac. By the way, RTW looks awesome on the big screen.
So far I've noticed that it seems to be pretty stable, unless you play it for 6 hours straight, then the iMac starts to get a bit fussy.
Relative stability aside, I have experienced two significant issues.
The first was during a campaign playing Carthage. About 220BC I experienced a glitch where when I clicked on an army stack I had in Sicily, it would show units from a stack located in Egypt. Not too bad ehh? Well, when I would hit end turn, the game would crash. Once it just froze, then twice it quit back to the desktop and I had to relaunch RTW. Unfortunately, my only save game for that campaign is on that ill fated turn, so I can't continue - unless I really enjoy crashes... BUT! It's okay, I just started another campaign as the Greek City States - and I'm enjoying that game alot more.
The second issue is, no matter what I do with the settings, I can't seem to run Barbarian Invasion without the graphics being jerky. I've changed resolution, lowered graphic quality etc. It just doesn't seem to help. Now I noticed this same jerkiness the first time I opened RTW orginal, but it resolved itself the second time I opened the game. Regardless of the graphics, BI is still playable.
Anyway, those two issues aside, this is a great build for mac. Although, while my favorite faction was the Britons, I am really starting to like the Greeks. There is nothing quite like watching a cohort of crack Roman Legionaries impale themselves on my pikes.
But, if you are using phalanx, be sure to bring lots of cavalry!:)

Hello all,
Just a quick note to say that if you're experiencing problems with the game, please do let our support guys know ( support AT feralinteractive DOT com ), as it helps us to find and fix bugs in the game. Furthermore they might be able to offer you a workaround, fix or pre-release patch. I know we released an automatic update for Barbarian Invasion last Friday, so if you haven't played BI since then, launch the game and download the update… it may solve any problems you might be having.

Contact the support email and attach a support report (see Read Me for details) and we can have a look I still suspect the firewall in some way but if you contact us with a support report we can look into your specific case. The best thing to do is contact support, it is run by staff that have worked on the development of the game so they are very knowledgeable and should be able to help you. You can check by having a look in System Preferences, then Security & Firewall to see if you have any turned on. If you're interested, you can also read more about their general usefulness in link:

So I just received RTW in the mail yesterday and haven't played it much but have checked it out. I have been awaiting its release since it was announced and am glad to be able to play it now, it really is an awesome game. I have been following this forum and want to thank Ian and Edwin for their work. I do have a question about the startup. Are the disk files supposed to open every time the cd is put in and is there a way to change that? And also is there a way to not show the game files drive and have its files open every time I open the game? Thanks a lot feral, I will be having much fun playing this game.

Well, Ian was right! The update fixed the jerky graphics and BI now runs as smooth as RTW (actually, it seems to be a bit smoother...).
SECOND,
is there a way to not show the game files drive and have its files open every time I open the game?
That would also be something I would like to know.
THIRD,
You guys at Feral still did a great job with this title! :)

No, the data for the game is stored on a locked dmg image (so it cannot get damaged etc). The game needs the game data to play so it has to mount it when you play and unmount it when you stop playing.
And also is there a way to not show the game files drive and have its files open every time I open the game?
I know about the window opening on mount we are looking at improving it but the art of image creation is a murky and sometimes undocumented one. I have added your comments to the open issue in our bug tracker about it although I don't think it will be a quick fix.

Easy way to check is reinstall the application and then run it on a standard admin account. I don't know specifics off the top of my head but if Apple does something with the signing of the application when in parental mode it could be related.
Drop support an email with a support report and we can investigate your specific issue. Support is easier over email where we can share specific details about your setup and machine and the game without the whole world knowing the details. :)

It's available to buy in most countries in the world without needing to import it.
Yes the Mac version is not the PC version, they are separate and would not be under the same license key. The PC and Mac versions are under different publishing deals so are separate products.
Think of it like the PS3 and the 360, if you download a game for the 360 you don't get a free PS3 copy. Same thing applies with Mac and PC, buying a copy of a game on Windows does not mean it works on Mac.

I've finished my first campaign game in victory as the Franks. Good fun, this campaign didn't crash once.
However, I had one glitch. It looked like the auto-move feature took a stack of ships onto the English countryside. The ships got stuck on the actual land and did not move, even through end turns. This glictch DID NOT crash the game and it didn't really do anything except deprive me of the use of the particular units.
Fortunately, when I reloaded BI the next day to continue the campaign, the problem self-corrected and the ships were back in the water were they belonged - ready to pillage and plunder.
If not for the fact that they were pretty much utterly destroyed by pirates over the next two turns put an end to that though...:)
Still, great job Feral!

If you get something like that in the future, email your save game. To do this make a save called "Glitch" or similar as soon as you see it and send it to us. The one you described sounds like a PC bug which we have seen a few times on Windows and Mac. But if you do have a bug that you can reload from a save send it to us and we can investigate.

Perhaps this is widely known, but why was a multiplayer campaign mode never created for this game or its expansions? Its lack surely would be the only thing preventing RTW from being the greatest strategy game of all time. If the game can handle coordinating RTS for multiplayer, what's so tough about the turn based campaign?

I don't know but I can have a guess... The number of variables to keep in sync is very complex and you have knock on effects that you need to deal with, with only one Human and the rest being AI the problem is simple once you get two humans you get lots of questions.
A few simple ones I can think of are who controls the AI threading? What happens when humans negotiate with humans? How do you control the senate in the game when you have two humans playing as the other human players skill will be hard to evaluate etc etc. All of these might have simple answers but all of them are not currently dealt with inside the Rome code so would need to have custom code written for them.
Basically I think it would be a great feature but I think it also has loads of problems that don't appear obvious but the more you think about it the bigger side effects and problems might occur. As Rome had the greatest popularity as a single player game and coop play was not yet popular as a genre when it was developed, I guess it was overlooked as a valid option.

In the particular case of my Franks campaign, I did save it as soon as the ship stack got stuck on land. However, it resolved itself when I reloaded that same saved game. I also couldn't get the error to repeat/
I didn't fret the crash with the Carthaginian campaign, because I started a new game and it didn't reoccur. But, I can still send the saved game for the Carthaginians along to the support email.

I'm laying siege to carthage and it has large stone walls. But when my siege towers get up to the walls, none of my units "can be equipped with them" and the ones that were automatically assigned to the towers either instantly drop them or seem to be stuck trying to get in at the bottom.
I did a quick search on the net and it seems that this is a bug on the PC side too. But I just wanted to check to see if I was doing something wrong....
PS Any tips on how to beat elephants defending in a siege? Flaming arrows routs them but once I'm close to the town square they come back into battle pretty quickly.

Currently the DVD is required. We get asked about this a lot, so I can say that we're working on a new solution, but right now I don't have a date for when that'll be ready.

A possible workaround for the 'game popping up in a presentation' thing… not many people know this but if you hold down the mouse/trackpad button as you start up your Mac, it ejects the disc before OS X starts. Still requires you to remember that the disc is in there though! :D

It is not supported but if you convert the image to read write you can then edit the contents just like the PC version. I plan to try and get a documented but unsupported "how to" guide at some point.
I have seen people in forums saying they have had mods working so you should be good to go.

My understanding of converting a file to read write is to click on it once and get info and then in Sharing & Permissions make changes. Unless those are not the steps, I do them and then still after unlocking the master lock icon, I can not make any changes.

That is correct for files NOT volumes. If the volume is a Read Only volume you need to convert the entire thing to a Read/Write volume. The RomeData.dmg is a compressed and read only volume. You need to use DiskUtility or DropDMG to convert it to a Read/Write format, you can then edit away.

Right! Did it with DiskUtility. That worked, but just so people know, it made the file grow from 4 gigs to 15 gigs.

I just purchased this game and have been having a fair amount of problems with it. I don't know if it's because of my computer (2.16GHz MacBook w/ GMA 950 Graphics), but I can play the strategy map completely fine, but when I want to go into the battle map it crashes on me. It has worked sometimes, but 90% of the time it will crash right it enters the map. Anyone have this problem, or a solution for me? I love this game, I used to play it all the time on PC, this is/was the one game I really wanted for the Mac all along.
Thanks,

Hi guys, purchased a copy of rtw Gold t'other day for my partner's MAC & we have been thoroughly enjoying it. Thanks.
But I've got a bit of a problem, that I would be grateful if someone could please help me with. This afternoon we tried to get some LAN battles working with my (PC) version. But...
The Mac version reports player desynchronisation the moment a LAN battle is commenced, at the deployment stage (or straightaway in historical battles). This results in Bad Craziness, & each of us fighting a completely different battle! Has anyone else come up against this particular problem?
Is the Mac version incompatible in multiplayer with the PC version? Could it possibly be some option I need to set up or enable or disable in her Mac's system settings, something that's interfering with the game? I've read in here about firewall problems, but am chary to go clicking away in there without knowing what I'm doing.
I'm pretty sure it's at the Mac end because the error message always says it's at the Mac end; neither of us have mods installed so it's definitely not a game version error. I also got her to disable Airport & plug a network cable in just in case it was something simple like the wireless signal dropping out, & that didn't cure it.
I'm completely stumped. Could anyone else please help me?
Thank you in advance, & apologies for the length of the post...

This afternoon we tried to get some LAN battles working with my (PC) version. But...
Cross platform play is not possible this is down to how the PC and the Mac OS do maths the maths functions are slightly different meaning it is impossible to play again each other. We did try, I think I have posted a more detailed explanation earlier in this thread but the long and short of it is that Mac/PC gaming is not feasible.

Strange I would email support with a support report, you are not using a none standard keyboard (like Dvorak?). I know (and have tested) it works fine on UK, US, FR, IT, DE and IT keyboards running in all 5 languages.
Hopefully it is just something you have not saved correctly which support can solve for you.

LAN and Online both work fine but only Mac <-> Mac. Due to differences between Mac and PC maths libraries cross platform play is not possible.

Yes although just like the PC mods are not supported.

I don't know of a mod that people have not gotten working, we have heard reports of a few sound issues on the odd mod but they should all work.
You will have to work out what files go where but you should be able to get it running. I have not had time myself to try though.

Ok, I bought this game a couple of weeks ago and am really enjoying it. I've got a few questions though:
I started playing (as I do on most games) with the difficulty levels of Hard/Hard. I'm finding this too difficult. Can I change the difficulty down to Medium/Medium without starting a new campaign?
How do I make an Alliance? It seems quite arbitrary as to whether I'm offered this option when I engage in diplomacy with someone.
Is it possible to run this game in 'windowed' mode? I get sucked in for far too many hours, when really I should be doing other stuff at the same time. Also, is it just me, or has 10.6.3 degraded performance somewhat?
Thanks!

when i try to play online (and i think against other mac players) whenever i try to start the game game ranger says "failed to start game" The same thing happens whenever i host or join a game. Then, when i open the game myself, it goes to the multiplayer window and searches for the game, then can't find it. Is this a game ranger problem, or a different problem?

I think this is a problem with your machine/network. Email support along with a step by step guide of what you do when trying to play. Also attach a support report so we can check your installation and Rome error logs.

1.) No, but you can cheat to grab some extra cash
2.) I think it is fairly arbitrary you can't always have this option it depends on your situation, what your faction is and what faction you are trying to ally with.
3.) Yes but it is not a supported option (although we have used it in the office without problems). Look in the Rome preferences plist file (Read the FAQ on the DVD if you don't know where this is) and find the fullscreen=1 and change it to fullscreen=0 you now have windowed mode.
3.5) Not heard anything about performance issues if you email support with your thoughts and a support report so we know your machines spec we can look into it.

What I mean is I much prefer digital download, and can't be bothered buying online from websites I don't know much about, or buying from the US, waiting a few weeks, box probably gets crushed from shipping, and having a box I have no room for wasting space and having to have the DVD in to play (do you have to?), I just much rather buy it as a digital download, which I prefer Steam as it's always tied to my account with no limiting DRM. If shops around here actually stocked Mac games then I would buy it if it wasn't overpriced, but seeing as none do, I'd rather digital. I even bought COD2 Mac recently off eBay, and told the guy just to keep the box and email me the cd key, and I downloaded it and used my CD key with it.

No Guides exist a few forum posts but it is strictly DIY right now. I have promised to try and make a small tutorial if I have some spare time over a weekend although I have kinda busy right now. :)
The rule of thumb is make your Data.dmg a R/W version using disk image then place all the modded data in the right places.

1. Seems normal. It's been a while, but I'm almost positive the PC version did the same thing.
2. Playable factions are the only stable ones. You could probably edit the same PC equivalent file in the data folder to play the other factions you weren't intended to play.

1.) Yes we thought we caught them all but it does sometimes happen.
2.) Yes again :) If you want factions that will make the game potentially unstable you need to make the data dmg read/write and edit the ini files manually. As none playable factions are officially unsupported (on PC & Mac) they are not an official option although will be as playable as the PC (and also just as unsupported).

You need to convert the disk image from a read-only one to a read/write one. As yet I've not found a way to do this. Have you?
If you haven't then you'll not be able to save your changes to the files, despite being able to look at their contents.

To convert a disc image, you just need to open Disk Utility, drag the disc image into the area on the left, select the image in that list and click on the 'convert' option in the top bar. Then choose in the 'image format' drop down 'read / write'.
That should hopefully do the trick for you!
Might be best to back up first and make a copy of the disk image and put it somewhere safe.
I've not done this to the rome image... so can't say it won't break

Nah mate, I managed to do exactly as design-is said (cheers design-is! Thank you very much mate!) & made an "unlocked" copy of the disk image. You have to check the appropriate option in the little drop-down box & you can tell if you have been successful because the icon for the resultant disk image is changed from one shaped like a small portable hard drive to an icon that looks like a folder icon with the picture of the small portable hard drive on it.
I have actually done this last night, & I have been able to modify the contents of said image, & Rome plays fine. My first step was following the guide on twcenter.net regarding adding the unplayable factions to the campaign as playable choices & modifying the preferences file to turn off those bloody stupid floating green arrows.
Woo, & indeed hoo. A test campaign as Thrace is on-going as we speak.
However, all my attempts to install a mod-foldered mod (Lusted's Terrae Expugnandae Gold) have thus far been abortive. The folder goes in place, I presume I'm putting the switch in the right place (the advanced space in the options tab in the Mac pre-launcher window?) because I can tell it's reading from the correct mod-directory because I get the Lusted pre-movie screen...
But then the game crashes back to desktop. I can't seem to get the "-showerr" option to work, so I can't tell where the problem is, but I fear it's something to do with the way the Mac version uses it's file structure, which if I'm guessing right means that a mod-foldered mod is out of the question. I have had to suspend all efforts at the moment as the girlfriend wants to play her vanilla campaign so I have to put everything back where it came from, but I shall next attempt to install a "total conversion" mod that does not rely on mod-foldering, something that I suspect the Mac version is going to like far more than the rather fussy way RTW swaps between its mod & data directories when you are using a mod-foldered mod.
Anyway, thought I'd keep everyone updated, & many many thanks again to design-is.

I like this thread, but I also love this game!! So, instead of making a new thread, I'm just going to keep this thread going...
Alright, I'm looking for advice/opinions. I've got a campaign going in the original Rome and I'm playing as the Germanic tribe. I'm about halfway through the territory requirements. My tribe has spread throughout Europe and England, Ireland. I got too big for my Roman allies to stay loyal so they've turned on me.
I've got just enough troops on my Eastern front to keep the Scythians at bay. I've got three armies in Spain, picking up more territory from the Julii and I've got 5 northern Italian towns, including Rome, trying to fill out two full stack armies before pushing on to Scipii territory.
I'm in a great position to force them out of Italy and Spain. I should feel anxious to experience the best things in life according to Conan the Barbarian; To crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women. Instead, I just feel like it's become too tedious of a kingdom to manage.
Usually, when I start a campaign, I micromanage all of my towns. So now, on to my question. What do you do? Do you let the AI auto-manage your towns and just keep Generals on the key towns that need to be micromanaged? Do you let your interior towns do their recruiting and building or just one or the other?
What I'm hoping for is to know what advice people have to offer on their experiences with letting the AI manage their towns so that I can start incorporating good ideas into my campaign play style.
I've actually only beat the grand campaign 3 times, because usually when I get a tribe to this point, I start losing interest. I'm hoping to figure out what I need to change in order to keep the fun going in the second half.

How do you play as a faction other than the Romans in campaign mode?
To unlock a faction you must defeat it in a campaign. You may also enable all the playable factions by using the Enable All Factions check box in the Advanced panel of the pre-game Options window.
Hope that helps,

Napoleon is only available on the Windows platform right now so we know as much as you do! Although looking at the system specs on their website I think you should be fine.
Checking out the TotalWar website forums and speaking to some members their might offer some more detailed information.

Thanks for the help already, but could you please tell me EXACTLY where it is, so an idiot like me can find it.
Thanks.
Here you go!

To unlock a faction you must defeat it in a campaign. You may also enable all the playable factions by using the Enable All Factions check box in the Advanced panel of the pre-game Options window.

I know its out but do I have to purchase it online and download it or can I get it from staple or gamestop and install it with the cds?
You should be able to buy it on DVD from anywhere that sells Mac games, including our online store. We don't currently offer downloads of our games (except for demos!)

Just making sure it is stable and playable before we release it. I have completed 2 complete campaigns myself on Rome PPC (so it does exist) but a few issues still remain. We should have a private PPC beta for people who have contacted support or ordered from our site soon. If you have a PPC Mac and own Rome contact support and they can add you to the beta list.
PPC has been a lot harder than we first thought and has required rewriting or reengineering of some fairly large areas, we also need to make sure these PPC changes do not effect the Intel version negatively so this has more time than expected.
Soo...Rome: Total War on Steam? Using SteamPlay? Pirates, too? Would be great, yes?
We are very keen to work with Valve. Unfortunately, Steam's business model makes it difficult for us to participate in the launch.
As soon as we have a game which will work with the business model we will be delighted to have it delivered by Steam.
Feral will be making it's games available for digital download from it's own store and through a range of 3rd party partners starting in the summer

hello.
i bought the game since it first came out and had a blast playing through the imperial campaign lag free... this was a couple of months ago. i took a break for my mcats and now that i'm done i started to play again yesterday. except this time, there is a ton of lag. the load times for battles are about 2 minutes and i find myself reading the Sun Tzu's quote about 100 times. the game runs smoothly while i can hear CD spinning, but when it stops spinning and i press another button, the screen suddenly freezes for 3 seconds until the CD starts to spin again. this happens over and over again for the entirety of play.
i found that by reinstalling the game, the lag completely disappears for the first time i start the program and comes back when i quit and play the game for the second time after reinstalling. can someone please help me with this? it makes it really annoying and difficult to manage cities and fight battles when this happens... and i don't want to have to reinstall every time i want to play the game smoothly.
oh yeah, and my specs are 21 inch imac 3.06GHz 4GBram nvidia 9400 version 10.6.3

That's silly. Aspyr already has a piss poor digital store, we don't need yet another Mac publisher doing their own thing. Please, jump on the Steam bandwagon. Gamers want their digital games in as few locations as possible. Steam just opened the floodgates for Mac gaming and I personally won't buy a single digital Mac game from anywhere else going forward.

Are you making sure to run the Rome: Total War application from the Applications folder on your hard drive, rather than from the DVD?
What's wrong with [Steam's] business model?
There's nothing wrong with it! But for now at least, it doesn't work for us. If we can get it to work, we'll be on there quicker than you can say 'digital purchase and delivery network with strong community features'.
Are you able to qualify [Feral's plans for a digital download store and being part of other download services] a bit more? I'd consider buying a digital download version, but I don't really care to have another disc lying around.
Digital downloads of Feral games have been in the works for quite some time, and I believe we've mentioned it before on this forum. We're saying 'in the summer' at the moment, but this may change. As soon as we have a more definite date, we'll be shouting it from the rooftops!
We try to be as open as we possibly can on these forums, 'cos we're gamers too and it sucks to be given rubbish information! Sometimes we just can't talk in as much detail as we'd like for business reasons though, so I hope everyone understands. :)
In the spirit of full disclosure and openness, however, I can exclusively reveal that today the biscuit of choice in the Feral office is the dark chocolate-coated McVitie's Digestive (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digestive_biscuit)! Delicious.

I know this is a bit of a silly question, but...
Why is Feral so good at porting games to Mac?
I ask this because, the Rome Total War port is one of the most stable crossover titles I've played. I have had some bugs, oddly though, they seem to be the same ones I had on a PC.
What do you guys do that makes your games work, besides putting a lot of time in?

To be honest, putting a lot of time in, particularly in testing, is one of the biggest things. We've also got some extremely talented and experienced programmers who have a habit of doing things comparable to witchcraft when it comes to porting games.
But essentially the whole company is held together by the tireless dedication, intelligence and good looks of the guys who represent Feral on the forums. Yep.

Hello all,
Just wondering if I'm the only person playing RTW on an old G5?
I'm loving the game but wondered if anyone is having the same problems with the siege weapons. I am having no luck at all with putting them against the walls as there is no cursor change, and my catapults don't feel like hitting the gates.
You can only attack cities for so long with a ram!!
Would like to know that I'm not the only one with an ancient mac.

I think one of a small handful of PPC players who are playing, I am glad you are after the couple of months of work we spent on the PPC support it's great to hear about someone playing on a G5 or G4:)
The siege towers is an issue but you can usually get them to work but its tricky it involves changing the camera angle and trying to catch the moment that the icon changes.
Catapults work fine here as do Rams (as long as you don't drop them). We don't have a patch planned in the short term but we do plan to release maintenance patches over time and we will see if we can fix the problem with siege towers on PPC for the next patch.
Cheers,

I know they destroy gates in fact I use them as my main method when playing the game. The normal catapult is pretty inaccurate but will get there in the end. If you use the upgraded catapults they are much more accurate and destroy walls and gates quicker.

another PPC/G5 player here http://www.foynls.co.uk/phpbb/images/smilies/icon_cool.gif
i have the same issue with siege weapons - what camera angle do i need to change to in order to see the "flaming tower" icon to be able to attack with towers or onagers, please ?
there's also appears to be an issue with adding crew to siege weapons that have had the original herberts killed (or changing crews during deployment) - there's no working "mouse over unit changes to a hand icon" facility that i can see so replacement troops can "pick up" an abandoned weapon - once the first crew are killed, the ram or whatever becomes entirely redundant....
oh - this also applies to sapping points - never have been able to use them !
pity - otherwise brilliant game, but these flaws (obviously i'm aware that it may be operator error !) make the sieges a real pain in the arse !

We know about all of these issues and they have all been reproduced by our support team in some way however fixing them on the PPC version is not the easiest task in fact getting Rome on PPC was decidedly tricky! We are collecting information on what machines and OS people to try and help with finding a reliable solution that does not have unwanted side effects.
The easiest (most likely to win) way of having sieges even without this issue is using projectile weapons from long range or have a second army and give them all the siege weaponry the AI will use them perfectly. Not a fix but it is something you can do now to make sieges a lot more fun.

I take it that getting a second army involved as you suggest is done in the same was as with fleets of ships or standard units - place the second army, suitably tooled up with siege equipment, against the city walls, then instigate the attack with another army under player control ???

Final testing is just completing now, in fact I just returned to my desk from one of the QA machines testing the installers.
Upload of all the data will take about 7 hours and we leave work in under 6 hours so it might not be until tomorrow.
The initial batch of mods available will be:
ModEnabler (This makes your data image read/write allowing you to install Mods and use the level editor)
Rome Total Realism - Installs the 1.9 Platinum Edition
Non Playable Factions - Enables the Factions that were designed to be AI only allowing the user to play as them. Some text/descriptions will be missing on these factions. (This is not the same as the Unlock All Factions option in the retail game).
Europa Barbarorum - Installs the latest 1.2 version (with all hot fixes).
All of these mods are installed using the ModEnabler script which comes with full video guides on what to do, making it (I hope) a painless process.
I am open to making more scripts of popular mods although it is a lot easier for me to add support for mods that support the mod:switch command. If people do have suggestions, download links for the PC mod and a link to the original modders (so I can let them know about a Mac version) will make it easier and faster for me to get them converted.
I plan on posting some information on the Feral Facebook page about the mods first so I can get a few people testing it before we let everyone know on our website etc.
If you would like the earliest access please check out Feral's Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/feralinteractive) in the discussion area you will find a discussion on modding I will be posting test links to all the Mac mods there first.
P.S. I am using the Facebook page as the initial test area because it is admin'd by Feral making it easier to update when trying out new things like this mod. Once the links have been tested by more people than just the Feral office I will post links in this thread as well. I just want to make sure the mod installers are rock solid before posting links everywhere :)

Mods can be applied but mods create their own saves as the game data is different. You can have saves for a mod and the full game and they will not interfere or appear in each others load/save lists.

This is a mod made by fans so things will be different to the full game.
I can't spend to much time on trouble shooting as this is a mod that is not supported or developed by Feral. That said I checked and zoom in and out work fine using the mousewheel and NumPad + and - which are the the controls for this as specified in the options menu.
I suggest you have a look at the keys in the options menu as the mods will have slightly different keys to the full game and I think your problem is down to pressing the wrong keys.

feel free to drop me a pm about issues you find with as much detail as possible. I am taking a rest this weekend but I will see if I can do some editing of the mod to fix Mac issues in a few weekends time.
If you happen to fix them yourself ;) please give me the instructions :)

Yes you can if you want to. Just use the mod: options in BI instead of Rome. I have not tested it but the Rome 1.5 and BI code is virtually identical.

Crash in Rome Total Realism. Fortunately there was an autosave immediately before the battle, so I'll just refight.
Never had a crash in RTW, either on PC or Mac.

Dude, you've been the tech business for long enough to know that the above sentence is equivalent to:
- Don't worry, the safety's on.
- Just put some more lighter fluid on it.
- Here's the credit card, use it only for emergencies.

Here's a data point: I started RTW:BI, entered mod: rtrpe in the advance options screen. The game started, then crashed when I hit continue campaign.
I do appreciate getting RTR ported to the Macintosh, and I do appreciate your individual effort in setting up the mods Rome Total Realism and Eurpora Barbarorum, but still. It's frustrations like this that cause people to just throw up their hands and walk away.

Got an update, i have got rtr to completly on BI no bugs, only annoying thing there is no music playing what kind makes there is no atmosphere in the game, honestly though i may have got rtr to work, but i really want to make EB to work on BI but i cant select a campaign or it crashes if i start a custom battle, if you can get it to work in any way please tell ME!!!!:D:D:D

This is a modification of the game so it might have issues, it is not supported and something that I have done in my spare time with Feral's blessing to make it easier to play mods on the Mac. Mods especially early on have problems that are solved by the community (hence most mods are version 1.9 etc) this is the first ever (semi official) Mac release but I hoped the Mac community would take this with two hands and help polish out any issues some users might have.
Mac users might not be used to Mods but by their very nature they are not guaranteed to be tested or stable on their machine. I am still willing to try and help improve and get more mods working on the Mac but please understand Mods are not part of the retail game, they might have issues and they are only successful with community support. I am only one person so anything Mac Rome modders can do to solve problems and make it easier for other users is really appreciated not just by me but all other Mac Rome players.

Just wondering but do you have any reason why you cannot use Rome instead of BI?
I few ideas that spring to mind include, deleting all your preferences, maybe deleting your saved game information inside the mod folder on the data image. FYI, Mod save game information is saved inside the mod folder not in your preferences folder. Finally make sure your mod: Case spelling matches the case used on the data image again should not make a difference but worth trying.

Thanks for the reply! I did say that I appreciate your efforts, and I still do. Also, I'm the guy who called you "the best person in the universe" so your blood, sweat, and tears on this issue are much appreciated.
I'll put in some effort to track down the cause of the crash - would this be something I report to the RTR group? I tried to do that but couldn't figure out how to contact them - their forum/website is a mess.
What happened before the crash is that I attacked Tarentum and "maintained seige" as I needed to build some rams. So I end my turn and the Greek garrison from Croton pops over to attack me during the Greek turn. This calls out the Tarentum garrison into the field, which makes me happy as those phalanxes are easier to kill out in the open. So I know if I kill all of the enemy, I'll be able to take Tarentum a turn earlier and with lower losses.
So I spend some time (1/2 hour?) carefully flanking the Greek phalanxes, breaking their will, and spilling their blood. The battle ends, and up pops the Occupy/Enslave/Raze option. I pick Occupy, and the game crashes.
So I load the autosave and do the same, and the outcome is the same - I kill everyone, select Occupy, and watch the game crash.
I'm guessing the RTR logic doesn't handle the "win a field battle and get a city" logic correctly.
Thanks again for the RTW port and the RTR and EB mods.

I might be wrong but I am pretty sure the the last time I was in that area the AI code for Mac Rome and BI is identical. But I will try and check. :)

Thanks for the kind words, people helping and being friendly really helps spur me on to do more modding stuff. Your extra description is brilliant and just want I needed to help work out the problems. For the others reading this thread the descriptions of what you tried and how it crashes in PatrickCocoa's post is a great example of a good bug report.
If you PM me I will ping you my email and we can organise you sending me a save game of the battle so I can see what I can do as I have access to a debug version.
Thanks again for the time you put in your work has made it much easier for me to know what area of the game logic is failing. I will check my inbox tomorrow but for now I need sleep :)

Good point you should always be running the latest version of Rome TW. In this case the latest version of Rome and BI is 1.1.1.

I used to work in client support for a software vendor. If you're filing a bug report, pretend you're talking to a bomb-disposal guy over the phone and you're walking him/her through EXACTLY what to do. "Did I say clip the RED wire? I meant the BLUE wire. (pause). Hello? Hello?"
Anyway, I reloaded the game and changed two things and the turn completed successfully. What I did was to 1) allow a few hundred Greeks to flee the battlefield rather than killing almost all out of about 1,000 of them; and 2) select Enslave instead of Occupy.
I was worried that the couple hundred Greeks I let live would go occupy Tarrentum and I'd have to besiege it, but they just evaporated. Since the battle took place right next to Tarrentum on the strategic map, the game offered me the Occupy/Enslave/Raze option. This time (as mentioned above), I picked Enslave and the turn completed.
Of course, this violates the change-one-thing-and-see-if-that-fixes-it rule of debugging, but I wanted to move on with the game.

......but I wanted to move on with the game.
"Problem has workaround" best news I could have right now as freeing up programmer resources to fix unsupported mod issues right now is unlikely as we have a bunch of new games in the pipeline that is taking up all their time. :)
Have noted the issue though just in case someone else in the Mac modding community has a similar issue.
Thanks again!
