Reuters reports (http://tech.yahoo.com/news/nm/20090928/tc_nm/us_chinaunicom) that China Unicom has announced that it will begin selling the iPhone in China on October 1st alongside the official launch of the company's 3G wireless network. According to the report, China Unicom announced that the iPhone will sell for an unsubsidized price of 5,000 yuan (US$732.50), although it did not note which model would be offered at that price. The company will be offering 8 GB, 16 GB, and 32 GB models. Many companies quote a price for a stand-alone iPhone, but also offer heavily discounted, subsidized prices for people who sign multi-year service contracts.

Eight service packages being offered by Unicom would be available for iPhones, ranging from 126 yuan to 886 yuan per month, Unicom said in a statement. It said it would provide subsidies of 893 yuan to 4,253 yuan for people who sign up for the plans.China Unicom announced (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/08/28/china-unicom-announces-3-year-iphone-deal/) one month ago that it had struck a deal with Apple to offer the iPhone in China.

Wonder how Apple's going to ramp up production for this - surely making more millions and selling more internationally equates to a longer lead time next year to get a handset out?

Here in Finland the current waiting period for iPhone 3Gs is 8 weeks. Getting iPhones for China is clearly hurting availability at least in some European countries. The spokesman of the local operator said that availability is limited because a Chinese operator just bought 1 million iphones.

If you were one of those people that waited in line for the iPhone3G behind 300 people and were complaining... imagine having to wait in line behind several MILLION people

Of course the App Store is already in China. A few of my Music Healing apps sell there.

PLUS, surely they already had the iPod Touch there so that probably allowed for the Chinese App Store initially.

There's the grey market for iPhones as well ;).

The iPhone will be celebrating 60 years of communist rule :). I think Reuters got the day wrong here - you don't release products on public holidays ;).
