GoLive 6 totally rules.......
BBEdit for the necessary clean up that WYSIWYG generators spurt out on the odd occasions........
Very occasionally Flash....... although I'm now using LiveMotion.......
And lot's of Shockwave content........
When things get really heavy I get a developer in.........

BBedit is the way to go for HTML, JavaScript, etc. If you aren't too comfortable with HTML, JavaScript, etc., I would suggest Dreamweaver, or better yet a couple of O'Reilly mans. :)
Beyond BBedit,
I use Photoshop, ImageReady, Illustrator (old habits die hard,) for most graphic elements.
When I'm feeling daffy, I'll use Flash, Director, After Effects, Media Cleaner, or anything else that I can get my hands on.
If I am feeling really daffy, I'll whip out the QTVR studio.
I think the thing to remember though is that having a strong idea is the key. There are a lot of great looking sites out there with nothing to say other than someone has way too much free time. If you have something to say, frontpage should probably do the trick.
What was the question again?

Jul 18, 2002, 03:24 PM
I'm still at Dreamweaver 4, but I love it even if it runs in classic, I'd like to upgrade, but I got the whole studio setup and only Freehand wouldn't need an X upgrade, so screw it.
PS, My site is rough looking right now as I have been ignoring it for a little while;)

oh yeah, and that flossing site;)
sounds like dreamweaver, golive, and bbedit sound like very popular titles so far
but what the heck is bbedit and who makes it? i hear people spout the name but i have never seen it in stores
i may put a link to my pathetic yahoo free site (the one you make in five minutes...more like 2 hours)...the info is interesting but there are no images i use outside of the provided clip art and the digital camera i have is very poor for that type of stuff
but i am not one for too many graphics or photos since that's what all the pros tell me is the first mistake of a beginner like me...to load the site with pictures and have no content;)

Bbedit is a pretty robust HTML/word processing program. Think TextEdit with b@lls. :D
They make a "lite" version that is free. I'm not sure what the URL is though.......

Barebones software (The BB in BBedit.) You can buy it separately, or it used to come with Dreamweaver I think, it may still. You should be able to find BBedit through macmall in any case.

Well, I guess I might as well jump on the "everbody go look at my homepage" bandwagon. :D Mine's at <http://www.dalqe.com/>. I use straight-up BBEdit and Photoshop. I have GoLive, but I find it too damned clunky for my needs. Plus, I don't have PHP installed on my machine, so I like that I can save my work directly to my host's server from BBEdit.
Anyway, let me know what you think of it. :)

Thanks, KC! :D I'm actually not a huge fan of graphic-intensive personal sites. Many of my friends and family are using AOHell to dial-up, and I'd rather they spend their time on the content rather than fancy graphics.
That, and I'm still trying to figure Photoshop out. :D

I just used text edit, iPhoto (for the photo galleries) and I borrowed someone photoshop machine for some of the graphics
Just a question... Does the shadow around the sidebar format correctly in your browser?
Oh, and yes, I did notice that the index.html page doesn't have the </body> and </html> tags at the end... Gotta go fix it now...

I use GoLive, PhotoShop, Illustrator and LiveMotion. Think I'm and Adobe man? However, I'm not much of a designer. My new partner is and she uses the same tools along with InDesign 2.0 There be an update soon.
GoLive is a great wysiwyg editor, but it has a steeper learning curve than DreamWeaver. I prefer GoLive, but I may be bias because my sister works for Adobe.

Nice site cleo. It's crisp and energy efficient, that's how I like em. Expect a lot of hits now that you mentioned, after my thread asking people about webcounters my site started averaging 20 unique visitors a day. (Which is good considering theres nothing that great on it.)

I use the standard combo of Photoshop/Imageready + Dreamweaver ... and BBEdit Lite when the need arises.
I just got GoLive6 in the Adobe Web Design Suite so I'll be trying that...
I mess around with Flash as well, but my site right now is just dedicated to CSS layout practice.:)

There's a steeper learning curve with GoLive, but I think you'll like it if you give it some time. It took me a while to get used to it when switing from DreamWeaver 3 to GoLive 4. I think you'll like the SmartObjects, templates and components. Components are great for navigation menus and head graphics etc. The SmartObjects could be a little smarter when dealing with layered rollovers, which you can't really use, but you'll know what I mean soon enough.
No more saving for web and importing PhotoShop images. Nice.

There are lots of great resources out there for learning CSS, and seeing how the various browsers support it.
One of my favorites is at MacEdition.com, by the CodeBitch:

I have some more links somewhere...if you're interested.:)

I'm definitely looking forward to learning GoLive. I'm very familiar with Dreamweaver, so the toughest part will be getting used to the new interface, etc.
Anyone have LiveMotion experience as it relates to Flash?

You have a few choices. You can either make two CSS one for NN and one for IE. The second choice is to use pixels for your measurements and text. If your using boxes, you have to use a full box for NN 4.0 browser etc. When formatting tables make sure you do it in the parent tr. But CSS is the way to go for sure. Netscape doesn't have great support for borders etc, but you can use curved, dotted, and solid boxes. NN won't display partial boxes so make the choice if that matter to you or not.
If your having issues with tables collapsing in one browser or the other, just play with absolute widths and percentages. Sometimes you can fix certain issues with embedded tables.
For colors I would use the CSS list and not the original html color scheme. You'll find it easier to match and a better variety (in my opinion).
This is just a brief. I have much more specific information, but can't pull it out of my head right now. I'm having server issues.

I've got the o'reilly CSS handbook and most of it is about what browsers support what. great little pocketbook.
and depending on who your target audience is, it's usually best to preview stuff in IE, since that's what most of the web uses.

That isn't too bad. Honestly though, I think there is a bit too much blue on the site. And I am rather holding back on accepting your main logo on the top, where you have white script text on one side of the blue figure and then a rather overprominent black on the other side. If someone were to print that out, I think that the heavy blue with black wouldn't look so attractive, especially with that font.
On the other hand, the site and images load pretty fast. It's plain and simple. That's not too bad for a start.

Hey jef, thanks for the mention. :) I'm a bit late to join this thread, I know...
Hemingray.info is really just a "web presence" for my hobby. My real serious site is http://www.songofthesouth.net . For those of you who don't know what Song of the South is, it's the Walt Disney movie that Disney tries to hide because some people consider it "offensive". Some of you may know that the Splash Mountain ride is based upon part of that movie. The site started out as more of a hobby, but over the years it's turned into more of an awareness mission because of so many people looking for answers about this film... okay, that's enough. :)
For the record, I use GoLive 6 and I'll swear by it!

As you can see from my design history page (http://www.songofthesouth.net/about/oldsites/index.html), it took me a few years to settle on a design I liked. If only we had this much time to decide on a site design for our clients! :D
