View Full Version : Windows 7 Upgrade on Bootcamp

So I tried searching for this and I couldn't get a definitive answer so sorry if this is redundant.

I am looking to take advantage of the Windows 7 Student Discount but the offer is only good for an Upgrade version of Windows 7. I currently do not have a previous version of Windows. Is it possible to just use an Upgrade disk to install via bootcamp? Thanks for the help!

AFAIK, you'll need a full version of Windows 7 (or Vista, XP) to install under Boot Camp.

I am in the same boat. I got a 13 macbook pro with no Windows OS on it. Will I be able to install Windows 7 through boot camp and parallels? thanx.

As long as you are not looking for support from Microsoft you can get a full OEM version of Windows 7 (32 or 64 bit) at NewEgg for $99 ($109 after 10/20).

It is intended for preparation for resale of new systems, but should work just fine on Macs without previous licenses.

If you do have a previous license, so you can qualify for upgrade pricing, you should still be able to perfrom a clean install from the Windows 7 Upgrade disc, especially since this will be the only way to install if you only have is XP.

I think non-students even can as long as you have a .edu email that still works :)

Through the Digital River Windows 7 Offer, Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade and Microsoft Windows 7 Professional Upgrade will be available for students to pre-order starting on September 17th, 2009.

As the OP pointed out, the $29 is an upgrade version only (as is snow leopard for $29). If you don't already have a license to upgrade, you don't qualify even if you have a .edu address.
