Hmm, no change on my Apple store status. In GB we can't see if there is a pre-charge on our credit cards, but I would love to know if any fellow 6800 buyers have had a pre-charge in the last couple of days etc.

Hello to all -
Glad I found this thread yesterday. It’s a damn shame so many of us are in the same boat, but at least I’m not alone. Ordered my G5 from the on-line Apple store at 6:59am PDT June 9. The original ship on or before was 7/30 now 8/20. If it slips into September I’ll go ballistic. I’ve been a Mac user since 1984 (128k) so there’s no chance I’ll join the Widows brigade. With a little luck maybe some of us will actually see our G5s ship in the next three days.

Earlier, I gave Apple a call. The salesguy I talked to used to be an engineer at Apple, and when asked if I could speak to someone who would know something about the 6800 cards, he replied, "I don't know anyone who would know, but even if I did, I couldn't give you their number. Engineers don't talk to people."

I couldn't help from being reminded of Officespace and the interview that ended with, "God damnit, Can't you see I'm a people person!"

Thats great, I talked to him yesterday. He was one of the most knowledgeable sales reps i've ever talked to. Too bad that he gave me the same speech.

Forgive if me if I'm wrong, but I can't help but think that this is nothing more than a plug for a sales rep at MacMall. I too ordered from them on 7/22 and according to the guy I spoke with last night, they haven't gotten the big shipment in yet. I'm also in contact with someone from this messgae board who ordered from them in early June and he too is still waiting.

I find this hard to believe too. I ordered 12ET on 6/9 and have heard nothing from ClubMac yet (affiliated with MacMall) about shipping/let alone a tracking number. I will try and give them a call as well and see whats up.

I had a pre-authorization on Monday, this would have been my third. I did a custom order with the 6800. My delivery date is Aug. 31 or sooner... I hope I can squeek in on the Aug. 20th date, that would be really awesome then of course I would be waiting on the 30 inch Cinema Display...

Time to bite the bullet.
I've waited so long for my G5 2.5 mac I guess I can wait abit longer. Decided to update order with bluetooth + BT keyboard and mouse (+66GBP), FC express (£200-130 GBP)and 10 mth interest free credit. As I'm putting myself to the back of the Q (from June 11th). I have decided to cancel reseller order and place order through apple store UK, (Sales rep said they'll be filling applestore orders first) Est Build time 6 weeks. (I've heard that before somewhere)

Wow. Is a bluetooth mouse and keyboard really worth waiting another 6 weeks? I'm sure your reseller will get your mac to you quicker than that.

It is a plug for a sales rep. He has taken very good care of me and the clients that I have sent him. I want to return the favor.

It is also more than a plug. It does not seem to make sense to me to place Apple Store orders now with mid-September ship dates when I suspect that orders for stock machines placed at MacMall now could very well ship in a week or two. By posting this here some people who have not ordered yet might save a lot of time. Others with long waits might be able to place an order at MacMall/PCMall/ClubMac and cut their wait time.

If you are implying that it did not really ship - I will post pix if needed. I was not the only person to ship. I believe that they shipped around 200.

Hurrah - NOT!

Just called Apple to confirm the information I was given yesterday. My ship date was 16th Aug. That obviously didnt happen. I was then told the 20th but an Apple sales rep. Called again to confirm that, and find out approx what day it would arrive... and guess what....

Apple sales guy #2 tells me that he has no idea where the other guy got the 20th date from, and I should expect it 6th September!!!!??!!?!?!

I am so pissed off right now.

I got rather angry on the phone, and demanded they ship me at least one of the two 23" screens I ordered, so I can hook it up to my PC and get on with some work while I wait for this mystical device to arrive.

I would love to have a one to one with Steve Jobs. Him as Apple CEO, and me as one of his 'switchers'. Grrrrrrrrrr!!

Don't think i'll be adding my name to the shipped or delivered box on my own website for a LONG time...

Wow! - your either brave and noble, or you just stopped your mac being delivered in the next couple of days for the sake of BT gadgets!?! :/

I have seriously thought about cancelling my reseller order (it's been over 8 weeks afterall), and as far as I know, at least another 6 have already cancelled from the same guy, but on the other hand -I don't want to wait so much longer, and there is a lot of suspician that Apple is trying to close down a lot of these little guys to bolster their own Apple store sales, which apart from being a ***** thing to do, is like biting the hand that feeds you, since without all these small companies selling Mac kit for the last 10 years, there are a lot of poepl who would have never heard of Apple, let alone become converted! :/

I just called and spoke to a product manager at MacMall. He said they have not received or shipped out any large quantity yet and he also added that they do not know how many they will receive in the shipment that is expected to arrive this Friday. He said they have enough on order to satisfy all current backorders, but he does not know how many Apple will actually ship to them. I mentioned your claim about getting a shipping confirmation and that you had ordered on the same day that I did, but he said he would need a name or an order # to confirm that. Feel free to send me a private message if you like.

I actually just called ClubMac and am waiting for a return phone call from a product manager in the next 2 hours who will be able to give me more informaiton.

I also called Kieth (at MacMall), and he said that there was an initial shipment that came in over this weekend of 200 units. The reason he was able to get that 7/22 order placed so soon was that he had another customer cancel, and he switched the 7/22 order in its place. To me this whole thing sounds rather fishy. How was this guy able to cut in front of me in line? Its nice for him, but not for the hundreds of other people who ordered before him.

Anyway, Kieth said there's a possibility that my unit is having its additional memory installed right now and that it may go out soon. If not, they are expecting another shipment from apple on Friday, but they are unsure of how many will be in it.

This thing is like a soap-opera - chock full of plot twists, suspense and suprises, but unfortunately without the gratuitous softcore love scenes.

As far as I know, Apple has not started the shipping process to any UK Reseller. When this is due to start is anyone's guess. My rep really seems to know nothing and has to keep giving ridiculus estimations based on adding a few weeks to the last deadline and hoping. I'm up to 6th September now.

Reaslistically I think Apple has to start shipping to UK dealers within the next couple of weeks. I would hope to have my Mac by the end of August as I ordered barely an hour after the announcment.

The problem is, what is a couple of weeks? September is only 12 days away (more or less), and then what, still another couple of weeks?

the waiting is becoming more difficult, and to be honest, my work suffers from it, I keep visiting these sites way too often :) So the sooner I have him, the sooner my productivity will go up again (won't use the mac for my work)

I called last night and spoke to a sales guy who suggested that I call back this morning and ask to speak to a product manager. I called a little while ago and asked for a product manager and the guy transferred me to someone. I guess there's a chance that he wasn't actually a product manager, but I didn't question him on it.

Wow. Is a bluetooth mouse and keyboard really worth waiting another 6 weeks? I'm sure your reseller will get your mac to you quicker than that.

Yes It is a long time to wait! I based my decision on a few things. Apple have changed their non BTO machines lea time to 3 weeks I recon production must be getting better, My reseller says my next deadline for delivery is in 3 weeks, (which matches the applestores estimate) yet with all the deadlines that have been missed I don't think it will be met. Given that I think the mac will not arrive, is there any option that is more appealing. I also think that when machines are short Apple will supply The Apple Store before resellers. so I can wait 3-? weeks for a standard mac or 4-? for a better one. The decision is yours! Also FC express is £130 off which I would have had to pay £200 and claim the £130 back from Apple (so my reseller says). I also get 10month interest free from apple. My reseller is very good. I just think apple will sell to applestore first. Time will tell.

Bad news is another pre-8-20 order slipped from 8-18 to 9-6 (GeckoHD). My heart goes out to you Gecko. That makes 3 orders that were pending before Aug 20 that have slipped.

Aside from that, the debate continues on whether ITSA in this post (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=991142#post991142) is blowing smoke up our butts with his announcement that MacMall has received their big 300+ order.

I actually gave some thought to posting this info because I knew it would cause a wide range of reactions.

I cannot prove the number of machine that MacMall received but I was told that it was around 200 (not 300+). It apparently took care of a large percentage of the existing backorders there.

Fedex says my box is now in town even though it was 2 day shipping. If it does not go out on the truck this morning I will have to go and get it since I cannot wait another day knowing it is so close.

I spoke with two people at the Online store today in the UK and the first hinted I might get mine before the estimated date of the 31st of August -- but the second rep said there is no way they are getting any 6800 cards in machines and out the door before the 31st of August.

I do not doubt that your machine shipped. I just find it frustrating that I ordered 6 weeks before you and you have your machine on the way and I do not. And we ordered from the same place. To me, that's not right - but I don't blame you for it. In a few weeks, we will all have our new machines and everyone will be happy.

That is reasonable. I almost did not post info about Keith because I was afraid some people would be angry and hassle him. So far so good...

From what I have heard, I suspect that your machine will ship shortly. Are you checking status online?

Here is a direct link - just put in your orderid and ship to zip code. It works for ClubMac orders too:
https://www.macmall.com/macmall/shop/tools/order_status/display_info.asp?OrderID=x12345&ShipTo_Zip=55555

I did get the free RAM deal - kinda hard to pass that one up. I am also going to add another 4GB since it will really help the speed for what I do. I often have hundreds of windows open at the same time.

I just don't understand why I can't find anyone else at MacMall willing to say that they received any more than a small handful of them. When I ordered mine on 7/22, the guy told me they had a little over 200 on backorder which suggests that they certainly had less than 200 on backorder way back on June 9th. If that was the case and they did receive a shipment of 200 recently, both DWKlink and the other guy I've been in contact with should've gotten a shipping confirmation since they both ordered on 6/9. This doesn't add up.

I can only offer a few temporal first impressions since I have yet to migrate my "old" computer. The 2.5 sucessfully passed the extended AHT. I was sweating during the logic board test and so it seemed did the computer. All fans were on full blast during the suite of tests and the super drive was wining like a jet taxing on the tarmac.

This computer is much quieter than my G4 but not silent. In a quiet room you know its on. I get fan rev-ups when even doing simple things like turning the visulizer on in iTunes. At the moment, I only have 512K RAM while awaiting another 1 GB from Crucial. Perhaps the machine is RAM starved and working harder. The Maxtor drive is reasonably quiet.

My machine does generate heat. Placing a hand near the exhaust fans in the back confirms that. Not hair dryer level but more like the basebord in central heating.

All in all, I am happy. I look forward to getting a firewire cable today, migrate my applications, install the RAM and see how it really performs.

I called MacConnection this morning to cancel my order. I encourage you all to keep calling local Apple stores. They seem to be getting "real" stock at the moment. I don't regret paying the sales tax and losing the RAM thing. It was one of those cupon rebate deals anyway and probably generic 4 x 256. I feel a lot more sane at this point and its hard to put a price on that! :D

One thing that may not be being taken into account - Keith is in corporate sales. You may have been getting info that does not include those orders.

At any rate, even though it seems like all of the shipping issues have more to do with voodoo than reality, I think all of these business are trying to do the best that they can.

I just had a long conversation with my rep at ClubMac. He said there is NO WAY that any units have shipped from ClubMac/MacMall yet. He said he is very confident that they will recieve an order of a little over 200 of them on friday. But until then, they have not seen one 2.5 there. He said he's worked there for 3 years and knows the company backwards and forwards.

I'm not sure what information you have received Roger, but after conveying the information that Keith told me, my rep said that what you were told is impossible.

If you wouldn't mind PM'ing me with your email address, I could pass it along to my rep so he can get more info on your order. But I truly don't understand how you could have already received a tracking number from FedEx.

To all of those early orderers from ClubMac and MacMall, hang in there - Friday should hopefully be the day for us too!

Yeah the guy i talked to told me stories of people going out and selling their current machines, expecting their G5's to ship on 7/30.

Poor souls.

Pfft, that's nothing. I sold mine in January expecting the new G5 at the end of that month.
:D

Man was I a fool. :o

If Apple keeps on doing this stuff, Powermac G5's are gonna end up like Ferrari's! : The second hand cars are more expensive than some new ones! Because if you order a new one, you have to wait a heck of a long time to get one..

Imagine this: Dual 2.5 on ebay: 3500 buck.. Dual 3.0, 2999 bucks..

Then maybe a Mac becomes a longtime investment, like paintings or expensive comics..

As someone once said to me "This blows Goats"

I just wish I had an alternative to a 2.5 G5 right now, but as I don't, I'll have to shut up and take it.

As someone said above, this crap is seriously impacting my productivity - which of course is my own fault for being so excitable - but it doesn't make it any easier to get on with work, when you know how much easier it will be when the G5 shows up.

MacNabitt, I wouldn't consider changing your order to be honest mate. I was actually watching your order as on all the lists you are the UK order before mine (15/6) and I haven't had any indication that my online Apple Store order will ship anytime soon either, so I wouldn't jump reseller ship just yet.

Grass always greener etc...

With respect to you, the person who says it is not possible does not know what he is talking about. My G5 is on the truck and out for delivery. Their official line is that they will be shipping a bunch within the next week. However they have shipped quite a few as evidenced by the change in the total number of backorders.

If he thinks it is impossible that they have shipped any, I would change reps for future orders. It is not only possible but a certainly.

Again, no disrespect to you. You are just going by what you are being told.

It looks like the pic I should post needs to be of the MacMall/ClubMac etc. shipping label.

Otherwise I have no way to know who to believe.

Either way, good luck with your machine, and I do hope you receive it soon.

Why not put an end to it and send a PM to either DWKlink or myself with your email address or better yet, your order #. That would conclusively prove or disprove this once and for all. If Keith is on the money, I'll be happy to eat crow and be the first to congratulate you on your shiny new G5.

I am going to pass on providing my order info because I can only see bad things good coming out of it. Please understand that I do not want to do anything to burn any bridges for the future. I posted the info about using a specific rep because he has always gotten great results for me and my clients and others might want to use him. For example, if someone just placed an Apple Store order with a 6 week estimate, I would consider placing another order with Keith and taking the first one available. I have no doubt that MacMall will be filling orders much faster than that.

Here is my latest tracking info:

As I think I said a while back - they are being shipped from their warehouse in Memphis. Not from California.

The San Francisco Apple store called me about 15 min. ago. I had been on a waiting list for a G5 2.5. I was informed they received stock today. How many and who's on the waiting list besides me, I don't know.

I drove all the way to Walnut Creek last night and got one there. Could have saved some gas and basked in the ambiance of the SF store which puts the others to shame. Oh well, I don't have a crystal ball.

Hope this helps someone out there.

Hmm.. SF store has 2.5s. I'm in SF. Should I pay $350+ extra and buy it in the store, or should I wait awhile and get it at discount?

The problem is I have no idea when CDW/MacWherehouse is actually going to ship. I was told they *think* end of august. I could get it 2-2 weeks earlier for $350.. Ohhh agonizing decisions.

I spoke with two people at the Online store today in the UK and the first hinted I might get mine before the estimated date of the 31st of August -- but the second rep said there is no way they are getting any 6800 cards in machines and out the door before the 31st of August.

Problem being I'm going on holiday on the 31st

I am tempted to cancel right at the last minute. That'll show 'em!

While you are on the phone the 2.5's could sell out again. The best advice would be to show up at the store. It just makes sense that they will sell to someone that is in store. When the 1.8 arrived a customer talked to a staff person and another went directly to the back and he purchased the remaining 1.8.

Well, until this AM I was a switcher "in-progress" ... I had originally planned on picking up a DP 2.5 at a retail store, then pulled the trigger on an online order on 8/12. I have read every message on this thread and I slowly came to the realization that my 9/21 delivery date may well slip well into October. So, this AM, while in the process of driving home from vacation I played a hunch and called an Apple Store in the next city on I-95 (Richmond, VA) ..turns out they had taken delivery of their first 2 Dual 2.5s only 1/2 hour before my call. I'm now the proud owner of one of them and a 23" monitor (plus Apple Care). Thanks to all for the informative thread and hang in there! Best regards from a new switcher, JT

My girlfriend just got hers today at the Dallas store and they only got in three of them. Houston got in only two a couple of weeks ago and it looks like Austin only received two as well, so while they are starting to show up at Apple Stores, it appears that they're only coming in literally less than a handful at a time.

Many thanks to this list. As a result of the heads-up I got from you, I called my reseller, Tekserve, and they admitted they screwed up and I somehow slipped from their list ( 6/28-stock order, paid in full and charged to my card ) They messengered my G5 this afternoon, and I am putting it in my car tonight, unopened, to take it to its setup location.

First, I want to thank all of you for helping me get through this very tough ordeal, it was very nice to know that I wasn't the only one. I think that this board has gotten more time than my girlfriend in the past month or so. Anyways this morning I proceeded to call the Apple stores at 9:00am to see if any had arrived and after being told that they wouldn't get them till the end of the month I almost gave up. Then I heard that the Santa Clara store got 5 in and figured if they had 5, San Francisco has to have some, so I went to the store and stood there till they brought one up. It is amazing how no one in the stores know what they have. Had I not told them I was positive they had one and forced them to go and look I stil lwould be waiting. Well I now have her and must say, so far so good. The coolness is amazing it is cooler than my Air Conditioner. I will upodate more once I really get it up and going.

If Apple bumps back again, they have to give a discount...or an ipod...or something...right? Not much happening on the spreadsheet (http://www.solo-act.com/documents/masterorderlist.xls), but lots happening elsewhere.

Wednesday 8-18 passed with only ONE order outside the USA getting shipped, and 3 orders (1Holland 2UK) actually SLIPPING.

3 USA Forum members have cancelled their orders and driven down to local Apple retail stores to pick up shiny new stock 2.5's while others remain wringing their wrists in frustration ready to riot if Apple stores actually RE-STOCK before they can receive their own "pre-order" (what IS a pre-order anyway?).

There are 2 stores in Denver, one had a handful come in today that were already spoken for. The "floor guy" there told me Apple is sending out a trickle to as many stores as possible, then shipping to the "pre-order" people, then sending out a second larger shipment to the Apple retail stores again.

The main good news I can pull from this is.....there are a lot of machines going out. Probably not hundreds, but a "mass simultaneous shipment" to multiple destinations in the USA has kicked into gear since Monday and machines are arriving. Just reading this forum I've learned that 10 US Apple retail stores have received machines in the last 48 hours. The second shipment will be much larger, and the third will probably actually generate a "now shipping" tag on the Dual 2.5 machines on the Apple site.

THE BIG QUESTION NOW in the next 24-36 hours is..... if Apple stores are getting initial handfuls.....are the "pre-orders" (all of us) next before the stores restock? Or will they restock before our orders are taken care of?

Even though I predicted a slip in shipping dates last week, I'm hoping with all the machines now moving, that there are indeed enough chips to fill a massive second wave of machines that need to go out.

The next 36 hours should be anything but boring............

Man I can't believe Apple Retail Stores are selling G5 2.5's to anyone who walks in and we're stuck waiting for over 2 months for our orders. I called Apple today and all they say is the stupid same stuff and of cours e the woman had the gall to say that if an Apple Retail Store orders before me they're order gets filled first (no matter if it's for 1 G5 or 1000). So Apple could ship thousands of G5 2.5's to their Apple Stores and leave us all out in the lurch. Nice. I'm tempted to look up an old old aquaintance in Boston in the US and see if he can purchase me one. This has got to be really stupid. Just think of all the extra cost of having those online orders cancelled for Apple Retail sales. Looks to me like Apple is trying to justify their retail stores.

Frankly, after my call to Apple Sales Support today I have little confidence in Apple meeting the 8/20/2004 date.

Apple should really considering replacing their sales staff with a voice recording... they say the same thing over and over and over... like a broken record, and offer no more info than the Online Order Status page. You could always phone a retail store to order by phone.

Well - I promised pictures and a quick review so here it goes. The pics can be found here - http://homepage.mac.com/tjpigot/G5arrival/PhotoAlbum32.html

As for the review- I've not had much time with my G5 because I work stupid hours but here is how its gone so far.

Arrived Monday the 16th as expected (oredered June 11th from online apple store). As you can see from the pics, the box was in good shape and all pieces were intact. I installed an airport extreme card right away which was a little trickier than I expected. It goes into a metal guide which is a really tight fit before being seated. Took a few minutes to get the darn thing in there but it seated nicely and I connected the cable.

I booted it up and initiated the file transfer. My G4 has 2 hard drives and for whatever reason, my boot drive is on the slave drive. I'm not sure why but the transfer program only picked up the master drive which had my OS9 partition so I transferred that stuff but needed to move the osX programs over seperately.

Upon restarting the machine, I needed to associate with my network and for whatever reason, the aiprort monitor did not register a signal despite having a clear one. Turning my airport card on and off fixed that. I then proceeded to download updates. After the first batch of updates the system needed to restart. Upon restarting my system unfortunately froze but booted up fine after a restart. Finished downloading updates and has not frozen since.

I don't have any specific performance numbers but I will say that everything works so much faster on this thing. Subjectively I would say that things work 2-3X faster compared with my dual 533.

Games have been running well (Diablo 2, Dungeon Siege, Halo, and Warcraft III but I've not spent any significant time with them.

Anyway - that's about it - enjoy the pics and here's to hoping that all of your G5's ship tomorrow!

Mine did in fact arrive this afternoon and I have been transferring everything from my Powerbook. Unfortunately I forgot to turn off the menu display for the battery and Airport. Now I have to locate the pref that is keeping hem there on the G5.

It was not an empty box nor a dual 2.0... :)

Only 1 problem so far - the superdrive would not open. It was misaligned and pressing the front of the drive case down from the inside solved the problem.

The extended hardware test found no problems.

Here is a pic of the box with the Apple label, MacMall labels, packing list, etc.

I too canceled my order today and went to the Apple store in MN and picked one up. They had two and I put my name on there list long ago as a back up. No built in bluetooth but my dongle is working fine from the usb hub. Its fast! I will get picks up soon. I will be modifying my blutooth keybord to "fit" under the alum. 23" display, I think some of you might like it. Thanks for all the fun and nail bitting the last TWO MONTHS!

Good Luck.

Finally got mine; :) had ordered one on the Apple website, but the waiting was killing me; so i called up my local apple store today and they had 6 in stock; somehow, i was able to get my hands on one with the 23" display; they are installing an airport extreme card, and i will pick it up on Friday. More feedback to follow then.

I bought a STOCK 2.5 today from the Dallas Apple store. I had asked to be put on a waiting list a few weeks ago. I guess I was at the top because they only received 3 and I got one of them. They called me around lunch and I was there shortly there after. I haven't had time to play with all the goodies yet, but I'm sending a pic of the radiator and my final set up with 23" monitor. I did add the 74GB Raptor drive for my boot drive. I plan to buy more RAM as soon as I recover from the $5,000 I just spent this week.

Hello All,

Been watching this thread since it's inception and it's been entertaining to say the least. This is my first post here at Macrumors.

I ordered 7/9 over the phone.

I ordered a 2.5 dp, 1Gb ram, 250Gb HD, BT, 6800 Ultra along with a 30 incher.

I have a hold on my CC for the G5 - this makes me hopeful, but who knows.

I could use it for work, but it's such advanced technology, and given Apple's past, I wasn't hoping for the orginal 7/29 shipping. It now sits at 8/31, but I am not holding my breath. The pics I have seen on this thread are neato. Can't wait to unveil mine.

For all those considering canceling their orders, please don't - unless you can get one at a retail location. Just remember that we are looking at a matter of days...

I hope you all get your dream machines soon.

Here is a pic of the box with the Apple label, MacMall labels, packing list, etc.
http://www.centralpets.com/g5_box.jpg

I hope that clears up questions from the non-believers...

-Roger

First of all, congrats on receiving your G5. I certainly look forward to hearing someone say that to me!

I don't think the issue was whether yours actually shipped, but why it shipped before others who ordered over a month earlier and to get to the bottom of why everyone is getting different information from MacMall. Don't get me wrong, I'm not faulting you for being on the receiving end of an early shipment. I'd just like to get some accurate information regarding my order and if I can, avoid being strung along for weeks if it ends up being one delay after another. That being said, I'm still trying to be optimistic about a large shipment arriving on Friday.

Crucial definitely at the top, OWC seems a little higher priced for me (especially when they're less than forthcoming about the chips they use), Kingston is more of a hit-or-miss proposition at this point, and I have a soft spot for Corsair and/or Mushkin myself, but that's just a personal preference. When in doubt, you can never go wrong with Crucial.

I will keep doing this till they get their facts right...

I phoned apple again today to find out where my machine is. First person I speak to gives me tracking numbers saying it's with TNT.

Check with TNT , the tracking numbers are for Cork to Venray leg of this saga , and they have no record of picking up my orders from Venra.

So I phone apple back and are told that my machine is still in Venray and they have no idea when it's going to ship. So I bitched on about the after they charged my Credit Card 3 days ago , and have had the machine in Venray for 4 days and have done nothing with it (seemingly).

The guy on the phone said there were a large backlog of orders at Venray, but he would expedite the machine for shipment.

Well , if no new tracking numbers turn up in the next 24hrs , it's going to be back on the phone again.

I've now actually started considering becoming a 'switcher' , you don't have this much trouble ordering from DELL.

Very Very angry..

I've always had good luck with memory from Ramjet (http://www.ramjet.com). The memory's always been of good quality and has a lifetime warranty against defects and firmware updates. Plus they come with ram heat sinks. That alone is worth it. ;)

Hi there

I thought I'd call a couple of UK resellers to find out what they're expecting in the way of shipments. MicroAnvika said they're not expecting anything until the 1st week in September, Computer Warehouse said the END of September!

The guy at CW also suggested that I avoid the 2.5GHz machines for proffessional work, saying that he'd heard stories of the liquid cooling system wiping out Firewire. He then went on to do a hard sell on the 2.0s, which makes me think he just wanted my business sooner.

Anyone with 2.5s had any problems with Firewire reliability?

What a load of ****. Sure, the liquid cooling system could malfunction in some machines, but that has totally nothing todo with firewire. If it would malfunction, the processors would just burn up, and true, your firewire wouldn't work anymore either :D

I can't believe I'm the only person to receive my G5 in the UK but I suppose it's possible. I phoned Apple a few days prior to the original 02/08/04 deadline to explain that I had a buyer for my G4 1.25 DP but that he had to buy before the end of July for tax reasons. Asking (politely!) if the deadline was going to be met, I was told that no further details were available but I was also advised that they would make an urgent note on my file. As we all know, the deadline came and went, so did my buyer's and I still have my G4.

In view of the above and the fact that only one other machine has been reported in the UK, I feel I may have inadvertantly become a special case and received my G5 earlier than I should. If this is the case, then my shipment probably won't count towards Apple's official figures and by giving out my order number, I could possibly get the guy at Apple who helped me into trouble. I'd also rather not have my account flagged to the effect that I'm not to be helped in future!

I do sympathise but I hope you understand and I'm sure that your G5s will be with you as soon as Apple can get them out the door. I know it's easy for me to say, but hang in there, all of you! It's worth the wait and it won't be long now.

I was just looking in the tech specs on the Apple site, and I can't find what the power consumption is on a new dual 2.5 - anybody know? - particularly with a 9800XT card, as I need to buy a UPS, and need to get the specs right!

Ok how about this. What about if you email a screen grab of your shipping notice and blur/block out any order number, email address, or contact details. I really need to send some concrete proof to my Reseller as I get the impression he thinks I'm lying.

Would this be possible?

"Notice to customers waiting for G5 2.5 machines:

Notice will officially be given tomorrow by Apple that custom G5 2.5 models,
or "CTO" builds in jargonese, are starting to ship. Apple will ship these
customised versions first, and they will "jump the queue" on the standard
M9457BA configs. Typically the delivery takes 4-7 days to arrive, depending
on its route into the UK.

They are unable to confirm how quickly they will get through the backlog,
nor to tell us how many CTO models will need to go out before M9457BA
appears. However, a shipping notice is always good news - at least the
machine really does exist!

Thanks for your patience everyone.

So it seems that CTO orders are going to be shipped before stock orders. Just quickly updated my order to have a bigger harddrive to make it a CTO.

Why do things have to be so complicated?

You think this would accomplish the job?

http://www.buy.com/retail/product_jump.asp?sku=10346094&SearchEngine=Froogle&SearchTerm=10346094&Type=PE&Category=Comp&dcaid=17379

2.5G5 & 23" Cinema HD Display <= 600W

Give you a good 7 minutes to save your work and shut down.

Edit: Now that I think about it, it would probably make most sense to just get one that fulfills the "Fully Loaded Max"

http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10346095&loc=101&sp=1

That should power a "Fully Loaded" G5 and a Cinema Display for about 6 minutes.

Any Suggestions?

I've always had good luck with memory from Ramjet (http://www.ramjet.com). The memory's always been of good quality and has a lifetime warranty against defects and firmware updates. Plus they come with ram heat sinks. That alone is worth it. ;)

I ordered 2 gigs from them (2x1gig) for $500. A lot cheeper then it was from apple. Only problem is the ram came in a month ago and is sitting useless on my desk. :(

If my G5 eventually gets here, which of these two would people recommend. I've been expecting to buy Crucial, but Ramjet sounds good, cheap, and what's with this RAM heatsink??

I have a Dual 2.5 GHz G5 with 2GB RAM (4x512), 300GB and 250GB internal S-ATA HDDs, and Radeon 9800XT. It, along with my 21" Dell FP2000 LCD display and some miscellaneous USB stuff, is on my APC SmartUPS 1000. This all uses about 42% of the UPS capacity when the Mac is doing normal stuff, and about 60% of the UPS when gaming or otherwise really stressing the machine.

Well, I'm completely satisfied about the display! No dead or stuck pixels at all!, no color issues at all! I even was able to do a colorcalibration with a Lacie-Blue-Eye, Normally it's a hardware calibrator for CRT and a software calibrator for LCD, BUT it's only for Lacie displays! But I gave it a try anyway, and it's just perfect! The color is brilliant and it makes a colorprofile in the colorsettings. It just Works..

Because I do a lot of printwork for all kinds of stuff, I really need the coloraccuracy. My dad was always very very skeptical about LCD, but now after he had seen this, he is all happy about it! (I think he wants one too ;) )

But I don't know offcourse.. Maybe it's a fault in the 9600 XT cards that make the reddish tint that people are complaining about?

Can't say anything about Ramjet, since I've never even heard of them before now, but as for the RAM heatsink, there's IMHO no real benefit from the heatsink. Theoretically it prevents the RAM from overheating, but seriously, when was the last time you heard of a stick of RAM overheating and burning out? Especially when you can't overclock it very easily in a Mac. I have been known to buy heatsinked RAM or install them myself, but only because it looks cool in certain computers with their sides off  . Other than that, not much reason to put a premium on heatsinked RAM.

• So far, no non-6800 orders in the USA have slipped past 8-20 today

• 48 total "on or before" Aug 20 have not updated or remain unchanged (I'm still @ 8-20).

Hoping for lots of news today, its do or die for shipping by tomorrow with 49 orders to go in a little over 24 hours. I'm still thinking my order will slip beyond 8-20, but I'd like to believe otherwise.

Maybe it's a fault in the 9600 XT cards that make the reddish tint that people are complaining about?
Ge4-ce, the color of my 23 Cinema Display is also brilliant, but when I first connected the display to my PowerBook Titanium 867 MHz the Finder windows (especially the brushed aluminium surface) looked a bit pink. So it is not a problem of the 9600 XT.
I created a display color profile on my own (using the system preferences calibration) and now it's almost perfect.

Try the following with your display: Open iTunes and now move the iTunes window to the left and to the right. Watch the white and grey/blue stripes in the title window... On the left side of my display the white and grey/blue stripes are a bit less clearly visible than in the middle or on the right side. Can you confirm that? Nevertheless I can really recommend the new CinemaDisplays.

I got an APC Back-UPS 1500 for a PC last year. When I sold it, the G5 inheritted it. Although it is the bland off-white colour, it still looks very cool positioned vertically alongside the G5.

A question about the power supply of the G5. I read the technical doc regarding power consumption. It says idle is 120W, Max is 406W and a fully loaded G5 with all slots filled is 604W. This sounds exciting to hear about the power supply that they put in those machines. I do assemble PCs and you have to choose on the power supply that corresponds to your requirement. In this case, I'm thinking how much watts can the G5 take and how much really did they put in there? Obviously there has to be more than 600W. But I've never heard of a 700W power supply, too.

Finally lost my patience and called Apple about a half hour ago. Was told the partyline: that my order is still on schedule to ship tomorrow (he did add quickly: "subject to change"...), but all indications are that it will ship tomorrow. I told him that 3 weeks ago I received my delay e-mail the day before my order was supposed to ship, and wondered whether that's going to happen again. The guy I spoke with, Dave, was somewhat sympathetic given that I've been waiting since June, but offered no explanations for the delay, nor any shipping guarantees.

Is is even possible, however unlikely, that all the "on or before Aug. 20" orders WILL ship tomorrow? This much silence this late in the game is VERY bad. I predicted a slip on the 8-20 orders over a week ago based on the accumulated shipping activity I had at the time, and so far today the continued lack of activity is building a case for another slip in shipping dates.

It is possible that whatever plants they're being built at, the supervisors are getting their "ducks in a row" counting the # of machines with specific add ons that are built and ready alongside stock machines, and correlating that info with pre-orders.....After all the data is in, they could send out a mass email all at once to everyone who is about to get a machine shipped. Thats the mass email we've all been waiting for and here in the middle of the day on 8-19 it has yet to happen.

However, people have been stepping into the forum with isolated reports of individual emails.

At this point, with each hour that passes, we're getting closer & closer to a mass email that will be bringing very good, or very bad news.

I'm going to eat lunch (& watch the minutes tick my on the clock).

If mine doesn't ship tomorrow then I won't be so much annoyed that I have to keep waiting, but, because they've sent 2 reassuring emails informing me that my order was on schedule in the past week.

My hope is that we get a whole slew of confirmations before the 3,000th post. It would be nice if #3,000 was someone excited about their new G5, not someone complaining the date has slipped again.

Apple sent you e-mails? Or are you talking about a reseller.

I haven't gotten any activity since the last e-mail delaying the ship date to 8/20. No credit card activity at all either. So depressing.

The Apple store is right across the street from my office in San Francisco. I have been so patient. But if I would have put my name on their list 2 weeks ago, I would have a machine. I know that they will be sending bad news. I am trying to be optimistic, but even solo's enthusiasm is waning :)

I keep watching the pot waiting for the water to boil!

Well 3 weeks ago, I received the dreaded "delay" e-mail from Apple around 4:30est the day before my order was supposed to ship.

So if our shipping dates are indeed going to slip again, can we expect the dreaded e-mails to come around the same time today?

I'm hoping to pass the rest of the day without seeing another "delay of shipment" e-mail from Apple...

Just got off the phone with Apple. Accordingly, Apple is watching this thread with interest, as the person who gets the 3000th post gets their 2.5DP first.

Yep, that's why today is even more important than tomorrow: if something goes wrong, we'll know today.

I can't afford to wait another 3 weeks.

My "Dreaded" e-mail arrived at 1:19pm PST, but they did change my Order Status that morning around 11am. I have check the Order Status every hour, and it still says 8/20. But there has been no activity on my credit card.

This is like waiting for the baby to be delivered!

Dude, I'll take that G3 off your hands... i'll pay for shipping too... heck, i'll even buy it from you... assuming it works.

Thanks for the offer, but I'll probably be keeping FrankenMac around for a while as a backup or file server. Next year I plan on giving it to my mother to replace her Umax C600 (running OS 9.1).

I've upgraded FrankenMac as much as possible: G4/500 processor, ATI Radeon 7000 PCI Card, ATA/133 PCI Card, 80GB HD, 100GB HD, DVD-ROM, Firewire PCI Card (onboard PCI is flaky), and 768MB RAM.

Having a 2.5GHz G5 is going to be so sweet!! Come on, Apple! Send me my new computer!!!

Apple Europe sent me 2 emails telling me that my order was on schedule for 20/8, I don't know if anyone in the US got the same email, in fact I've not heard of anyone in europe getting the same email. So I don't know whether it was a select group or just a blanket email. But, I've not had any activity either so those emails may mean nothing.

I really hope they make the current delayed shipping dates.....this whole experience is driving me nuts~!!!!!!!!!!!

Ordered mine from Apple UK on 06/30 with delivery on 08/13. Called Apple rep. on 08/13 and was told that my G5 was ready to ship from Cork to Holland. Called 08/16 and was told that shipping had slipped to 09/03 : No reason  If the 08/20 orders go through then there is a chance I'll get mine shipped by 09/03. Otherwise it gonna be another delay..............and I am prepared to wait as long as the next person but Apple really needs to start giving good reasons for the delays and managing their customers expectations a lot better............sorry for the rant.....feel a little better now.

Its european style (actually most of the world except america i believe) to list day then month.

it actually makes the most chronological sense as well - day, then month, then year. but then again, metric makes a hell of a lot more sense too...

Anyone in Canada received a 2.5DP yet?

Sleepless in Canada... :(

My order status still says 'on or before 8/20/2004' and I've received no emails from Apple.

As far as I know, no Canadians have received any orders yet. And like I said in my previous post, I phoned Apple yesterday and got the same old broken record message. I'm starting to think I should phone the Canadian MacWarehouse to see if they were smart enough to put an order in real early, but I doubt they've received any G5 DP 2.5's.

The day I see that order status change or receive a shipping notice from Apple, I'll be in shock!!

Actually YYYY-MM-DD would make the most sense, that way if you named a bunch of files that way, they'd be in order by date.

Yes, I knew about the european date thing, I guess they don't have jokes in europe ? :D

Ulf

Yes uelef, I can confirm that. But it's really hard to notice, and I think it also has a little bit to do whith the viewing angle. Or if not, it only occures the first 5 percent on the left! and so NOT noticable.. You really have to look for it.. I moved around the itunes window 10 times and really gaze to see what you meant..

It's a cool display..

Just got off the phone with MacMall. The latest update is that they say they have a shipment of 51 in transit from Apple which will arrive on Monday, the 23rd. This is fairly good news if you ordered early. He could not give me specifics of when the next shipment would arrive or how many it would be. All he could say is that it should be within a week to a week and a half. Ugh! He also mentioned that they now have about 400 on backorder. I ordered on 7/22 when there were about 200 so it looks like I'll be waiting a bit longer.

I've been watching the thread with interest and I've just got some info that may be useful to others.

My order went into cdw/macwarehouse 6/11 through our corporate account, just got word that they had 300 on back order and just started receiving them yesterday and 15 have shipped. These are only the stock models. My CTO is "hopefully next week" - we'll see.

Got off the phone with apple just little while ago, I had the woman I got check with her supervisor or someone to see if there were any supply issues with the 6800's, and she said there were not.

She also told me that about 50% of the G5 2.5 Orders are set to ship out tomorrow.

I hope the 6800's ship tomorrow.

Edit: woa... 3000th Post...
