I have never jailbroken before. Is it as simple as just restoring to this firmware???

Yes. Put it into DFU mode first and it will be fine. :)

thank you for the reply. I can't just restore from itunes? I assume if I use this cooked firmware I dont need to use the Pwnage 3.1.3 tool?

How can we know how this was built. i.e. for ATT Carrier, what cydia packages loaded etc. Seems like a very risky way for us PC users to update our jb's.

Yes that is what I meant. DFU mode + restore in iTunes.

User needs to know if it is hacktivated, has pwned before been selected yes or no.

Better to reach out to a friend with a Mac and get it done correctly for sure.

Good point....but what other choice do Windows users have? Perhaps I need to create a post asking for some kind, trustworthy MAC user to post the firmware????

It would be great if a trusted contributor on this forum was willing to share a clean custom ipsw file for us with details as to what options were used in PT and what packages were loaded.

My gf has a MB Pro, so I may go over to her place and build a custom ipsw myself even though my past JB's have been with quickpwn, purplera1n, and redsn0w. I'm a little skeered ;)

It's easy, just get a tutorial

Keep the package as simple as possible, Cydia and maybe OpenSSH and nothing else (uncheck Icy)

AT&T or other official sim, uncheck activate phone, other un-official sim, activate phone

Select no to has it been pwned before.

Throw it on a thumb drive and use iTunes to install

Make sure and open Cydia right after JB and let it update and re-organize and optimize its self.

Thanks DHLizard! That makes it sound very straightforward. I'm assuming I can use the 3.1 ipsw that Apple so graciously gave me when I selected download but don't install option a couple of days ago.

One shot of tequila and I think I could pull this off!

Would you suggest to restore as new as well?

Thanks for trying to instill confidence!

If your iPhone has been JB before, yes, select set up as new.

If never JB, I can't see where it matters.

Also, yes, point PT at the official Apple 3.1 IPSW

Another caution, make sure you shift/click in iTunes (think that's it for PC) and choose the custom IPSW not the official Apple IPSW

Thanks to everyone that helped making this possible for us PC guys! dhlizard and the megaupload link provider, I owe you a beer if we ever cross paths.

3G[s] up and running on pwned 3.1. Right now I'm adding all my itunes music back, but all Cydia apps are up and running.

Only thing I couldn't find was WB Settings from David Ashman. I added his repository but couldn't find this. Anyone find it in another repo??

When I try loading the "cooked" software into my 3.01 JB'd 3GS I get the message: "Can't restore, an Unknown error occurred (1600)'." Running Windows 7 + iTunes 9.01.

Any suggestions ?

Have you tried both DFU and restore mode?

I only tried DFU (because that was what the "instructions" said. :) )

I have tried 4 different USB ports and 2 different cables. I'll try restore mode next. Thanks.

Restore mode seems to have done it. All that time I wasted! :) Thanks!

It sucks I hope someone (maybe the dev team has a change a heart) and comes up with a way for use 3G and 3GS users on Windows who are currently on 3.1 to be able to jailbreak the device. I don't want to unlock it for use on t-mobile etc. I just want cydia back...

It doesn't have anything to do with a change of heart. The Mac tools always come first from the DevTeam.

They say their next project is to figure out how to JB a phone on official 3.1 Apple firmware. Hopefully it will come quickly as many poster either updated to 3.1 or got 3.1 OOTB.

Can't say if it will be another version of PT or redsn0w however.

Certainly you have a friend with a Mac ?? (not meant to be snarky )
