has anyone tried if tethering still works under the official carrier update or should I stick around with the 5.5 carrier file or maybe the 6.0 Stealth file?

This is the only reason I am waiting to upgrade to a jailbroken 3.1 I want to make sure I can still tether. Can any confirm that they were able to get tethering working on a 3GS with 3.1 software? If so, please do tell how you did it. Thanks

so far everyone i know has had the tether hack disabled when updated to 3.1

Yeah official tethering, including using the mywi app, doesn't work with 3.1... I'm trying to find out if PDANet works on 3.1... anyone know?

I tested pdanet over usb (didn't test the wifi) and it worked on 3.1 jb 3Gs.

anyone know how to tether on 3.1 with mac via usb? The only solution i found is pdanet but that is only for windows/usb.

You can get the pdanet beta client for OS X. But that requires also getting the pdanet beta for the iphone. You have to manually put the app on the phone via SCP, etc. I don't feel like going through the trouble so i'll just wait until it's a release. But follow pdanetbeta on twitter for more info.

Thanks for the info. I dont want to mess around with SSH. I will wait for the official release. Is the speed on pdanet via usb as fast as the built in tethering on 3.0? Wifi speed on pdanet is way slower now than when i was using usb tethering

that's great news about PdaNet still working. I'm pretty disappointed about the built in tethering not working though. I tried both PdaNet and the tethering hack when I got my 3GS, and I felt like the built in tethering was more stable than PdaNet. I don't think it was just an Apple Placebo either.

In any case, if my iPhone gets screwed up and I have to restore, at least I can live with the comfort knowing that I do have an option if I have to move up to 3.1.

For heaven's sake ... it's T-E-T-H-E-R NOT TEATHER! When you make fun of a girl you TEATHER when you tie a rope to her arm you TETHER.

hmmm...I always wondered why I never made it to the spelling bee growing up....

It was a careless typo...

Although the native tether does not work I also can confirm that PdaNet works great.
