I agree it was missing that "Something", but that's how a lot of series started out. Star Trek TNG was the same, the characters were almost like puppets until the second season.
I thought it was an odd beginning to a series, they moved the initial plot along very quickly. There was no time to really get a feel for any of the characters. A lot of the plot elements were already done elsewhere, its hard to be original these days.
I'm struggling with the hacker kid, I just don't know where his character is going. Thank God they killed the Senator off in the pilot, he was really getting annoying, but Christopher McDonald is great in those roles.
I felt the same way about the terminator series, and just when the writers started to hit a stride and get creative, they pulled the plug on the show. I guess we should be happy Syfy is running this.
I DVR'd the thing and watched it with my 10 year old son. All of the sudden they move to this pointless sex scene in the store room. Yep, this isn't Star Trek, sorry bud! LOL

It's starting to move along but it does feel like it's missing something. At least we aren't supplied a generic adversary this time. Not that I had a problem with the system lords the first time around.
I watched the most recent episodes just to get in on the BAD END(S) I'm anticipating.

I think Robert Carlyle is a great actor, and surprising to see that he's on a basic cable space opera. I'll stick around for several episodes for sure. Having said that, it seems like they'll be pushing similar plot lines to Battlestar Galactica -- starship trying to find its way home, being chased by an implacable enemy ...
I bet a great ending would be for two angels to debate the remains of a 150,000 fossil ...

Man, that Air Force tiger stripe camo looks even goofier when it's worn on screen by an actor. First time I saw USAF personnel wearing that, I was thinking, man, you can't be serious.

Just saw the episode (3?) where they landed on the planet to get the much needed (whatever) for their carbon dioxide scrubbers.
Again, it spent way too much time walking through the desert, and the small rebellion that gated to where ever was barely mentioned when they got back, it was like "Oh well, see ya, wouldn't wanna be ya".
No really likeable characters have emerged yet... Seems like they are rushing through the setup to get to the main plotline. If the point is to get home, it's too much like Star Trek Voyager...

That's why some people are calling it "Stargate: Voyager". :)
We won't get this new Stargate show down here in New Zealand for a while. They've started playing promo adverts, so we're getting the next (last?) season of Stargate: Atlantis soon ... at least it's on the one network that plays such shows in a sensible timeslot!

Not just that but the whole style of the show (documentary-like cameras with graininess and such) is a lot like BSG. It was obvious to me from the very first time I heard about SGU that they were going to try to appeal to the BSG audience. And I've always wanted a more serious/adult Stargate (and yes, would love the same for Star Trek - the potential is there!). So I'm definitely going to try to watch it for a time.
I think it may feel lacking "something" in that so far it's emulating stuff from other popular dramas and doesn't have its own style down yet. Will take some time like many series do. As another poster mentioned, early episodes of TNG are weird compared to most of the show. Data especially is fairly creepy.

Then it wouldn't be "Stargate" in anything but name ... just like all the other idiotic "remakes" / "updates" / "reboots" coming out of Hollyweird these days.
If they want to make a different show, they should make a different show, including a new name. They shouldn't ruin established franchises by trying to completely change them ... the fans LIKE the franchise the way it is, that's why they're called "fans".

I finally got around to watching the first three episodes, and am completely hooked already. Yay for Eli!
I am not a habitual Stargate watcher, basically because I always seemed to be watching the episodes that were all flashback, dragged terribly, and were difficult to watch if you hadn't been watching the whole time. And with the sheer number of episodes of all of the Stargate flavors, it is impossible to actually catch up. I gave up, and now just watch the occasional episode with my son.
This one has the grittiness that was present in BSG, and the music is very similar as well. The way to best describe it is BSG crossed with Firefly, set in Stargate space. And it has the potential to be very, very good, if it doesn't get cancelled after one season.

Hey, if you like the originals so much, go watch reruns.
People have been telling variations of the same stories set in the same universe with common themes since different versions of Gilgamesh in the bronze ages. Every old myth and every story worth telling has different versions.

Yes, and those retellers who had more than a single braincell changed the name of their version along with all the other changes they made. The problem is that most of the current generation in Hollyweird are brainless and talentless hacks simply interested in shovelling more and more money into their own pockets. :(

No, they didn't. There's at least 3 written versions of Gilgamesh with the same characters. Every pantheistic mythology has multiple, conflicting stories involving the same characters.

I meant retellers in general, not necessarily for the Gilgamesh story (which I've never read).
The idiots who reuse the same name destroy the franchise's continuity ... nobody any longer has any idea what the "real" story is for "franchises" like King Arthur, Robin Hood, or even Superman thanks the fools constantly altering them over the years. :(

I keep trying to tell you, for stuff like King Arthur and Robin Hood - myth and folklore, there IS no original story. There IS no absolute canon. One story is just as valid as another because no one person owns it. They're communally owned. Superman is almost at that point as well.

Wow, nice to see this thread coming along - hard to talk about it at Gate World - too many I guess.
I starting to agree with "Stargate: Voyager" but it's at least new Stargate episodes. I'm a fan of Stargate since the original movie in the theater.
AFA the whole sex stuff - well there was nudity in the original Pilot, and I am going through SG-1 again and I just watched "Brief Candle" (S1E9) and they showed Jack after partaking of the "Marriage Cake".... ;)
I guess since it was on Showtime it had to have a little bit of raunch - which is why they moved it to SciFi to be more family friendly.
Yes, it was kinda wierd seeing it in SGU, but really nothing more than what was on SG-1 on Showtime...

There was an original story. Whether it was true or not, whether anyone now knows what it is or not (thanks to morons keep chaging it) is completely irrelevant, and largely proves the point that making such changes simply creates a complete mess of the "franchise", as well as smacking original fans in the face as no longer "good enough".

Actually, no, there's not. Most old stories that were written down in one form or another were synthesis of many stories or aspects of many characters. Such is the nature of folklore, mythology and storytelling.

Well I haven't seen the episode yet but that was pretty obvious. :D The show really isn't too great so far (predictable and a little bland, or too much imitation of BSG - seriously who is out there taking those shaky-cam shots of the Destiny anyway? Just gimme some nice steady panoramas), but I'll keep watching it anyway.

SG•U will not survive the first season -- or even half of it -- if it doesn't pick up and get a lot better. SG-1 and SG-A had much better beginnings. With both I was hooked right away. With SG•U it's becoming more of a chore to pick it from my list of recordings from the DVR. I do it more out of loyalty to the series, with the hope it will be good. But at least it doesn't have Amanda Tappings's annoyingly bad fake English accent.

I can't help but think they're trying to copy LOST in its style. Between the handheld shaky-cam and the nonlinear storytelling with lots of flashbacks... right down to even the "let's just show the logo with spooky music" title sequence.
I am slowly, slowly warming up to it, but I agree that it had better start getting real good or I'm just going to get bored.

I get it, they need to figure it all out, but it's really running at a snails pace.

i agree this last episode was entirely forgettable:
for a "we are running out of water" episode it was way too early after the "we are running out of air and energy" episodes
also it felt to familiar with all the testing of the ice and then nearly getting stuck .. didn't we have just the same on a desert planet
and "bug" hunting on the ship with airlocks etc. ... way too cliche for a first season.. and the "solution for the bug problem" was way too obvious... i
better hope the next episode doesn't involve food gathering on a jungle planet in which episode a foreign live form comes through the star gate...

I'm good with the pace and structure the show has taken so far. Why? Because it's realistic. This stuff wouldn't be taken care of in the course of a day. That's what makes it believable and a real sense of danger. Heck, as far as I know everybody is up for death. Star Trek Enterprise, when faced with the same opportunities, chose to have technology solve everything and that certainly did not make for interesting TV.
I will say that "Water" was more boring that the other episodes. I don't think it's because of the subject per se, but the B story with the alien was better than the A story on the planet. I was surprised Elie wasn't more snarky towards the daugher or Lt Scott. Heck, he even went to comfort her or take her away during her outburst.

I agree, I like the slower pacing of SGU, and that the characters haven't lost their sense of wonder yet. They still are amazed by the sight of a new planet or a ride in a shuttle; unlike some shows where in Episode 1 they're amazed at being in space, but by Episode 2 it's "Hasta la vista you tentacled freak!" :p
If you look at the later SG1 series, they were having massive space battles, and blowing up star systems; it was pretty obvious they couldn't out-do that. So they had to go back to basics, instead of trained marines fighting space-battles against alien forces week-in, week-out; they have a group of untrained unqualified randomers struggling to stay alive. I like it, but I do think they need to find their direction soon, I thought Water was quite weak..
p.s. has their been any indication what the object which flew off at the end of Air was? I originally thought it was the shuttle the senator went into, being jettisoned, but that's not the case.

It was a ship of some kind. My son, the SG-freak in the family, said it belonged to a group that was the enemies of the ancients or something. He recognized it right away, but I can't remember what he called it.

I love Stargate: SG1 as a series. Even the episodes with John Crichton and Aeryn Sun.
Stargate: Atlantis didn't interest me at all. I've honestly tried to watch the series but couldn't care less.
SG: U Looks very interesting, and the pilot was decent, but from what I've seen it's falling FAR short of what it should be.
They're trying to turn Stargate into Space Opera with large-scale battles and flying around in battlecruisers, totally ignoring character development and plot, other than throwing in the standard SyFy channel "Ooh look out! Alien bugs!" thing.
The Voyager comparison is TOTALLY valid. Would not be surprised if aliens with tinfoil in their hair showed up.
It seems like it's taking place more in the SG: Atlantis universe than the SG: 1 universe. Yes, I know they're the same, but as fictional universes go, Atlantis has a lot more fluff and filler.

I think it's even weirder that she went along with it. Even if it was Young's mind, it's someone else's body and that's just bizarre. When combined with the ending of Telford at her door, it makes me wonder if maybe they are having an affair.

In SG:U? There hasn't been any space battle in it (or, unlike the previous series or the film, there is no evil alien adversary in it yet, in spite of being 6 episodes in), whereas in SG-1/Atlantis by the end they were blowing up star systems and nuking hive ships. And SG:U seems to me to be far more slow paced and centred around character development than the other, more action-oriented series.
I think Rush is one of the better characters in any of the Stargate series, and the Young/Telford rivalry is brewing nicely.

Eli was wearing a zip up sweatshirt hoody and wiping his head moaning about the heat (mind you while using some floating alien remote control camera but I can let that go)...but sweatshirts in the jungle?? IT'S JUST NOT RIGHT!! :D

True to life? They are on a spaceship traveling faster than light and visiting planets by going through rings planted by ancient aliens...are we really arguing about this? I need to find a light bulb to repair.

It's not the best ever but since I don't like watching anything but sci fi or stuff that's in the future/space I don't have many choices. Like Defying Gravity...put it in NY I would hate the drama but since it's on a ship its automatically tolerable.
They cancel everything decent anyway.

OK, there's already a thread somewhere about SGU, but here it goes. The show is just Dulll (yes 3 LLL's).
Seriously, the guy just blurts out "It's a solar flare, causes the gates to go back in time" matter of factly. The rest of the cast is more or less like "Oh, OK is that why we are still alive?" WTF!!!
At least on other shows, they would spend half the show trying to figure it out.
They got to see their own deaths, that was fun in and Alien sort of way.
I keep waiting for something good to happen, but it's so dark and monotone in it's delivery that I'm starting to think this is it...
Maybe if they spent a little more in the graphics department, or added some background muzac... Painted the wall's a happy Yellow, something!!!!

The last episode "Earth" wasn't bad...but this one was painful to watch. The whole shaky cam, POV thing gives me headaches too.
I don't have high expectations for any show anymore though...BSG broke my heart with the rushed last few episodes and weird ending. The first few seasons I actually thought finally someone did it right but they blew it in my opinion and "The Plan" was hard to watch and made me think they just pasted together cutting room floor material.
Defying Gravity was ok but had it's lame moments...the new Star Trek movie was too shiny and 20 something...if there was more of the quality of SG1 and BSG's first seasons out there I would be happy.

Wasn't too crazy about "Life" - need more action - it's supposed to be a Science Fiction show, but I guess it's really a SyFy show now...

I hated how they did that for BG.
It would not be to bad if they charged 1/2 as much for 1/2 a season but they charged nearly full season price for 1/2 a season.
Pissed me off to no end that to get season 2 of BG it cost me about 60-70 bucks compare to 30-40 for season 3.

This was the first decent episode of the new series.
They gave the doctor a good boot in the ass and sent him on his way.
How long before he jumps into the new alien ship and catches up to them for some payback? Thoughts of Star Trek wrath of Khan?
If they keep killing off the crew, how many shows can they have left? ;)
Not many escaped the planet in the first place...

I really like this show. The previous two episodes "Time" and "Life" I thought were not that great, but on the whole I find the show very compelling, and it got back on track with "Justice."
*SPOILERS*
I really expected the chair to work, and I guess it still might.. just gotta wake that guy up. Rush obviously isn't gone for good, but I can't wait to find out what happens. I feel like anywhere they go from here is going to cause the feel of the show to change, and I have mixed feelings about that, but I'm looking forward to it.
One sort of strange thing about this show, though, is they seem to rely heavily on the viewer having pretty extensive knowledge of SG1 to get much out of it (sure, they briefly explain everything, but so much stuff would seem so hasty and random if the viewer didn't watch SG1), yet the feel of the show is really nothing like SG1, so I don't know that I would have expected the audiences to overlap by more than about 50% if they didn't both have Stargate in the name.

well I figure they are relaying on the fact that a lot of the people who liked and watch star gate also happen to like and watch BSG.
It does seem weird they are relaying on a lot of SG understanding but the longer the show goes on the more I noticed that they are using less and less of it so it is only few random things that have to understand on why it works.

I didn't like the "grittier, edgier, re-imagined" BSG. I grew up on the original one.
I'm more a Sci-Fi purist - lots of space ships and laser blasts. None of this "real world" who's wants to date who and who's sleeping with who and who hates who. I get enough of that in real-life - don't want to watch it in the little spare time that I have to recoup from "life". (An episode for CSI was about this).
In the words of U2, "When fact is fiction and TV reality" - wow, it's not about reality becoming TV, its about TV becoming reality (TV was always a nice escape).

He did get stranded on a planet with an alien ship. Do you watch enough Sci-Fi to see where it's going?
i watch enough scifi to see that this is a contrived plot. i just would have liked a plot where they explore what's new in this distant galaxies. now we get a plot where he somehow manages to fix a alien spaceship while the alien crew couldn't and then this ship is faster than destiny so he can catch up and he miraculously knows where destiny is going. then he will be trying to rejoin destiny. he will save destiny in a battle with other alien spaceships by unexpectedly coming in and shooting an alien spaceship down. bla, bla, bla......
aside of that it was stupid to kick out their best scientist and it's immoral to condem someone to a likely death just because of a minor crime.
and the fat nerd is now the only one who knew that the doctor did the framing. so in real life the nerd would have to make his knowledge public to protect himself.
at the same time they retired the commander based on suspicion. now they all suspect him to have killed the doctor. why doesn't he have to step down now?
as I say it's a contrived plot. i had hoped for something new. BSG had a number of good plots where people behaved like real people with all their flaws. but they still acted like real people.

I agree.
The first few episodes I pretty much wrote it off. But the last two were pretty decent.
The whole military vs. civilians conflict is interesting. Having worked in a military & civilian environment the conflict is real.
I think they should have left Rush out in space for a while longer.

The show is moving at an odd pace, I guess its looking to find the right pace, but hasn't found it yet.
A couple of dangling plot lines. They searched the ship the last time they came out of FTL? and searched/fixed unused parts of the ship, but nothing really came of it.
This episode, no mention of continuing the search, but suddenly they built a buffer (MacGyver?) and Rush jumped into the chair. At least they are moving the plot somewhat forward...
I like the show, but I'm not sure how long its going to stick around... I hate to get involved in yet another show that lasts 2 seasons.

i have episode 14 - just waiting to get home so i can watch it. it does seem to be moving wierdly, this stargate is odd because there is an actual moving plot. i kind of prefer the older one where everything was setup and they just go to other worlds.

Although it's refreshing to have a Stargate where the top egghead doesn't look down on the number two egghead. In the movie Daniel didn't think much of Dr. Gary Meyers. In SG1 Carter didn't think much of McCay, although grudging respect did creep in a little. In Atlantis, McCay openly scoffed at nearly everything Zelenka did.
Rush, in Universe, highly respects Eli. This is seen throughout the series thus far. It's openly stated by Rush in Human. I though it was the best episode so far, except for the Daniel bit. After watching Human, it's easy to see why Rush is so obsessed with Destiny. [Spoiler] He lost the chance to say good-bye to his dying wife because the the Icarus Project. [\Spoiler]

They are playing with pretty powerful concepts, but it all feels so rushed that they really don't explore anything with any real depth.
Imagine being wheelchair bound and suddenly being able to walk, breath and interact. Very cool concept. In fact the whole stone thing really opens up a new dimension for them to explore, considering the aliens have communication stones too.
So is that scientist now part of the ship or what? He dissapeared into the ether :p Just another ghost in the machine...
Well, the show is finally starting to move, but the characters are still a little bit rough. Still no emotional attachement to any of the characters, except maybe Eli.

You wrote "chick scientist" above though.
yea i thought it was that disabled chick that the OP was referring to lol. woops
My wife thinks that the guy who disappeared from the chair will cause the ship to have some sort of sentience from now on. Sort of like Moya from Farscape.
that makes sense actually, maybe his concious mind will gain control of the ship!?
I think her and Lt. Scott had something going on at Icarus base before they jumped to the Destiny.
you reckon? i was actually thinking the Col. might have done it...

Well, they must have saw this thread, because there was a focus on LT James (big boobs LT) and who she was sleeping with before the show started (LT Scott).
So, I was thinking they’d continue from the last show. Nope. Just another show on the ship. Details later when others have seen the show.

This show is SOOOO Frustrating!
There is no continuity whatsoever!
I don't know if they are just trying to lay the seeds for future seasons or WTF?
Seriously, did they let a different writer write each episode of the show?
Things finally take a turn for the better, the characters are getting a little more personality and taking shape and they do this episode.
The constant human struggle act is already tired. I trust you, no I don't, yes I do, no I don't. Get on with it already! We know everyone on the show has a ********* up past, but how did they get into a top secret program like this to begin with? LOL
Grrrr, they more or less repeated everyones issues that we've already seen.
OK, rant over. Whew I feel better now!
I tried to write a spoiler free post, so we'll go into more detail another time.
I never knew jumping galaxies only took 1 episode! LOL

time is relative to the person experiencing it ;) maybe the show actually went for 3 years but they fast forwarded it :P

i thought it was very boring. no aliens (big ones). the sex was boring. no story. hallucinations are so over rated. they need to
A) have that scientists guy learn to fly the ship
b) get in contact with the people that made the ship and ask for a re-vamp (new weapons etc)
c) come across a galaxy where those evil aliens "rein supreme" and kill them all!

Could not get into this show it looked like a assortment of camera effects to make it look dark and edgy like Battlestar Galactica but it seems to have no plot or lost the plot like Lost.
All for giving a show a 2nd chance but they should have called it something different like lost in space instead of leaching of the Stargate name.

They really need to choose a direction on this. My son (11) wants to watch, but you just never know when someone's going to be rompin around!

The show hasn't really had a plot. Danger Will Robinson! I think Lost in Space actually had a plot (even the Matt LeBlanc movie)!
So far the show is a bit Schizophrenic. They start down a plot line and then in the next episode, they address it with a 10 second conclusion and move on to the next thing.
Seriously, like last episode was written by Bob, he did this big setup, now Joe is like WTF, I don't want to do that, I'll stop the ship and they can just walk through the gate! Brilliant!
It looks like they want to have self contained episodes, sort of like Eureka or Star Trek, but it just doesn't flow.
We get it, Jealousy, Fear, Longing, Panic... all the human emotion is still there. It took a tic to explain that? Seriously? I would rather have seen tribbles invade the ship, put a little levity in there.
Oh who am I kidding, it's like that really bad movie that you won't turn off, just because it has to get better...

You’re not a very good googler. :)
Google Julia Benson for Video. She has a great nude scene that’s all over the place. Or just Google her pics.

Did anyone watch the first part of Incursion? I thought it was pretty good, looking forward to seeing the second part on the 11th... Why do they wait so long???
As for all the loose plot ends, I seem to remember the other stargates and BSG doing the same thing... Then they tie up the loose ends in future seasons.

Best quote of the show...
"I guess the elevator doesn't just go up and down"
So it's interesting that others can reach Destiny, but only by destroying the planet they use for energy.
Nice to see they are finally moving the show along.
