View Full Version : Where to store iPhone during school?

I am getting an iPhone soon, the fund is almost complete:D Now my major dilema is not just what color to get, its where to store my phone during the day. If I keep it in my locker and the lock breaks or I don't shut it all the way, it will be stolen.
If i keep it in my pocket and my school catches me, they will keep it until one of my parents shows up to get it with me. I know the stupidest policy......, also if it falls out and cracks or gets stolen, I am screwed. I have no idea what to do? This will be my first true good cell phone. I am upgrading from this

Put it in your front pocket. The teacher's won't catch you if you aren't using it. So leave it in airplane mode. Except between classes. :)

Get a case, and put it on your belt? How about put it in your backpack? (If you carry one). What do the other students do?

Put it in your front pocket and don't mess with it.
If it rings or vibrates, he could be busted. So he has three options here:
1. Keep it in front pocket but keep it powered off during the school day
2. Keep it in locker -- also powered off. Odds of lock breaking is honestly pretty small. I wouldn't sweat that one.
3. Leave it at home.
It's possible to turn off ringtones and whatnot, but what if you forget when you're really tired or stressing over a major test (or over girlfriend woes)? So the safer option is to either leave it home or if you must take it to school, turn it off to reduce risk of being busted, and then turn it back on after school.

I planned on getting the ZAGG case, as I have it on my MBP and really like it. And we aren't allowed to carry backpacks. Other kids just keep them in their pockets but the buttons get pushed and then the phone makes noises etc and they sometimes lose them

do this and simply have it in airplane mode or silent switch activated

The safest place would probably be at home while you're at school if your school has a policy against it. On the other hand, when I was in grade school I would keep my phone in my pocket, on silent, and not take it out unless I was sure I wouldn't get caught.
Of course I was using this:

So I think the iPhone will be easier.

Trust me, you won't have to worry about that with the iPhone.

Well
1.That makes sense, I kinda like the idea of browsing MR when in biology,
2.My fear about the lock is me not fully locking it or it just screws up, that would happen to me.
3.I need it at school beacuse I commute and for keeping in touch with others
And its a all boys school so not to many girlfriend woes:(

Well, I just keep mine in my front pocket.
I turn it off before school, and turn it on after. Unless I'm feeling like I can get away with doing something on it in class, which then I put it on silent mode.
But then again, I just have to have it out of sight and turned off during the school day, so I can keep it in my pocket.

I went to a school with a similar policy. Set a passcode, set it to unlock after 10 incorrect entries, and put it on silent with vibrate off. Put it in your pocket. Then, if you have MobileMe, do a remote wipe if someone steals it from you or if it falls out.

If your not going to use it during they day due to fear it will be taken away, whats the point in bringing it to school? Do you really need it with you?

Hows-a-bout ya turn it off, then you don't have anything to worry about. When teachers take things like cell phones it means there is not need to have them in school.
Back in my high school days we had pagers that vibrated loudly, so it was shut off. In college we were allowed to have phones so we just turned them on silent.

I've never had any problems carrying my phone on silent in my pocket before.

Back in my days we weren't aloud phones but the teachers could not do anything about. I used to carry my then 3315 in my pocket on vibrate at all times, and if they tried to take the phone from me i wouldn't have allowed it. I know my friend didn't they through all sorts of punishment at him but he never caved in.
There was no way i was leaving it in my bag at all.

If your school will punish you for having it then leave it at home. It's not a stupid policy, it's a policy formed around kids like you who think browsing MR while in any class is a good idea.
You'll have plenty of time to waste on MR when you get out of school.

How has no one said "in yer butt?"
I'm dissapointed you guys.
OP, in seriousness, I carry my iPhone in my front pocket of my khakis all day long at work and I dont have my phone fall out, and I dont even have a case on it. I think that is your best bet. I wouldnt leave it in a locker. It only takes one person of questionable morality to see you put the phone away. He tells others you have it and before you know it you come to locker to find your phone missing.
Airplane mode, passcode verfication, and silent switch will go far during the day. Oh, and dont put it in the pocket with other things such as coins or keys.

I agree completely with that reasoning and agree it is not a stupid policy.

I am waiting for the classic lame excuse from these people arguing why it is not a stupid policy.

Do you drive your own car to school? Then just leave it in the glovebox where no one can see it

I keep my iPhone in my pockets at school. I wear khakis too, and it has never slid out. Just keep it in your pocket, and keep it on vibrate.

At my school, the rule is that all cell phones must be kept in lockers and not in pockets, purses, ect. What I would do is put your iPhone in a large baggy bag with bubble wrap and stuff surrounding it so the bag is disguised to be something like extra pencils and stuff. Then put a shelf in your locker that is about 1.5 inches tall (use on of the expandable ones, they really work) and put the bag flush under it.
You said that it any other students saw that you have an iPhone in your locker, they would attempt to steal it. Before you leave your house put your iPhone in the bag and set it atop some books or something or just carry is like a folder or something as to not direct attention to it. Put the bag in its place and go off to class. Then when it is time to leave go to the bathroom with the bag (to hide that you have a phone in it), take your phone out and put it into your pocket and carry the bag home with you.
Yes, lots of extra trouble to do, but if I was really worried about my phone that is what I would do.
I attached a picture of a diagram if it is confusing.

Pocket and on silent, if your paranoid about it falling out then get some Velcro sewn onto the pocket so it cant fall out and teachers can't go sticking there hands in there to look...................

Jesuit? Mandatory uniforms? No girls? No backpacks allowed? Afraid of locker theft?
I think the problem isn't where to put your ipod...

pocket and OFF! no need to have it on silent or on airplane mode or whatever..... if it does happen to fall out of your pocket... it will look a heck of a lot better to a teacher that is around if the phone is OFF rather than on... which will make you look like you are trying to get over on them....

If you don't drive by yourself to school then don't bring it. If you do drive leave it in the car
