Program to rip DVD

I'm looking for a program that will allow me to rip a DVD so that I can watch it while travelling without having the actual DVD with me. I find that having the actual DVD spinning in the drive takes more battery power. Is there anyway I can either put it on my hard drive as either an AVI or MPEG?
