I want to startup an Xcode project at boot time. I have dragged my alias into "System Preferences/Accounts/Login Items" but when I boot it just brings up TextEdit with a blank window and the name of my alias.

What is the correct procedure to bring up my Xcode project during boot?

The alias points to the .xcodeproj? You could try dragging the .xcodeproj file directly.

Yes and that is what I tried (dragged the .xcodeproj alias to the "Login items" list directly.

Sorry, I misunderstood ... I dragged the project file now instead of the alias and that works. Thanks.
