View Full Version : Any free MIDI notation software out there?

I'm not sure if this is the proper forum to post this question, but in any event...

I recently switched over to a Mac and have found replacements for most Windows programs... except for one:

On Windows there was a free program called Noteworthy Player, which simply read a MIDI file and spat out the actual music notation. It could also play the file, but that was it (no editing or composing). I play the guitar and have used this player as a virtual music stand for practicing songs from my old MIDI collections of yesteryear.

Yet despite much searching, I have yet to find a similar program for OS X. I've found plenty of notation programs, but they always include composition capabilities (which I don't need), and as such are not free. Does anyone here know of a free, no-frills MIDI notation program for OS X?

Thanks!

I found something called Finale NotePad a while ago. I'm not sure whether it does exactly what you want, but it was a free simple notation app. I think it only ran in Classic though.

Edit: The site (http://www.finalemusic.com/notepad/) seems to list a new OS X version now. However, it looks like you have to pay ($25) for the MIDI import/export functionality.

Hey Nermal,

Thanks for the link. Indeed, one does have to pay for the MIDI import/export... which is a bummer. I think I also remember seeing on their site that the $25 version is limited to 5 staves, which is not practical for some MIDIs that have lots of tracks.

The search goes on!
