Downgrade iPhone 3GS 3.1

I have a friend with a 3GS and 3.1 software. Is it possible to downgrade to 3.01, jailbreak, and then upgrade and jailbreak 3.1?

I have no experience with the 3GS so I don't want to mess up their phone or lock it up.
