eSATA through optical disk connector?

I know it's possible to replace the MacBook (and MBP) optical disk by a second hard drive using MCE's OptiBay (http://store.mcetech.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=MTOS&Category_Code=STORHDOPTIBAY).

But I wonder if anybody tried hooking a SATA/eSATA cable to the optical drive connector to connect an external eSATA to the MacBook. I see no reason why this could not be done.

I would like to add weight to this topic.

External storage. Backup.
Instead of slow usb or expensive firewire external drives, you could use bare 3.5 7200 rpm disks. Buy an esata/usb/fw cradle or just a power adapter for the drive and plug it into your mac.

SSD people would appreciate the transfer rates...

So long as the lobo header is a conventional SATA connector it will work fine. People are already doing this with the 9400m Minis.
