iPhone 2G question

Hey all,

My girlfriend upgraded to the 3GS, and she was nice enough to give me her 2G iphone. Since it is a phone, do I need a SIM card in it to use it as a iPod touch? Also is it needed to jailbreak etc. I don't plan on using it as a phone, as my cell service is a CDMA provider. Any advice

I have jailbroke it, although after tons of failed attempts, cydia doesn't launch, it loads up for a breif second, then closes itself out (as well as other apps) I have been using Icy but I do want cyida as well.

I think you may have to hacktivate it... Though, I'm not sure.
