Jailbreak 3GS

Folks quick advice: just got me a 32GB 3GS and wanted to jailbreak it. My current version is 3.0.1 so I downloaded the 3.0.1 ipsw and with redsn0w tried to jailbreak. It didn't work and got a msg wrong firmware. So I downloaded ipsw 3.0 and tried it and it said ok.

Question here is: shall I go ahead with 3.0 or am I doing something wrong with the 3.0.1?

For 3.0.1 you still have to use the 3.0 ipsw, so just point redsnow to the 3.0 ipsw.

pointing to 3.0 is the correct process. It was a typo on most writeups. You are going about it correctly.

Ok this is the process that I'm going to take to JB my 3GS running 3.0.1
I also have the hacked 5.1 carrier file with MMS, tethering, and VisVoice all working. Will updating to 3.1 mess these up??
Please let me know if I'm missing a step:

1.) Use redsn0w to jailbreak the 3.0.1 firmware (select the 3.0 firmware eventhough I'm running 3.0.1)

2.) Use the newly released Pwnage tool 3.1.3 to create a hacked 3.1 ipsw

3.) Restore my iPhone to this hacked ipsw

is there anything I'm missing? What about the ECID files? Do i need to save them before the I update?

You got it, nope there's nothing you need to do with the ECID files, after you restore to the 3.1 JB ipsw, you can register your 3.1 info with Cydia for any future JBs.

Adding on to this... I have the 3GS on JB'd 3.0.1 and I'm wondering if I create the ipsw with the pawnage tool, will i have to resync all my apps and re set everything up or does it just update the firmware or what? I just don't want to have to go and resetup all my apps and download all the cydia components again. Anyone know?

If you use Pwnage Tool to create a custom restore IPSW (I'm assuming you mean going to 3.1 but you didn't say), then install it with iTunes, it will write over the entire existing firmware and jailbreak except for updating the baseband.

Before you start, Sync (backup) in iTunes, when done, re-sync your apps, address book, music, movies back.

You will have to redo the whole Cydia apps thing

Once you get to 3.1, iTunes will do a pop-up to update the carrier file.

Approve it, then reboot or respring.

You will then have MMS as long as your carrier supports it.

This thread is about JB a 3GS to 3.1. If you want to do something different before fixing MMS, you will need to spell it out otherwise I will assume you are posting in this thread because you want to also JB a 3GS to 3.1
