Description:: Verizon has teamed with Google on Tuesday to co-develop several Android-based devices that will be pre-loaded with innovative applications from both parties as well as third-party developers, in an effort to fight off the iPhone and its exclusive agreement with AT&T.

The Google Voice service will be allowed on all Android-powered Verizon handsets, which is likely a direct challenge to Apple and the iPhone. The first two handsets are expected to be released in a matter of weeks.

Analysts expect Verizon Wireless, a joint venture of Verizon Communications and Vodafone and the largest U.S. wireless service provider, to unveil at least three Android-based phones from such makers as Motorola, Samsung, and HTC later this month.

All Verizon and Google have to do is come up with some good applications to put on their phones--not that overpriced/overrated garbage Verizon has now. Forgot--make sure Verizon continues to get at least 30-50 profit on any apps that are developed for these new phone. Good Luck.

AT&T doesn't get money for apps sold on the App Store.
Apple get's a 30% cut for everything sold on the App Store.

well personally i believe that no phone will soon be able to compete with the iphone. i like other phones but i could never get rid of the iphone. without the app store my phone to me would be a worthless piece of **** and have no purpose, i would also need to buy an ipod, and personally i believe att has better coverge than verizon

Cmon V show me the G

apps, smapps.... I am currently utilizing .04% of the apps in the apps store.
Music, I have purchsed 8 songs from itunes yet I have over 4000 songs, from various rips and purchases elsewhere.

Personally I don't need the apps store. All I want is internet access on my phone.

I wish success for this pairing. After all, it doesn't really affect me if they succeed or fail. In fact, failure may be worse because no competition sucks for the consumer.

I'm happy that Google's Android is going to be successful; well, at least successful in eliminating Windows Mobile. I much prefer the iPhone's serious competition to come from the Linux crowd than from an offering from Microsoft. First of all, because it should be easier to port wares between Linux and OS X [versus Windows], and second of all because it continues the long-term trend of marginalizing of Windows on all fronts.
