iMac bought April 2009 now developing gradient issue?

I bought a 3.06 ghz iMac in April 2009. The screen was awesome. Over time it seems, I have developed the gradient issue. It seems alot to pay for a system that has these sorts of issues. I thought that this problem was not developed over time, but was a manufacturing defect? Can this issue be caused by overheating?
