Ok just a question... dont know if its in the right spot. say a friend emailed me with a word document attached to it. would i be able to open it with out microsoft word on my mac?

If you don't want to install a software just for one document file, then try Google Docs. Just upload the file to their server and read/edit it there. Google Docs allows you to export doc file to pdf too. It's very handy.
