I have a .avi movie on my computer. When I try to play it quicktime says I need additional software...?

What do I do to play it?

Perian.

While you're there you may as well pick up Flip4Mac, VLC and Handbrake for all your video stuffings arounds.

Like Chundles said get VLC player for all your non quicktime files.
But you can still try to change the .avi file to a .mov and see if that works.
lets say your file is named "movie.avi" change the .avi to "movie.mov"
just edit the name and allow the change.

I wouldn't recommend that, just install Perian and then all Quicktime apps can open all sorts of films (not just Quicktime, but anything else that uses QuickTime, e.g. the Finder)

Oh and of course every machine need VLC, if VLC wont play it.. nothing will 😛

Yes I installed a couple of those and now it works fine😀 Thanks guys!

Now what's a free app that will allow me to burn the .avi files onto a DVD so it will play on my DVD player?

VLC not the best

MPlayer OSX is going to work better than VLC will. I have used both programs and never had any issues with MPlayer whereas I did occasionally run into problems with VLC. Try them both out and see for yourself.
