My 7 month waiting for the 4g ipod has finally paid off if this happens. I will not be tweaked if there is no colrs and is not thinner. With the possibilty of prices dropping we could see the 15 GB sticking around.

Prices drops seem the most surprising, when the previous rumor was referring to prices staying at the current MSRP. But that rumor may turn out to be about the minis, and Apple would be crazy to lower the price on those with so much demand.

I don't know about this. White iPods with colorful scroll-wheels? And cheaper?
I guess it'll further take demand of of the iPod minis. I don't think that they will lower the low-end price though, as they don't make much on them already. Maybe $299, $369, $449 or something at the same sizes out now and a 60GB version at $499. I think that they will stay with the white enclosure to keep them distinct but I would like to see them have the iPod mini type of scroll wheel.
There won't be new iPod mini's yet. Period. They can't even get enough of the current model until July 24th, so nothing new there.

I'm not so sure about the whole different colour scroll wheel idea. I like the current look - pure and classy.

ThinkSecret reports (http://www.thinksecret.com/news/newipods.html) that Apple is planning on released a "thinner, sleeker" white iPod on Monday, July 19th.
The new iPods are said to be roughly the same dimensions as the current standard (non-Mini) iPods, but slightly thinner and with a new scroll wheel design.
ThinkSecret cryptically reports that the announcement "will be delivered through an out-of-the-ordinary publicity medium".

Colorful scroll wheels on a white ipod sounds pretty bad... but I'll withhold judgment until I see it, given what apple has managed in the past.
I like the idea of going to a mini-like scroll wheel; I have a mini, and that button design is their best yet.
Prices won't drop. ipods are still in extremely high demand, almost more than apple can meet. Why drop prices? Higher capacity at the same prices would be nice, but at some point, who cares? I have 4 gigs of music... 20 gigs, 40 gigs, 60 gigs, 100 gigs... it's all the same to me.

If they're cheaper this could be a terrific release. The only things have been holding me off from getting an ipod are the price and the fact that I don't need 15 gigs of space for $299. I'd get a mini but I don't want to wait for 6 months. :D

Well...I'm an apple newbie but here is some (maybe) interesting information. Last week I ordered a new powerbook and got a 15gig ipod with the student discount. The order status page had the powerbook and the protection care plan with shipping dates of " On or before 07/22/2004" which is a week after I ordered them. The ipod has not shipped and has a shipping date of "On or before 07/26/2004" which would be a week after this monday?
As I said before i'm an apple newbie (this is my first mac) so this might all be junk (corse...so could be the rumor), just thought I'd give you all that interesting information.

Out-of the-ordinary publicity medium means that it will be announced via the iTMS! :D Good thinking. I had in mind maybe an interview on some news channel and Steve would bust out with them. Or maybe on Oprah! ;) But yea, iTMS sounds appropriate enough. Anyways, they are to be announced on Monday but TS said nothing about when they ship. JOEJG said his iPod order is to ship on or before 7/26 so maybe they'll ship later in the week or the week following the announcement. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

I am thinking the unusual means for introducing the new iPods will be through TV ads. That would sure get the word out.

This is sounding good! I hope that the price reductions are significant, however, it doesn't seem likely. If the price reduction rumor is true, then we can say goodbye to colour screen and WiFi, like we were hoping for!

It would be really surprising if they are cheaper. May be they would upgrade the hard disk space in the same price. So now 300$ for 20 GB. No more 15 GB ones. :)

I'm getting one, unless they announce some sort of videopod that will come out in the next few months. I am just hoping the battery will be significantly improved. That should have been their top priority, not just making it smaller or more colorful.

I just hope they offer one in the classic white/silver motif. I'm all for giving colors to those who want them, but I'd probably be more inclined to buy a used classic than a new, colorized version.
I do love the new scroll wheel on the minis, though.

Jul 17, 2004, 12:43 PM
Interesting rumor, I was quite content with the previous rumors of August updates - that to me seemed a little more realistic. But I guess we'll see Monday! I'm not sure exactly how a different colored scroll whell would look though - I thought Apple might just color the entire iPods a la the iPod minis, but I'm curious to see how asthetically pleasing this new iPod will be if the rumors are indeed bang on.
most interesting thing would be airtunes enabled ipods - would be really rockin' if you sit on the toilet with the ipod in your hands changing the sound in the living room ... well i would buy one ... i want to do this toilet thing :)

I'd really like the battery life on the iPod to be a little better than it is now, just so all my iPod-bashing friends will shut up about battery life. If it goes DOWN with the new, sleeker, iPod, I'll be very disappointed. Unless they've found some magic new battery, or the other stuff takes up less room so they can improve battery life AND reduce size.
Oh well, I've already got my own 20GB 3rd gen, so I'm not worried.

I can't believe only two people have commented about the battery. That would be one of my main concern is a drop (not too likely as would be a very bad move) or status quo battery capacity. Thinner is nice but the biggest grip about the iPod is batter life and now some more viable competitors are coming out with much longer battery capacities. Of course, I assume Apple recognizes this and is coming to market with a thinner, longer battery life iPod.
Of course, I also hope the iPod I just ordered last week turns out to be once of these new iPods.

I don't buy it. Toshiba announced the 60 GB hard drvies and Apple had pre-rdered a bunch. Those things weren't shipping until early August I believe. Unless Apple got a large number of thsoe things 1 month early this won't be happening. I wouldn't expect new iPods until sometime in August. I especially wouldn't expect them to ship until cram and jam finishes.
Just my opinion.

I just want bigger capacity and longer battery life (and a lower price wouldn't hurt either!).
If this does come to pass, I will be selling my 30GB iPod for sure and upgrading to the 60GB.
My 30GB is full to the max and I still have songs on my computer that are wanting to get on my iPod!!

Jul 17, 2004, 02:02 PM
Keep it white please.
While the mini looks good (just got my wife a pink one for her birthday) the svelte-ness of the white iPod really appeals to me. Unfortunately for me I'm a big fan of the 1G and 2G layout (I have a 2G 20GB) but my headphone jack has cracked from years of use (battery is STILL GOOD thank you very much) so things are a lot quieter and i have to crank the iPod to almost max volume to hear things.
So new iPod model or not I think on the 2nd anniversary of me getting my 2G iPod I will be buying a new one and seeing what I can get for this model on eBay. I really liked the button placement around the wheel instead of above it. The iPod Mini's layout would be nice on a 4G but not the colors.
And daaaang that mini is small. Pretty amazing.

Hmmm... Out of the ordinary publicity medium...
I'd expect Steve Jobs to personally do an info-mercial on MTV before he releases the iPods on the iTMS... it's about *publicity,* bang, and fanfare before it is about "neatness". iTMS is not a launch platform... there's a relatively tiny amount of people on iTMS at any one time compared to the internet in general (or TV).

i think many of us have forgot about the Hpod and how it has been a big deal for hp, apple can not launch a new iPod and expect hp to sell the old one. my guess, is that hp will launch its version on the same day as apple does. I can already see the commercial now," Hp and Apple unite, to produce this sharp looking hPod", maybe they will have a whole new interface. I could see apple coming up with a create a pod. Where u send them a picture and they will either create a film like sticker that goes around the ipod or something of that sort. Apple is all for uniqueness and that means they want to set themselves apart from other companies. So they could have a whole new scheme. Create a pod. thats all for now....

As an early buyer of the 1st gen 5gb iPod, I think I am ready to put the old girl to rest. I think the first and second generation iPods are the best, I never did like the buttons placed up top. I must say that my iPod has been through hell with my general frequent drops on the concrete and wear and tear. It still performs like a champ though, scratches and all. I was contemplating selling it, but I wonder if the 1st gen iPod might be a cool nostalgic item in the years ahead. I think it would be a nice time to retire it while it is still in a good working condition. I too like the mini very much. I have been used to using 5gb of storage of music and transfering of files for three years now, but I rreally want the classy white.

Have you ever tried the buttons? I felt exactly the same way when the buttons came out, I wondered why so far away from the scroll wheel? But now that I have used mine for close to a year I wouldn't have it any other way. I know the buttons will most likely disappear on the next revision but I still think they look really cool when they light up, and are quite ergonomic.
I need to try one of those minis though with the tilt and push scroll wheel. I like the idea but I worry a little about having to push on the wheel to make the button go. I like the touch sensiteve buttons. So enough about buttons bring on the 4Gs ;)

I'd like more space, but I don't really need 60GB either so maybe whatever the new mid-range is would be perfect for me. I really doubt there'd be price drops on the new iPods. Let's take a look at the current prices:
iPod mini = $249
15GB iPod = $299
20GB iPod = $399
40GB iPod = $499
What would they drop the prices to? Theres no room for price drops unless they also dropped the price on the iPod mini's, but that wouldn't be a smart move since the mini's are literally flying off the shelves. But if they did drop the price on everything, maybe it'll look something like this:
iPod mini = $229
low-end iPod = $279
mid-end iPod = $379
high-end iPod = $479
nagromme
Jul 17, 2004, 03:00 PM
Unusual publicity? Obviously they will be dropping with little parachutes. Be ready!
So the new colors/higher GB rumors for ~August will actually be new Minis. Makes sense. Maybe we'll even get two capacities of Mini--more drives available to sell that way!
And the 4G iPod won't have to wait? Cool. I was hoping for Al, because my PowerBook is so durable, but on pure looks I always prefer Apple's white stuff. As long as it has a clickwheel I'll be happy.
I hope TS is right on this.
And I hope they add enough features (even on the software side) to tempt me away from the Mini--which I assume will also have to drop in price if the new iPods really are cheaper. (I'm skeptical.) I've tried the Mini and only features--not raw capacity would tempt me to pay more for something larger. iTunes handles low-capacity players very elegantly with big libraries.
I won't hold out hope for major new hardware features--especially not if these will be cheaper. But... one reason Apple MIGHT opt for all-white instead of white-and-Al... to allow a WiFi signal :) Probably just a dream.
Battery life? I've never cared, personally. I never play more than 2-3 hours at a stretch, and there are lots of iPod power sources.
(And why the talk of colored wheels? Where did that come from? I don't see that at TS--and I'd expect a colored case before a colored wheel. I'd like to see a white plastic option AND colored Al options on all models of iPod, actually.)

I agree with the people who are against the 3G buttons! I HATE them. Yes, I have tried them -- I think I got carpal tunnel in my thumb from just 5 minutes with it! :) They are very un-Apple.

Maybe. Maybe not. I remember they offered this same deal last year (or was it the year before last?) too. So it's really just Apple trying to get students to buy their computers before they head back to school. If this offer was made to the general public, then yeah I might agree with you that Apple's trying to get rid of some iPods before the new models are released.

New iPods? Well, I'm keeping my 3G iPod, but I want to know what this new medium is.
I also think Apple is just building up hype for this one. How many times did we get moving targets for the last few releases of hardware? Great...
But, if Apple does release the iPod soon, it must mean the iMacs will just blow us away. I thought Steve was going to save up an iPod release for the iMacs, but maybe not anymore.

Apple could offer something like a 10% discount if purchased through the iTMS store. iTMS sells music, why not iPods? If they also advertised other Apple products (new iMac?!), imagine how much more people would be exposed to Apple. (definitely more than aaple.com website traffic). I've seen your three posts in two threads. You don't need to repeat it. If you want more people to take your word for it, you could tell us more about how you got the information. However, even then people will choose what to believe and continue to speculate. That's one of the reasons we have forums.
I think wireless connections would be great. How long would it take to fill an iPod that way?
For me it would be sufficient if I could stream from the iPod to my stereo. I guess current wireless technology is far slower than firewire (just a guess though) meaning wired "filling" is still the way to go...

I think WiFi has MANY great potential uses in an iPod.
1. syncing -- only sort of useful.. would be cool for minor updates but not a big, first-time big sync. Then again, it would need a separate power charger.
2. AirTunes remote.
Those are the obvious ones... but people, think BIG.
Take your iPod to any WiFi hotspot, and maybe get some plain-text email in a basic email reader application (which you set up on your Mac, and have the settings sync over).
In the future, how about iTMS2Go. You want to buy a track on the spot, when you're not near your computer (say, you're at a party)... Maybe some version of iTMS with the iPod navigation system. It would sync right back up to iTunes. Let's see some other player/music store do that!
Rendezvous iPod music sharing. Hey, some other 4G iPod user is on my train, now I can stream his non-protected music... and if I like it, click a button and go to iTMS2Go and purchase it myself!
I know some of this might seem silly, maybe it is. Just brainstorming -- imagine what talented professionals could come up with! :)
Of course, we won't see WiFi in an iPod until battery technology is better.

WMA: Fat chance. They're converting WMAs to AAC on the Windows version of iTunes.
Oggs: It might be possible, compared to WMA anyway. I myself don't use it since I'm not an audiophile, but I think Apple will want to push AAC as long as it is the format for the Music Store.

which newsweekly--Newsweek or TIME?--was it that broke the embargo on the announcement of the iMac? I remember being in san francisco for MacWorld Expo and before Steve's keynote that announced the product, the story was on the cover of one of those two mags. We were standing in line, waiting to go in for the keynote, discussing it. Reporting at the time said steve j was pretty upset. I can't imagine them using the same mag for an intentional release this time. Somebody check out which one spilled the beans on the iMac, and my money's on the OTHER if something's to be released this time.

I just ordered the 17" Powerbook and a 20gb iPod with the Cram and Jam promotion. I had the order saved in my account for a few days waiting for more info on iPod updates but Apple called my Thursday and offered me $300 off to order it then. With Cram and Jam you need to order the iPod and PB at the same time...
Neither have shipped though (my iSight and extra battery have). Do you think, if these new iPods are released Monday that I could call them up and have them switch the iPod on the order or would I have to cancel whats left on the order and the re-order. Would it be worth the trouble?
Edit: Would Apple maybe just ship a new model over the old one as it seems they are out of stock of all the old models? Estimated ship date is the 27th right now on my order.

The debut of the new iPod on the cover of Newsweek doesn't necessarily mean anything out of the ordinary with the new iPod other then evolutionary changes. The iPod is a major success story for Apple and the industry. For that alone it deserves a feature story and/or cover. The story probably will go over all aspects of Apple's successes with iTMS as well. Perhaps they will indicate that the independent labels will be joining iTMS Europe. Don't think for a moment that SJ will not be a big part of the story in the mag.
An interesting sidelight of being in Newsweek is that the website is part of MSNBC, which is part of M$.

I could plug it into my car and not have to use a FM transmitter. Problem is, I only have a CD player, and I have no line-in in the back of my stereo. Pain in the neck I say, as I don't want to buy a new stereo just for an iPod - the point of getting the iPod is to not use the stereo. I can't really think of a solution to this. I have a 2003 Altima S. Also, the iPods storage can't keep up with my library, although it's getting close. I now have 65 GB of mp3s, and so a 60 barely doesn't fit. I guess that doesn't really matter though as I'd never carry my whole library around... I just want to use one in my car without a FM transmitter. Anyone have a spare CD player with line-in that want to give me?

Weekly magazines such as Newsweek and Time have the following week's date on the cover. Tomorrow when they both come out the date will say:
July 24, 2004
They both arrive at most airports on Sunday evening with the issue available Monday at newsstands. Mail delivery is usually on Tuesday. This has been the case almost since they first started publishing. MSNBC is where the Newsweek website resides. There will probably be an embargo on the story until late Sunday. Apple could even post the new iPods Sunday evening but I doubt it. They waited until the Monday of SJ's keynote to publish the flat panel iMac even though many had already seen it via the Time magazine article published late Sunday on the net and available to some people if they were at an airport or train station Sunday evening. Also it's possible it won't be the prime cover story. Nowadays there is usually a major story with a secondary one shown along the top of the cover.

Also, for those who were wondering, the date on a magazine in most cases refers to the date that newsstands are supposed to stop showing it. Thus, last week's issue of newsweek is taken off stands on july 19, and next week's will be taken off july 26

I'm still using the original iPod and although I know that many people had problems with battery life on the original, I was wondering if there are any people who are still using the original? I had a battery problem for a few days before Apple released the firmware update that fixed the battery life issue.
Anyone else out there still using the original iPod? Any problems with it? Mine is working flawlessly.

I feel like this is the case - well I certainly HOPE it's the case. They've got competition in the market, if they fix things like the battery life and perhaps add a few features or make it smaller, people will buy these things in DROVES. Not like they're not doing it already...
If they only have one color (white), then they shouldn't have supply problems either. I think that the reason that the mini's been having supply problems is that they make it in 6 or so different colors, so people order it in, say, silver or pink or blue or what, and have to wait for them to make that particular color.

putting a click wheel on it. I am seriously hoping that this is just a product improvement (i.e. version 3.1 maybe), and the August rumors of an iPod update are true for a 4g iPod
And I don't think improving the battey life is worthy of a generation upgrade, that should have been done a long time ago. Apple really has to work hard if they want to maintain the iPods leader status, there is a lot of competition coming directly at them

I doubt they'll release these now and then another new one in a month... too many supply issues. If they didn't change the hardware (click wheel) that'd be one thing- a software update - but if they do that they'll piss a lot of people off as people upgrade to the newest one... don't want to release too many products too quickly. If they do it slowly they can get more people to buy them and maybe upgrade from one to the next.

yes, I agree with you. But maybe this is the new outer case design which will follow in the following genration, but the 4g could incorprate a color screen and updated firmware.
Also, this could just be a prototype for the next generation and Steve is using it in the cover shoot. Which could mean no new iPod on Monday, and following up in the article that new iPods are coming in August.
This would be much more Apple-like, and using the prototype in the cover shoot alludes to a New iPod without giving away any new design features.

Yes. Sony includes Windows only software to transcode to ATRAC3. Part of the inelegance of this solution is that transcoded music suffers a loss in quality, and it slows down the loading of the device. It will no doubt take hours and hours to copy all of your music over to the player thanks for the transcoding issue, rather than minutes for a straight copy.

WHY would you have to buy a new iPod? If you have one, whats wrong with that - it won't suddenly stop working!?
And now I have to buy a new iPod? Man This is getting expensive. Here is to hoping they come do in fact come out soon! Although if there is no knew features, I may have to pass
Can we get AirTunes into an iPod?

Well...I'm going to be buying a powerbook in the next few weeks and was upset about not taking advantage of the cram and jam deal (I've got a 15GB).
So....I put up my 2 month old 15GB on ebay for a 1 day auction. I figure its worth the risk...considering the drop in value they may have once the new ones come out. So, now I guess I'll pick up a new one when they get released :D

I ordered my 17" and 20GB Thursday. I am calling Monday to see if they can switch it to the new model. I think my straights are more dire than yours :) I don't see why it would be a problem for me, because it saves everyone the hassle of the return process etc... For all I know they are going to just ship me that one anyway. We'll find out.
Apple seems to like me, I was one of those lucky Powerbook "call-back" customers you heard about the other day. $300 extra off + Edu discount + Cram and Jam.

This iPod release could be just so apple can sell the iPods more cheaply... there is more competition now that a year ago. Apple need to compete without letting the iPods seems overly expensive.. It worked before because there weren't comparable devices.. but this has changed.
Additionally, maybe they've been able to increase the battery life.. which is one major weakness of the iPod when compared against other MP3 players... and has of course recieved alot of bad press.
If there aren't any software changes, then it'll be a pretty boring release.

Well there was the rumour the other day that Apple was calling back customes who logged in with their Apple ID, put an order together for a Powerbook or iBook and never completed it. Later that week they would get calls back from Apple giving them "special deals."
So normally I just go on the Apple Store website and randomly add things together until I have the funds to buy them. So then my student loans became active and at the same time, my parents offered to let me us a credit card. So I got a price for them while logged in with my Apple ID after reading the rumour and the next day they called my house asking if I intended to purchase the order I had saved and that they would give me an additional $300 off to order it that night. So I did.
Edit: http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=542 is the story. I found it on MacBlog, which is a new "everything you need" Mac site. It's http://macblog.org .

Indeed you are lucky. But I wouldn't expect to get a 4g iPod with Cram and Jam. The terms of the deal seem specifically to refer to the current stock of 3g iPods (and not including the Minis). People have said it elsewhere, but you'd think the reason they offer deals like this is to clear inventory of old stock.

Oh well, there will be a 5G and 6G sometime down the road I can get. A 3G will be enough for me in University.

The cram and jam deal actually says "with the purchase of any Apple Ipod (except mini:...)" and it lists the models for all the mini's - so because it didn't say anything about it having to be a 3G Ipod, do you think we can apply this cram and jam to the new Ipods? Either way, do we know that they will be available on Monday? Or even before the Cram and Jam deal ends? Maybe it's just a press release about the new Ipods but they won't be available for shipping (or purchasing) until (conveniently) after September 25, when the Cram and Jam ends. Boo urns...

I e-mailed my friendly nieghbourhood Apple CSR (who took my order from me, apparently he checks his e-mail at 1:30am on Saturdays). I said:
Hi XXXXXX,
I placed an order ( XXXXXXXXX ) for a Powerbook, iPod (20gb), iSight and battery with you last Thursday. I heard from various sources that Apple is introducing a new form factor iPod on Monday as advertised in the article in Newsweek (see attached file). If Apple does introduce this new iPod formfactor/generation, would it be possible for my order to be changed from the current model to the new one of equivalent features (size, with Dock, price isn't too much of an issue) and still be able to use the cram and jam promotion?
Here is the link to the file on the newsweek website:
http://msnbcmedia.msn.com/i/msnbc/Sections/Newsweek/Components/Photos/mag/040726_issue/040717_COVER.jpg
And in case it is taken down, I have attached it within this e-mail.
I hope it won't be a problem to get the new form factor with my order, as it says the current shipping date for my iPod is estimated at July 27th.
Thank you for any help, I don't expect a reply until this is officially announced by Apple anyway.
<040717_COVER.jpg>
And got the reply...
I will give yo a call on monday, until then we will see.

Edit: Took out a random P that somehow got in there, damn Microsoft Wireless keyboard! And as a note, I XXXXXXX'd his identity because I don't know if his job would be on the line for this or not, so we'll play it safe :)

Anyways, we'll see how great these iPods are monday.

Yup, going into first year. Fresh out of highschool but I already have a very strong portfolio. I did print and web design for a local company, won an international web design competition, gold at Skills Canada for graphic design and many, many more things. I have a minimal portfolio I made in about 2 hours for a project on my website which you can get to through my profile.

where are the specs!?!?! Why would apple announce a new ipod without telling people all the specs and new features to go with it??? Anyone else think that apple will make it available tomorrow for order on the website?
another thing, did macrumors find this article first? I'm pretty sure this was the case, but there are a few other websites out there trying to take the credit, and i think thats not fair! Can anyone varify this at all?
