So does this tool actually unlock a 3.1 or 3.1.2 iPhone 3Gs that has never been JB or Unlocked!!
It seems to say that, but I would love to hear if anyone on the forum has done this and how simple it was.
I am sat in the UAE with shiny white iPhoen 3Gs desperate to take out my O2 sim.....

If your iPhone (3G or 3GS) has the stock 3.1 or 3.1.2 firmware from Apple, then you can't software unlock because the baseband has been updated through the stock firmware. You can only jailbreak.
PS: "this tool" (PwnageTool) only jailbreaks. It is ultrasn0w that does the unlocking.

PwnageTool jailbreaks your iPhone. It does not unlock. I have never unlocked my iPhone because I'm fine with my AT&T account/service....
iPhone Hacks will provide help for you to unlock your phone. You must JB before you unlock.....so you should proceed with PwnageTool 3.1.4 to restore your iPhone to the latest firmware....v3.1.2.

i don't quite understand the dev-teams spiel about DFU mode..
If you’re already jailbroken (by whatever means), you don’t need to mess around with DFU mode at all. Just create (or get from a friend) your custom IPSW and Option-Restore (Shift-Restore on Windows) to it via iTunes. Don’t enter DFU mode at all.
I have an iPhone 3G which is currently running 3.0 JB'b with redsn0w and unlocked via ultrasn0w.
If i want to update to 3.1.2 i don't re-jailbreak?
I thought i'd have to use pwnagetool to create the custom ipsw from the official 3.1.2 ipsw?

that just means if you want to upgrade to 3.1.2 then you must ensure you use a custom made ipsw from pwnagetool

You still have to create a custom ipsw but you on't have to go through the whole hold the power button for 5 seconds, power and home, just home blah blah blah anymore as it works from normal... hence no need for DFU mode...

so what you're saying is, they've made the entire process a lot easier?
I'm sure the GUI will reflect this as before it told you to hold down power for 10 seconds blah blah... but i'm assuming now it won't do that...
So essentially, just follow the instructions in the GUI right?
Might have to try this then :)

AFAIK, blackra1n has nothing to do with the logo reappearing. Upgrading to 3.1.2, including the new baseband, accomplished this.

I used Pwnage to upgrade my 3GS from the 3.0jb to the 3.0.1jb. I'm planning to use pwnage to upgrade to 3.1.2 now as well but I have a couple of questions. I understand that by using pwnage the baseband is not upgraded and the ability to unlock is preserved; however, what if I don't care about a future unlock? What (if anything) am I losing by not upgrading my baseband? There must be a reason that the baseband changes when you upgrade to the official 3.1.2 via iTunes, right? What is that reason?

make sure you uncheck activate phone if you have an official carrier, like AT&T for the US. Otherwise you will get no service when you put on your firmware as the phone needs to activate via itunes if its for an official carrier.

I have to ask again -
Is there any downside to upgrading the baseband if I have no intention of unlocking the phone? Just jailbreaking?
Is there some upside to upgrading the baseband? Like better reception? Fewer dropped calls?
Thanks.

By staying on 3.0.1 you are using the same baseband as the rest of us on 3.2.1, so I'm not sure what advantage you are gaining.

Question: On one of the last screens, it asks if this iphone has been pwned before. I checked "No" and then built the ipsw. Is this okay even though my phone is pwned? iClarified said if you're not sure, check no, so I'm assuming it really doesnt make a difference. Right??
Update: Answered my own question. Did the jailbreak, went perfectly. JB in just under 10 minutes and now I'm reloading my apps.

I guess that makes sense. I wish I knew exactly what the new baseband does so I could decide if I want it. If I did want it, I guess I could just upgrade to the official 3.1.2 via iTunes and then use pwnage to jb; however, I'll probably just stick with the old baseband for now even though I don't currently have a use for it (I'm with AT&T). I understand that you can use your phone on T-Mobile if you're unlocked but is that it? Can you use the phone in Europe if you're unlocked? I know T-Mobile is the only other carrier that can be used in the US.
As far as battery %, you should be able to enable that within the settings on the phone itself - it's a stock feature that can be toggled on and off.

I can also confirm that this has worked on a 3GS and another 3G that I have done.
I can also confirm that the following applications are working:
SBSettings
Netatalk
OpenSSH
Ultrasn0w - working on Vodafone UK
Winterboard
Also did the full update for Cydia with no problems.
No problems so far, except I lost my Netatalk SBSettings toggle, but I have that back now.

Build the custom ipsw on your mac, then put the custom ispw on your pc and do the restore to the new custom ispw. Then update from backup once complete. Many restore as a new phone, but you can certainly restore from backup. I did that exact process today (MB Pro --> PC--> iPhone)

The DevTeam does not put out tools that don't work as claimed.
That's why their stuff isn't rushed out and undergoes a hefty field test before they release it.

That's the feature - it jailbreaks your phone even if it wasn't jailbroken before. The previous version of Pwnage only worked if your phone was already jailbroken.

I had a similar message, I noticed that I still had PwnageTool opened up, I closed PwnageTool and went back into iTunes and did option + click on restore and it worked without a hitch..

No and not that I know of. If you dont plan on ever unlocking then upgrading the BB means nothing to you.
I am sure this is a stupid question, but with JB give me tethering somehow, or allow me to tether with some other file?
Thanks.

hello,
I have a 3gs which I have never jb'in, I tried to jb tonight with the latest pwnage tool. I was told that I didn't need to be online. Everything went well I am going from memory, but I first was able to get into recovery mode. But I got a 1600 error when I tried to restore to the pwned 3.1.2 ipsw? Then my computer, like I said wasn't online, and iTunes was saying I needed to be connected to restore. I just got back from the library and restored to 3.1.2 non jb. Just wondering what I did wrong, I know I had tried rerunning pwnage tool but couldn't get into recovery mode. One question I have is can I just open iTunes option click restore and then restore to the custom ipsw I had created? Or should I run pwnage again and go through the process of entering recovery mode, i.e. can I just use the custom ipsw that pwnage said I created successfully? I used redsnow before, and could use some advice on a 1600 error, like should I try to redownload the firmware? Any help?

I know that a while back (i restored after 3.1 since it was elfin up, lots of glitches, unstable..) you had to use an external USB hub because there was some kind of software deal that would cause the phone to go into DFU mode. There was a work around (type some commands in terminal), but that was risky.. sorry, i forget exactly what it was, but it was for 2.x.x firmware...
I still use the external USB hub....that could be the problem..

so i have a 3gs from launch day which i jailbroke on 3.0. i then put on a cydia app (rotation toggle i think) that was not 3gs compatible (oops) and it effed up my phone so i had to do a full restore in itunes to unjailbrake and everything. i have not jailbroken since and my phone is now on 3.1.2. i have a mac and i would like to jailbrake only, no unlock. can someone give me instructions or tell me what is different between when i jailbroke the first time compared to now.
thanks

If you have no need to ever unlock, just use the dev teams pwnage tool, or blackra1n, to jailbreak.

I have to ask again -
Is there any downside to upgrading the baseband if I have no intention of unlocking the phone? Just jailbreaking?
Yes. Non-unlockable BB reduces the re-sale value of your iPhone by some $50-$100 bucks.

I jailbroke my 3.1 3GS last night with PT 3.1.4 and everything went flawlessly. I'm on an AT&T contract so I don't care about unlocking, so I just made sure to uncheck Activate the Phone in PT. Everything works fine after the JB!

Is it still advisable to set-up as a new phone after restoring to the Pwned firmware? Kinda hoping that's not necessary as I'd like to retain App data (i.e. HoldEm scoring, etc.)

Some people say it's best to set it up as a new phone but I've always restored from a backup and I've never had a problem. That doesn't mean I won't run into problems at some point in the future, but until I do I'll continue to restore from backup. It's nice to be able to retain all of that app info.
Another thing you can consider is AppBackup - that will back up all of your app data. If you do this, you should be able to copy the backup files from your phone back to your computer, set up your phone as new, and then copy the files back to your phone. I'm not 100% sure of the exact process, files, etc. but it should be doable.

Worked ok. I went to sleep after restoring my iPhone as a new phone and after 3 hours, the battery drained to 62% with no usage. I had the same thing happen with blackra1n.
I'm back on 3.0 once again.

my girlfriend's iPhone is just as you said. However I got/get outstanding (for an iPhone) battery life with JB'ed 3.1 and 3.1.2 with mine. Not sure why that would be the case as we both have 3G's and I did the same procedure, used the same custom firmware on both...doesn't make sense.

Are you taking about the message that says along the lines "Do you have a phone that can be activated through itunes? Yes, NO?"
anyways I said yes, but I'm not getting any signal after restoring in itunes and activating it
I had to restore to Apple's latest firmware from itunes.
Did I do something wrong? can I still jailbreak If Im already on the latest firmware from apple?

for all the people that has done this JB on 3.1.2, how are you guys liking it so far? anything better than 3.0.1? hows battery life? anymore coma issues? aside from all those, how about features like tethering? i know the carrier tethering hack doesnt work anymore right? but how about pdanet?
the JB process seems fairly easy. most of the JB apps work? can anyone confirm if backgrounder, weather icon, five icon dock, privacy, make it mine, reflective dock works?
does changing dock background via SSH still work the same way?

if your not looking to unlock the handset to use with another carrier then no you have not done anything wrong, if your looking to unlock the device you will have to jailbreak and run fuzzyboard to see if you can downgrade the baseband. If you cant downgrade the baseband and need it unlocked well then unfortunately you will be stuck.

Build the custom ipsw on your mac, then put the custom ispw on your pc and do the restore to the new custom ispw. Then update from backup once complete. Many restore as a new phone, but you can certainly restore from backup. I did that exact process today (MB Pro --> PC--> iPhone)
Cool thanks for the info! I will try it now. Wish me luck :)

Good question, but I've never tried it or read about it. Are you absolutely sure you used the right firmware for your custom ipsw creation? I've seen some that picked the 3G [s] version when they needed the 3G version. You should check.

You're not supposed to Activate the phone if you're on AT&T. You would only Hacktivate the phone if you weren't on AT&T. Rebuild your custom firmware and next time uncheck Activate and when you're done the phone will have a signal. Voila!
