Macbook ejects disks within 5 seconds after insertion

I have a Macbook I just bought used. It's a 2nd gen, before Santa Rosa.

I've tried inserting a bunch of different disks, can't get any of them to stay in.
Any ideas on what I can test or some way to fix it without purchasing a new drive?

I have a similar issue where the disc goes in, spins up, the lens makes an attempt to read, and then spins down and ejects after 10 seconds. I took apart the drive and it looks absolutely fine inside. The lens is clean. No signs of dust. 😕
