Any information available on the release date for the U.S.?
I am eagerly awaiting it's arrival here in the USA. My iPhone's internal A-GPS hasn't worked properly since June '09, so I am in need of the mount's internal GPS chip. I have the Tomtom app, but it's useless until I get the mount. :(

Is there a suction cup on the OPPoS?
How can it be transferred between different vehicles if you have to stick something to the dash or windscreen using a adhesive fix not a suction one?

So i notice the car kit is £99 and the app is on the store for £59.. does that mean you dont get the app with the kit? definately pricey if this is the case considering your not paying for the hardware that you would get with a normal tomtom.

C'mon mate, how can anyone expect an honest review after that, easily your poorest video (I have followed them all). You criticized the packaging before it was even opened and refuse to read the manual. Is that the volume button?
I plan on buying this the day it becomes available in Canada (there, now you know someone that is waiting). I'll gladly give an unbiased opinion and demonstration. If it's junk I'll tell you, if it's great I'll say so.
Having a preconception of the product before you've even opened it up does nobody any good. Why would anyone take your review seriously?

I simply can't wait to spend £99 of my hard earned income on a piece of plastic that every thief in London will recognise and want to steal/sell for a tidy sum. I would have to remove it from my windscreen every time I leave my vehicle unattended. Anyone leaving this crap on display in their vehicle is asking for a broken window.

I'm sorry if you feel this way. However, if you look back through the video - the only thing I actually criticise is the PRICING aspect, not the product quality and nor the 'packaging' as you state.
No doubt - its going to be a great unit (still to test it) and if it isn't - I'll be posting this thing to the TomTom HQ with some of my own *****. However, just by looking at the packaging - that won't be happening. One can easily tell from the packaging that this is premium stuff.
Again, my main gripe is with pricing and nothing else.

In all fairness - a thief would most likely take a standalone unit than a simple cradle. I can't see thieves going around cars looking for specific TomTom Car Kit cradles. Yes, if they come across it - they may be interested... depending on how much they know about it (price wise).
TomTom units are most likely to get stolen, and they do - Glasgow is notorious for this (in certain areas).

Just finished with the review. Video is being 'stabilised' through iMovie. Real time car demos meant that the car was (obviously) moving hence the camera was affected.
Some words to clarify or sum up:
TomTom works REALLY well with the car kit. Deffo a HUGE improvement. Very little or no lag.
Easy to mount to the windscreen - very strong and robust (won't fall off). Like the fact that its quite flexible in the way YOU want it viewed. Different angle orientations etc. Easier viewing angles for the driver is ALWAYS a plus point.
You need to use the bluetooth to pair the TomTom car unit device.
YES, third party apps work - I used/demo'd Co-Pilot Live 8. Although I didn't see an improvement in the GPS signal with Co-Pilot - you do get the extra advantage with the speakers and charging facility (ideal for long distance drives).
The speaker is amazingly loud and clear. You can adjust it using the dial. Huge bonus.
Two year warranty included with this device.

What a great unboxing video - Honest and to the point saying what were were all thinking and expecting.
Great product but rip off price, I can see TomTom's angle here but I whole heartedly disagree with the pricing which is a quite frankly is a rip off.
Its a real shame as TomTom are actually pushing customers away with these kinds of tactics.
you can pick up a TomTom 1 for £60-£70 on the net why would you go near this? makes no sense?!
Sure it will sell to people who follow technology and enjoy there gadgets but even these people wont be happy buying something which should cost £30 or £60 with app - no one likes getting ripped off.
Saying that TomTom them selves could do with updating there whole system with a few new fresh ideas... the whole thing while brilliant is getting slightly stale to say the least!

Yes by "British" I was referring to English and England. I didn't want to confuse the laymens in here too much lol. In America we often refer to an English accent as a British accent.
I'm sorry for derailing to thread so much. I didn't know this was such a hot topic lol! :p
On topic: I have been testing the new "MapQuest Navigator" GPS app and "MotionX GPS Drive" app. So far I like the MapQuest app better, and I have been wondering if it would really be able to work with this TomTom kit. It would only be worth it to me because I don't have an in car charger or anything to hook it up to my stereo yet. The TomTom kit might be a nice universal solution for that. However, even with my iPhone 3G alone and the built in GPS chip, it has been very accurate with navigation.

Pps any thoughts on the adhesive disk, stickyness to dash then firmness of cradle to disk?
Ppps is the iPod sound better through the cradle to Stereo or through 3.5 mm of iPhone?
Pppps does the volume of iPhone change iPod volume when using cradle 3.5mm As does with iPhone 3.5 mm?

Speak for yourself.....I am in The USA and I refer to an English accent as an English accent. Maybe I hang out with an educated crowd, but I don't know anyone that calls an English accent a British accent. Then again I know the difference between Great Britain and Ireland and a Scottish accent and an English accent.

i have great luck with google maps also.... i've got gmaps, motionX Drive & mapquest.... and it just seems that inevitably I come back to google maps for POI in an area..... i think a lot of people look for the different views 2d/3d(i'm not a 3d view fan anyway) all the perks you can get with the other "gps" programs.....
I like the dock idea for the charging, line out, internal speaker and it would fit perfectly where i have my phone mounted... but $100bones is to much right now....

Thanks for posting the video. It assures me that this is really NOT the product I'd buy. I need a long arm for the windshield, because my car is a Dodge Caliber, the distance from the windshield glass and the dashboard is huge. If I'd use this, I wouldn't see any street names and ****. Besides, the price is ridiculously pathetic.

I've defiantly noticed an improvement. It's now as good as my old tomtom. The improvement is most noticeable when i was driving around london.
The quality of the unit is very good too. Speaker is loud and clear. My only criticism (and i may just not know how to change it) is that, i couldn't find a way to change the volume of the aux out? Does anyone else know how? It's too loud and comes out distorted from my stereo.

Thanks for the demo, but the lag on this video seems just as bad as the lag I experience without a TT car kit.
@The Samurai, is this really as good as it gets with the car kit? Can't believe the app alone was actually worse than this. Any chance you could borrow a second iPhone and do a side by side comparison?
At the moment this looks like an even bigger waste of money than I first thought.

In the review there's a point in time where the sync is made via bluetooth. Anyone know whether this is for the audio portion and/or GPS? Wondering if with this "free app" they will have this functionality? Basically what I am getting at is would this be able to use with an external bluetooth receiver? It seems almost as though it could be like the RoqyGPS app with the ability to enter in a pin code for the GPS receiver. Anyone catch my drift on this or have any input?

Forgive the duplication (posted comment on the FAQ YT vid), but what is the handsfree phone support like on the car kit.
I seem to recall TT making mention of this, but details of what it is doing are somewhat scarce.
Is it just using the built in Voice Control via Bluetooth, much like other headsets would do? This could explain the shipping delay as they needed OS 3.1 to enable the Voice Control stuff via bluetooth headsets.
Why do I ask? Well, they are introducing a ban on using phones while driving, just like the UK, and as such you're only going to be allowed to use handsfree electronic devices whilst driving, thus I've been looking at handsfree options and I'm wondering what the car kit provides.
Perhaps the TT app has some special options for hands free calling, something similar to how to the Parrot MKi9x000 range of products work.
Any chance you could give this a try if possible, or if anyone else could comment I'd appreciate it.

I was hanging out for this car kit but that was my one concern. I have a bluetooth kit which allows me to call people using the touchscreen in my car.
I just want the car kit to call out directions and improve the lag, not become my only bluetooth unit.
So due to this one "feature" that I dont want, no car kit and no tomtom app.

Here is the deal: My friend has an old iphone and hates it, so she is going to deactivate and get a new phone. She is giving the old iphone to me, the downside is that I wont be able to go on the internet or anything. I heard I could upgrade the old iphone for like 10 bucks so it would be able to download apps. Can it be upgraded, if so, how?

Iam interested in getting the new 3g apple iphone on july 11th. I will be a new at&t customer and I'am wondering how much per month I will have to pay for just the minium amount of minutes, which I believe is 450 minutes for $39.99, and the data plan for the iphone to work. Any info will be helpful. Thanks!

For less than half the price of this overpriced junk I got:
A better mount (Kensington Dash)
A better GPS receiver (stronger signal, bluetooth wireless)
and roxyGPS to use it with my iPhone.
And it works just as good, if not better with both TomTom AND Navigon.
You might as well as throw $100 bucks down the toilet. That's pretty much exactly what your doing by buying this.

Update..... I emailed TomTom about the bluetooth issue and got this back:
Dear Mr ,
Thank you for contacting TomTom Customer Support
Your reference for your query is x
The Kit physically connects to the phone there is no bluetooth connection.
With Best Regards
The TomTom Customer Support Team
Hmmm..... now I dont know what to believe

Hi
Here's the scenario.
You've got your phone docked onto the TomTom car kit unit, using bluetooth. Your driving along and you want to make a phone call. You quit the TomTom (or whatever sat nav application your using) and make the call. When you hit the green 'call button' - it gives you three options; 'TomTom Car Kit', iPhone and something else. So I presume, if you have more bluetooth devices connected - it will give you a further list?
Edit: i'll put up a short video or a picture up in the morning to reflect this.

Strong words coming from the owner of a Dodge Caliber.

100% agree with what you said on the review
Its not a bad product, its just expensive ( due to the "all in one nature" + apple tax)
If you can't afford it stop complaining about it, but it seems like a good product
Especially for those who have already paid for an iPhone GPS software, and don't want the
added clutter of a standalone unit
Speakerphone works correctly
GPS signal is improved
Mounting dock looks secure and allows for rotation
thanks for the review :apple:

Has anyone tested if the CarKit works with another navigation app? I know that it should (tomtom said it before and I saw the notice that is in the box) but I was just wondering if someone has tested if it works with the navigon app.
Oh, by the way: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THyTnt00b5I
No offense (really not!) but it matches this thread... Always makes me smirk...

The challenge is knowing whether Navigon (and other apps) are actually utilizing/interacting with the GPS chip in the TT Car Kit.

Oh, it is definitely interacting with the Car Kit Chip: If you put the iPhone out of the Kit during navigation the GPS signal is lost and it takes some time until it is back again.
