View Full Version : Colored iPods?

MacRumors
Jul 18, 2004, 12:25 AM
A few reports indicate that Best Buy has received new product codes for new iPods to be available in August and September:

Purple iPod (15GB)
Yellow iPod (20GB)
Orange iPod (40GB)

Presumably this could be an abbreviated list, but may hint toward color iPods associated with the impending (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2004/07/20040717201356.shtml) release.

sweet. I also hope it comes in white. It should, steve has a picture of him holding one. I'll have my eyes and wallet on that purple one.

White will definitely be included. I do not
imagine that colors will be restricted to
designated hard drive capacities though....

why does tonight feel more like June 26 than July 18?

Perhaps it refers to the color of the backlight?

Is it lavender or silver? I zoomed in on the Newsweek cover and it looks like what ThinkSecret described (a silver wheel). Lavender would be cool though.

I hope they got rid of the mirror finish. Too difficult to preserve and likely adds needlessly to the weight. I hope the the clickwheel is the only metal thing on this.. and if so the metal wheel will match each plastic case color. A mirror-finish apple logo on the back would be cool tho.

I'll take one in the "Orange" variety, please. (Also from Apple Store, rather than BB)

It's pretty clear from TS's pre-Newsweek story that the color rumors refer to new Mini colors. (Maybe new capacities too?) NOT to the regular iPod.

The new iPod's wheel just looks grey to me. Might be silver--not colored.

Even the Newsweek article itself says the new iPods are only in white.

Why not? We love flaunting just how important we are by what we wear and drive. Why not by what we listen to our music with?

Why wouldn't you buy it from Bestbuy? Bestbuy doesn't make the ipod, Apple does. And doesn't bestbuy have that 4 year protection plan? Apple store only has 2 year and it's most expensive than Bestbuy's 4 year (and they just give you a new one if you have trouble, no questions asked)

The people who work at bestbuy don't know anything, but if you are savvy about the item you are getting you don't need their help, just ask them to get one for you.

I'll second the Best Buy Protection Plan. Had two different iPod purchases already replaced with new units.

Well, we know there is definitely a new iPod being released this week, but I guess the color question still remains up in the air. I'm glad though that the iPod Steve is displaying on the cover of NewsWeek is white, as it would be a shame if they got rid of the classic color. If they bring out other colors though, by all means, do it. I'll always be happy with my classic white one though.

according to Newsweek, no it's not:

Color. Fuggedaboutit. Despite rumors to the contrary, the wide-bodies are still as pure as the driven snow.

Ah yes, so it would seem then. Well who knows, maybe Apple will introduce color to the iPod line-up when the 60 GB iPod is ready to go in a couple months...

I think the bigger picture we're all missing is that these colored models could very well be the hPod coming out. We've already seen a colored full-sized iPod in Carly Fiorina's (sp) hand and the video didn't lend itself to tell which color it was. It seems to me to make sense to give the lower-end, smaller sized old feature set as it stands to HP and let them market it to their hearts content, since the Apple version will be the new revision of it. Then the colors make sense, as does the early stock #'s for Best Buy being roughly around the time that the hPod is due to debut.

How's about that for something to chew on?

It appears that the 15 GB model is going to be dropped, so that would discount that part of the rumor, but I also don't think Apple would only release specific models in certain colors. If someone wanted a purple iPod, they should be able to get a purple iPod whether they want a 20 GB model or a (future) 60 GB model, as an example.

Colors would be great, but just make sure the classic white iPods are still available too!

Paris, here colored iPods come...

Not so sure about the 15GB model, they phased that out.. It will probably be 20, 40, and 60. I would definatly get a lavender or light yellow one... or maybe a steel/aluminum colored one... However, I reaaalllllyyy like the snow colored one with a grey wheel.

Carly announced that they are "HP Blue". So they are the exact color they look like they are in those shots.

Also, she was holding up the new-defunct four-button iPod, which makes me think it was just a prop. I don't think Apple would upgrade their line and then reintroduce the old body style.

I was just in the local Best Buy (South Portland, Maine) and saw that the case where they usually keep iPods was completely empty, except for new shelf tags. There was a tag for a 15GB for $249, a "Purple 15GB" for $299, a "Yellow" (I think) 20GB and an "Orange" 40GB. They also had shelf tags for the recently announced 4G 20 & 40 GB pods.
These were regular, printed, stock tags and appeared to be marking shelves waiting for stock. I think it was the tag for the 4G 20GB that said "as advertised" on it.
Is this maybe a Best Buy error that has gone so far as to have the merchandising area set up, or is there maybe something really coming?

That's not true. If it has happened to you, you're lucky. Read the contract, though and you run into some significant complications if the product becomes discontinued. Moreover, I've had a bad experience with that fraud of a warranty.

Have not had an issue with replacement so far. Unless Best Buy has changed the terms recently.

I happen to work at Best Buy (a few of us do know what we're talking about btw) and when I went into work this morning someone had put a price tag in our display case for a 20 gig yellow iPod. I have the price tag, so either someone at Best Buy is a complete moron (there are a few of those as well) and sent us a non-existant price tag or there will be colored iPods coming.

Hmm, this is an interesting bit of info to support the "Colored iPod/Best Buy" rumor. My gut feeling is that there won't be colored iPods (otherwise why wouldn't they have been anmnounced last week along with the 4G iPods all at once?), but perhaps there's more to this rumor than I thought. I guess we'll see... I still don't see it making much sense to introduce the new iPods but not to introduce colored one's while they were at it - what benefit is there in doing that?

I also work at best buy...and I was wondering why the case had a tag for a purple iPod...I thought it was a misprint or something, but I guess not.

The protection plan on the iPods is very good...think about it, if the battery dies, you pay $99 to get it replaced, unless its under the protection plan, in which you would pay nothing to get a new comparable model.

Could be color coding for the Big Box stores. One to give them something that might drive sales. But also help their underpaid Customer Service workers from taking back the "wrong" iPod.

I used to work at Best Buy. I used to put up those price tags. I can not count the number of times I had to make correction tags after the system screwed up. Something Stated as Blue when it was really green. incorrect specs. etc. It doesn't mean anything.

You guys are relying on Best Buy for you rumors ? Come on now. You should know better.

I'm not so sure I would ever want a colored iPod, I'm just so used to the original white color. But I think it would be a very good idea for apple to make them as I'm sure many people would like the extra personalization it would provide.

Colorware PC doesn't charge ANYTHING extra to buy a colored iPod from them when compared to buying a white iPod from Apple. I would never want a colored iPod, but if someone does, he/she can.

Right now, the iPods are 3Gs, but colored 4Gs will surely hit the shelves soon.

I'm in the process of getting my new 4G iPod in the mail and never understood why Apple couldn't / wouldn't produce an aluminum or brushed titanium back instead of the shiny and scratchy plastic...

If Apple were to claim that the reason they avoided such a metal backing was because of weight factors, just look at the iPod Mini or the Motorola v60 phones... they're metal and lightweight.

I have no choice but to get a spiffy case.

As in, new 15" Powerbooks? The "new" ones that came out in April?

Or 15 new [product name]?

Or the 15 gig iPods (discontinued, I thought)?

I thought about this too. The way they're pushing the iMac / iPod combo, I'd have thought they'd make the metal look similar.

I personally wanted shiny chrome as the iMac foot ... now that I think about it, though, I just want brushed metal on the back of the iPod. :)

I've never had a problem with Best Buy's plan. I come in, say it doesn't work. They look at it, see it doesn't work. They tell me they don't have the product anymore to replace it, I say then give me the next generation and I'll pay for the price difference if their is one (usually isn't). I walk away happy with a newer product.

My reading is that if the iPod 20gb goes from $300 to $99 near the end of the warranty, that is all they are required to replace. Which is fine with me.

If the iPod was discontinued during that time by Best Buy they will replace with a "like model". Though with a computer I had they gave me a credit for what I paid for it, and was able able to buy an even better one.
