If it's for AT&T and you don't care about updating the baseband (unlocking) then you can just update with iTunes to 3.1.2 and then use BlackRa1n to jailbreak. It aparently does it in a couple of seconds.

Well i have a 2G. Do i even need a custom IPSW? I dont think i have to worry about a basebamd update but i want to make sure since i am already unlocked. I also heard that blackra1n doesnt have a hacktivate so if we use that us t-mobile users could have a tough time activating? Or no?

These ipsw (upgrade files) are for those devices who are using the ultrasn0w or yellowsn0w and rely on unlocked iphone SIMPLY SAID : people who have UNLOCKED iphones and want to upgrade to OS 3.1.2 and jailbreak and don't want to lose there unlock can use these ipsw files to restore and jailbreak there iphone and BASEBAND will remain unchanged !! to make a call or use the SIM card with carrier that is not official carrier. With these custom .ipsw files for OS 3.1.2 the baseband of iPhone 3G and 3GS ius not changed which makes it possible to stay unlocked. these files are made with PwangTool 3.1.4 and you don't need to have a jailbreaked iphone these custom .ipsw files supports out of the box.
How to install :


SIMPLE :
FIRST always do a backup of your iphone or ipod touch
Download the files (are RAR) and open them and drag and drop the folder to desktop
just open iTunes and connect iPhone and then hit RESTORE + SHIFT and browse to the custom made .ipsw files you downloaded
Now begin restoring thats all !!
When restore finished you can now restore from backup to get all informations you had

This was the reason for the larger partitions...... But you don't need the large partition anymore because Cydia doesn't install programs into the root folder anymore (I think Installer was the only one to do that). So setting aside 1GB is kinda a waste.

I'm using the 500MB version on my phone and my girls phone with no issues at all.

You can just use BlackRa1n... It's much faster... Or you can download the second one and restore to that.

Dev Team DEFINITELY warns against downloading these. Especially since this is split into two files and you'll be joining it. One file corruption and you're SOL.

In download they could be corrupted. Or in joining the files. There's no checksum for the actual IPSW.

You'd probably be fine using them... I just wouldn't do it myself.

The same thing can be said for anything you download, also when you are extracting the files, if there is an error, it will let you know during the extraction. Its safe as can be :) but to each his own.

Keep in mind, this is pretty much the only way someone with only access to a windows computer can jailbreak if they want to preserve their baseband for unlock-ability.

just used the custom ipsw to upgrade 3GS from 3.0 to 3.1.2 - just restored in iTunes (no DFU mode required since it was already jailbroken). went smoothly.

P.S. used Windows 7 and iTunes 9
