I have a decent size library of movies that i store on a old PM G4. It streams to my xbox 360 via ethernet using connect 360. I ripped all my movies with MTR, and encoded them with handbrake using the xbox 360 preset. 2kbps, 5.1 audio channel. But none of my movies are in surround sound. I use a optical audio cable out of my 360. I have dolby 5.1 enabled on my 360 as well.

Do i need to encode them differently or is it just not possible?

It sounds like the problem is either to do with Connect360 or the Xbox. Perhaps Connect360 does not stream the 5.1 sound, or the Xbox only plays streamed video in stereo. Maybe you will get a better answer if you ask this question on an Xbox360 forum?
