Is there anyway to do this if you are already jailbroken? (Without using the pwnage tool.)

you have to do what the post says. Patch the commcenter and upload it to your phone, ensuring that the permissions are properly set.
edit: doesn't work. I patched the commcenter, the hash matched, replaced it, but tethering disappears when you try to actually connect.

working great for me, usb and bt. had to reboot the phone after applying the stealthbravo 6.0 ipcc.
make sure you correct the permissions after you put commcenter back onto the phone, not before.

OK, I find myself not able to get this to work on my 3G (usually I can bluff my way thru these things)
Can someone break down the method a little bit for a Mac. Feeling pretty Noobie at this point.
I use Terminal and start with entering "bspatch"
Supposedly that puts Mac terminal into bspatch mode.
After that I cannot get anything happening.

You feeling noobie?!?! lol, with all the advice you dish out its about time :D
copy commcenter off of the phone to the same folder as the patch file, then in terminal enter:
bspatch CommCenter CommCenter-hacked CommCenter.patch
it will create a new file "CommCenter-hacked" i renamed the original to "-orig" then took the "-hacked" off. copy the new commcenter back to the phone, then SSH in and fix permissions. apply the ipcc, reboot, and tether should work.
make sure you download the patch for the 3g and not the 3gs.
hope this helps

this might be your problem - @MuscleNerd "here for the 3G" link pointing to 3GSs
it should be fixed now.

OK, well I think I fried the phone
Won't reboot
Followed the directions, got the correct patch (had the wrong one before)
Modded command to bspatch CommCenter CommCenter-hacked CommCenter3g.patch
Fixed permissions
Well no reboot
Guess I should have quit after the 1st unsuccessful try.
Gotta try and revive the phone, later
Edit: I was lucky, I was able to SSH into the phone, yank out the revised files, 3 reboots and a couple of plug & unplugs to iTunes, I got the phone to start.
Don't know why but my phone absolutely HATES this mod.
Think I will wait a few days and see what happens to others with this.

I followed the instructions below from Andrew at thebeatmix.blogspot.com, and I have both Bluetooth and USB tethering working fine on my iPhone 3G (16GB) v3.1.2! (Thanks to Andrew for the instructions!)

Andrew said...
Works a treat on my iphone 3G in UK on O2.
Think some folks confused about where to find CommCenter, its on the iphone at /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/CoreTelephony.frameworks/Support/CommCenter
I used cyberduck to ssh to the phone, copy CommCenter to desktop, downloaded the patch,RENAMED the patch to remove letters 3G then put it on desktop, then in terminal ran
cd Desktop
bspatch CommCenter CommCenter-hacked CommCenter.patch
renamed it and uploaded it back to iphone with cyberduck, and also in cyberduck, right click the new CommCenter, info, and click permissions, set all on except other write.
hope this helps! cheers

I tried this and my Voicemail did not work!
It looks like I needed to fix the APN settings for voicemail.
Anyone knows where to fix that setting as I don't see that setting from the Settings tab.

Good luck, I just spent 2 hours "fixing" my phone so everything worked as it did before this hack.
If you installed the Benm (sp) hack, go to Settings/General/Network and there should be a carrier file option near the bottom, open it, then select remove.
Find a copy of the newest carrier settings IPCC (for me it was AT&T 5.6) and download it, click option + update (mac) or shift + update and install it.
Replace the modified CommCenter with the original one (hope you saved a copy)
Reboot the phone.
I even had to do a full reset of all network settings and reboot, several times.
Then calls to AT&T to reset my Visual Voicemail to "new" so I could set it up again like it was new.

I only removed the profile that I installed from Benm and I was back to normal. My VVM works, Phone works and Internet works! No issues!! :D

I've done this tethering mod twice in 2 days to my phone. Both times it did not like it.
The second time, getting it undone was much worse.
Don't know why my phones dislikes this, but since I really don't require it, I will avoid a 3rd try.
Why these phones do what they do is sometimes a mystery to me. There are also 2 Cydia apps that once installed on my phone, the icons disappear at the next re-spring, so who knows.

Two iPhones (3G and 3GS) both tether great but no visual voicemail.
Uninstalling the Ben hack restores voicemail but of course no tether.

Whoop whoop, so glad this has been hacked, i was really missing this when i upgraded.
SFTP'd using Cyberduck, patched the file on my mac, re-uploaded and ssh'd into to Chmod the file.
Rebooted the phone and i was able to go in and enable tethering. Works perfectly, no BenM hack required!
Very Happy :)

My VVM disappeared after the hack as well. But i just dialed into my voicemail from the phone, punched in my pin, confirmed there were no voicemails and then pressed * to disconnect.
Once I did that I went back into voicemail and was prompted to enter in my PIN. Just like that VVM was back.

Yea, I tried it, and it does not disrupt VVM, but for whatever reason, my phone just does not like tethering ?????
I can enable tethering, get the popup, but absolutely no tethering happens, don't get the blue tethering indicators in the status bar.

This method worked best. The myWi crashed my phone and resulted in me restoring it.
To add to the sinful repo: If it doesn't work the first time, reset your network settings and reboot. It worked for me then.
BTW: VVM, MMS, and tethering all worked nicely with this repo.

Use PwnageTool if you don't mind restoring / if your phone is unlocked using ultrasn0w and you want to keep it that way.
Use blackra1n if you already have 3.1.2 installed and don't want to loose anything. Blackra1n leaves your phone as is and just jailbreaks it.
BTW, I wrote up a tutorial for tethering on 3.1.2 a few days ago: http://appleguru.org/iPhoneTethering.html
