Your best bet is to just go and sign up (https://www.mac.com/WebObjects/Signup.woa/wa/trial?aff=consumer&aff=consumer&cty=US&lang=en&identifier=scplW1FlQSvC5X3J) for the trial.

The templates aren't great, but they aren't too bad. i mostly use mine to host some family photos. If you need anything more advanced though (PHP, SSI, etc.) then it is pretty limited. If you want to see a few templates got to my gallery (http://homepage.mac.com/garnerk/).
Like I said, I just use it to host some photo galleries of family stuff as I like the integration with iPhoto. I have an account with 1&1 for my other sites so i can do more advanced things.
PS the blog in my sig is on the .Mac account, but created with iBlog, not the .Mac templates.
