Speaker issue on iPhone 3GS

I have just noticed than when I cover the right speaker (at the bottom) of the iPhone, it doesn't affect the sound, but when I cover the left speaker, it drastically reduces the volume. I've not noticed this before so I was wondering if this is a problem with the iPhone or is it normal?

Read the stickies. The iPhone has only one speaker.
