Can anyone explain to me the difference between the two processors? I just bought the 24" iMac 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. I've noticed some new PCs on the market have brand new quad cores and are going for dirt cheap. What gives?

Simple version:
Core 2 Duo is dual-core. There are two 3.066 processors on one chip.

Core 2 Quad is quad-core. There are four processors on one chip.

The iMac uses the mobile version, i.e., same performance as any other Core 2 Duo at that clock speed but much lower wattage and heat output, and a bit more expensive.

Troll posts? He asked what gives? I answered his question, aiming for asking what's going on with Apple charging more while PC manufacturers are offering more power for less money. You're answer doesn't answer what gives, but instead describes quad core and core 2 duo.

The basically same 3.06ghz iMac squall20011 just paid $2,200 for has been available for 1-1/2 years with just minor updates. A very poor value.

Mainstream desktop Core 2 Duo at 3.0 GHz has been available since mid-2007. Today it's a Core i7 860 at those E6850 price points.

What was the $2200 high-end model yesterday is now the $1000 cheaper low-end model today!

I'd strongly suggest squall20011 return the iMac if its still within the 14 day period, and get the new model.
