Basically, if you want to find the right avatar, find whatever you have a passion/fondness for in the form of a picture and place it as your avatar. I basically said this to asurace, when he had no idea what to use with his avatar. Look at mine and mc68k's 'tar. We represent something about our user names on the forums for an avatar. It's not a bad idea at all.
BTW, way to go on 500.

something cool? its just like art and very subjective - what's cool is a matter of personal taste.
are there any on the forums now you like or don't like - thats a good start. also, what does you name stand for?

Another good place to start is what you do on your mac. I do graphics work and listen to music a lot on mine hence the iTunes avatar.

It came at 150*150 or something and i put it down to 40*40 to keep under the space limit (20k)...Because i didn't know if there was a way of doing it otherwise...
I think I'll go and get an icon from somewhere and use that...spidey up for grabs..

Yeah, that's what I thought, they are pretty slick and they'd be a great 'tar. Who ever wants them can take them. I had to work them a bit to get them as transparent gifs.
Joshlew, you need to have 500 posts to get an avatar - or win won of the avatar contests, but the contests won't be done again for 5 more months or even a year, depending on if we do one sooner or not.

which icon are you talking about, or all of them in general?
taft uses a modified version of an apple icon - color manager or some such, not sure.

I forgot that attachment don't show up in quotes. I meant the iTools logo avatar that you made, first one I think.
As for that one guy, to get an avatar you have to post 500 times.

Can anyone be bothered to do exactly this? It would look pretty cool IMO

just get image read up and rolling and play around with it, its not too hard.
another Icon that I didn't do anything with this the radar screen with iMacs on it, it would be really cool to animated that one.

I would try using ImageReady (http://www.adobe.co.uk/products/) or GifBuilder.

Mr. Anderson
Jul 24, 2002, 09:12 AM
all the avatars i've created - we're talking quite a few, 40+ by now - have been done in photoshop and image ready. However the first time around, before I even knew image ready I would use gifBuilder - which is share ware and works great - here's one of my old animated gifs I did 4 years ago - rendered in 3D by stratastudio pro and then converted over to a gif using photoshop and gifBuilder - it was before image ready was available.

ha, mmm - from your sig?
nice, looks really good. the sphere the earth? looks almost planet like - or just a marbly metalic ball?
ah, it stops in front so you can read it? maybe add an ease in and ease out so its not so jerky, when I first looked at it I thought the animation was skipping/stalling.

its in the size limit (19.4bytes) so i dont think i can add more frames, i tried to make the rotation smoother but i get files bigger. and yes, its quite basic, but it stops so you can read it.
thx for the revision;)
Mr. Anderson
Jul 24, 2002, 09:32 AM
well, one thing you can do is reduce the colors - could give you more frames, but you might have to make the sphere a solid color, it would take some tweaking, regardless.
but don't get me wrong, these are my own personal opinions, its still a good tar - now you have to work on getting the several hundred more posts to show it off! :D

This thread is about to be the second avatar contest on the macrumors.com forums! :p
Anyway, I would love to make a 'tar for you too dreg. I really like to make 'tars, but right now I'm very busy with some web design work... :(
It looks like you've got enough to choose from already, though... ;)

I'll make a bet with you that the second contest really heats up - now that there are more members and so many people saw what you can come up with.
I'm thinking it will be in Novemeber or December.

nice stuff vitruvius - I've been playing around with a new qtvr app I found
CubicQTVR - you ever heard of it? It make 360° hor/vert qtvrs - very cool stuff - you can find the app on the apple quicktime page - check it out -
its called MakeCubic
here's a test render I did yesterday, canned models, rendered in Lightwave - I'm going to work on the link/navigation aspects today or tomorrow with some of my own stuff.

wow! thats nice very "atmospheric" feeling, is it a free App?, where exactly in Apples website did u find it? ( by the way, have u played Myst3 Exile? the interface its based exactly in the CubicVR, it has a very nice renders) what kind of material do u produce in lightwave to create a CubicVR (ahh i forgot, this morning i get myself a copy of LightWave 7.5 and im starting to learn how to use it, it has kind of weird interface, i guest it comes from the Amiga days-im right?-but very powerfull as i see)
Mr. Anderson
Jul 25, 2002, 02:15 PM
lightwave is really nice - I've been using it for 3-4 years now. You just got a copy eh? Well, I've just figured out how to do the basics with the CubicQTVR - there are ways to make it better. I'll make a sample scene that you can use if you want - although I'm going to tweek it a bit later to get better results.
Right now I've got it making 6 images, one for each side of the cube, but if you render 24 images - 2x2 on each side, paste them together to make 6 images, the distortion is significantly less - I think. Thats another test.
I've got a really old animation I did in Lightwave online - www.flossgordon.com - try the big one if you can - its better.
I'll find the link and post it for you.

here's the link - its near the bottom of the page - I figured this might be better than the actual link because of all the other stuff they have there. Something else might be of interest to you. Good luck and post something when you get it done -

I had too much work to do today to try and figure out the hotspot tutorial - I'll get around to that soon - but, yes, it does have a great potential - I look forward to using it. Let me know if you get anything uploaded, I'd love to see it.
As for FlossGordon - well, its been an on going project - eventually I'll have a little more than a teaser trailer up - I hope sometime in the near future.
