I have a friend who just got a brand-new 3GS with a week 38 date of manufacture. I understand that he may or not be able to jb it depending on the bootrom version. I guess the only way to know for sure is to put the phone into dfu mode and check the iboot #, right? If so, I know how to get it into dfu mode but I'm not sure what to do beyond that because he is a Windows user. Any help is appreciated.

Just try to JB it, nothing can happen. If it doesn't work just restore it.

That's what I told him - nothing to lose by trying.

Yes it can, I have a week 38 and I have jailbroken it. But my week 40, I just won't try....

Just had my 3G[S] 16GB white delivered from Apple online store UK.
It's a week 38 wohooo. I shall confirm with all that I can JB it.
Ordered it on 19th Oct (and used Quidco).
FYI package says Syncreon Technology on the box, maybe thats who distributes for Apple UK. they abviously have a few older bootrom ones knocking about. or maybe I just got very lucky. I'm made up.
will be putting it in a Incipio Feather Neon Green - it's gonna be sick!
******UPDATE******
Yes, it is now beautifully 3.1.2 Jailbroken. Using Geohot's blackra1n. PwnageTool caused issues with mine.
