Anyone who buys an iPod through HMV's website and hopes to stock it using downloads from the same source is going to be disappointed.
Yeah, but how many people would jump to that assumption?

Would I assume that every computer sold by CompUSA (Mac and PC and PDA) can run every piece of software in the store?

Would I assume that every car stereo sold in a local electronics store will fit every car?

Why would people assume that music downloaded from HMV must be playable in every portable device they sell?

Do these same people randomly put gasoline and diesel in their cars just because the local filling station sells both?

Possibly quite a few. This (http://www2.hmv.co.uk/pmenu/downloads) is the main page for the HMV/OD2 music download service, there is a link to iPods (and no compatible players) on it. The situation isn't entirely hopeless since CD burning is offered, but then again the OD2 service requires Windows and IE.
