Is Apple lying about powerbook specs?

I just ran a tech tool pro test on my video card and it said that it was a Radeon 9600 128mb card. Now Apple says its a 9700 and I know the 9700 is largely based on the 9600 chip so it could just be that tech tool doesn't recognize it properly...but it is interesting. Apple system profiler identifies it as ATY,RV360M11 which as far as I know is the same as everyone else with the current 15 and 17 inch. Anyone know whats up?

I was wondering about this, too. When I was playing Call of Duty (or maybe it was RTCW) I checked the game driver and it, too, recognized my video card as a radeon 9600.

The software is misreading the video card. This kinda thing is common when hardware is updated.

I understand your concern, but your topic header is really misguided. Why would a company as well known as Apple EVER lie about the components they use? Especially when it's very easy to determine just what kind of card you have by opening your computer...

Blame ATI, not Apple

the Radeon 9700 Mobility isn't the same thing as a desktop Radeon 9700 (which are 8 pixel pipelines), it IS roughly the same thing as a desktop 9600 series card (four pixel pipelines)

i wouldn't say that apple lied? thats a bit extreme, they wouldn't get away with lying about specs though. As someone said earlier it is probably an issue the driver or maybe that the 9600 and the 9700 use a similar or the same driver. lots of graphics cards in the same series use the same or similar drivers.
i wouldnt worry about it too much if everything runs ok.

I wouldn't be too worried about it. Apple system profiler states my card as a Rage even thought it is a Radeon 7500.

The card is a Mobility 9700, it is based off of the RV360 Core and is revision M11. It is basically the equivalent to a 9600XT desktop card.
