i did a whois in the terminal to aol.com and got the follwing...

i did i whois lookup from whois.net and i got something different

What this means is that people (using the term loosely) have registered similar sounding names to aol.com, such as the aol. ... .com domain names you saw. whois defaults to pattern searching. If you read the warning text below when you run it, it explains this (at least on my machine). If you use the alternate syntax

whois "=AOL.COM"

you'll see that the funny looking DN's have different owners than AOL. If you do the same for Yahoo.com, you get the same results....
