ok so my parents are going to italy and my mom has her iphone 3g with 2.2.1 and wants to unlock it to use there..i couldnt find step by step directions to update with that firmware..so if someone could please help me out it would be well apprecaited thanks!!

Download the 3.1.2 IPSW and then download and run Pwnage Tool to make a custom IPSW for 3.1.2, and restore to it in iTunes. This (http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=4254) guide has a link to download the firmware, and a link to download the jailbreak software. :)

First of all check the firmware... If its not 4.xx.xx then you will be best to restore to 3.0 firmware.. This will update your baseband to 4.26.08, then as suggested above, download 3.1.2 ipsw, use Pwnage to create custom IPSW - this will prevent baseband being updated to 5.11.07 which can NOT be unlocked - once you are on jailbroken custom 3.1.2 with 4.26.08 install UltraSn0w and jobs done...
IŽve jsut done exaclty this on my 3G which was 2.01, the least hassle method was to go standard 3.0 then custom route...

my firmware is 02.30.03..do i need to update it 3.0??

Techinically no, you could just use an old version of YellowSn0w, but IŽd recommend standard restore to 3.0 so you do get a new baseband (Do not go to 3.1 or you WILL LOSE UNLOCK)....

Also UltraSn0w (unlock for 4.26.08) is prooving more successful than the previous yellowsn0w...

Update to 3.1.2 via Pwnage Tool. Might as well.

No, update to 3.0 normally, download the official 3.0 ipsw (http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-6578.20090617.VfgtU/iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw)
Save it to your desktop then in iTunes Option+Restore... This will present you with a window to select the IPSW... Navigate to your desktop where the 3.0ipsw is...
Let it restore and when finished repeat but with your custom 3.1.2 IPSW.. this will leave you with 3.1.2 but Baseband 4.26.08 which you can then Ultrasn0w and use any sim in...

make sure you do NOT update to a clean version of 3.1.2! there is currently no unlock for the baseband that is included!

the way they said above works... but i do not believe that you couldnt find it anywhere...
