View Full Version : How to get the new Magic Mouse to move/track faster?

I just turned on my new 27" iMac and can't seem to get the mouse to go any faster. I've got it turned up all the way on the tracking speed. This display is huge and I don't like having to pick up the mouse just so I can get to the other side of the screen.
Any ideas?

Here (http://fplanque.com/info-tech/apple/make-your-mouse-faster-on-mac-os-x) is some kinda guide to make it go faster but I don't know does it work with Magic Mouse. You're not the only one complaining about its speed but maybe 10.6.2 will fix it

Thanks, but I tried it at the setting 6 that they had and nothing new. I then tried 10 and nothing new either.
Do you know if you need to restart the computer or what to make it take effect?

You can try that but I doubt it'll make difference

Try Steermouse or USB Overdrive. It is well documented that OS X has a different mouse curve. Even when the mouse software is available I doubt you will get the performance you are expecting.

I'll 2nd Steermouse, have used them for a few years now and never had a problem, also they'll probably upgrade there drivers for the new mouse soon if it has not already been done

This is the first review I have read on the
new mouse and I don't like what I am
seeing thus far. Slow tracking? Not good.
Sure it will be fixed down the road.
So, how do you guys like the mouse?

I like it, to make it faster, I just pick it up, like I have done with every mouse, doesn't bother me

Love to read some full-fleged reviews from you
guys on the mouse.
I have a Logitech MX Mouse and I am wondering
if the Magic Mouse is going to give it a run for
the money.

The magic mouse as of now, is not perfect in no way at all. I think once apple updates some software and adds new gestures, it will be pretty good. But my only complaint is that there isn't a unique gesture for expose, and the mouse is a tad to small.

the mouse moves quickly and very responsive if you swipe it fast but the tracking I'm talking about is when your just browsing about some web site or folders. It just doesn't move fast enough in my opinion and I hate picking it up because it's starting to hurt the back of my hand.

You are very correct. It's unbearably slow. I have it connected to my 2006 MacBook Pro and it just crawls. My USB MSFT mouse, connected to the same machine... is a lot faster at tracking.
The Terminal setting option discussed above does not affect the magic mouse, that must be a different preference. If you whack it up to 10 and plug in a USB mouse you just watch how ridiculously fast your mouse moves. :)
I hope they fix that soon, or it's going back for me. It's just unusable at that tracking speed.... at least for me!

Indeed, same here.
Shouldn't be too hard to fix that though.

Track speed is very slow for me too... this is unacceptable. I installed USB Overdrive and it definitely made the track speed faster but I lost all the multi-touch features, including scrolling. However their website says the following :
Apple Magic Mouse note: I just received my unit from the Apple Store and I'm already working on it. I'll post an update as soon as it's ready.
So hopefully USB Overdrive has an update soon or Apple does, otherwise I'm returning this thing.

I think the Mighty Mouse also had the same issue with its tracking being really slow even all the way turned up.

Dang. So there is no change in cursor movement with the new mouse. Even for usage on a 15.4-inch MacBook Pro, I find that movement is slow which is why I've stopped using the Mighty Mouse and gone with my Razer and Microsoft optical mouse (Razer has driver support which doesn't really count by Microsoft is just PnP)

part of the hassle for me is the weight. My elcheapo USB wired mouse is light as a feather so I can flick my hand of vooom (brand x OS). The MM beside tracking slow is kinda a fight weightwise. But, can be got used to, I even got better at it today. The ergonomics on scrolling (up and down is all I've tried) is great, basically like a trackball I'd guess.

See the comment about 2/3 of the way down. Someone had it working fine until they installed the software update and then it slowed to a crawl...
So at least we know it CAN be fixed (or indeed broken!) with a software update!

I found a great article explaining why the mighty mouse and magic mouse have bad track speeds and the solution is to install something like USB overdrive : http://db.tidbits.com/article/8893

I wish it did for me. Makes no difference at all to my tracking speeds. It's like the mouse is totally ignoring it.
I did wonder if the combination of my USB mouse being connected at the same time was upsetting it (the speed setting was DEFINITELY affecting the USB mouse.) However I disconnected it and rebooted with no effect. :( Looks like I'm returning my magic mouse until they fix this problem.

I don't get all the complaints. I'm using it now and it isn't THAT slow.. at all.

It's a tolerance thing. Apple's max setting is equivalent to Windows setting at a quarter. Tracking speed in Windows is way better than what is offered in OS X.

No, it's ridiculously slow.
