Bush Says: 'I Want to Be the Peace President'
Tue Jul 20, 2004 08:32 PM ET

By Adam Entous

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Reuters) - After launching two wars, President Bush said on Tuesday he wanted to be a "peace president" and took swipes at his Democratic rivals for being lawyers and weak on defense.

With polls showing public support for the war in Iraq in decline, Bush cast himself as a reluctant warrior and assured Americans they were "safer" as he campaigned in the battleground states of Iowa and Missouri against Democrat John Kerry and his running mate, former trial lawyer John Edwards.

"The enemy declared war on us," Bush told a re-election rally in Cedar Rapids. "Nobody wants to be the war president. I want to be the peace president... The next four years will be peaceful years." Bush used the words "peace" or "peaceful" a total of 20 times.

Bush has called himself a "war president" in leading the United States in a battle against terrorism brought about by the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on America. "I'm a war president. I make decisions here in the Oval Office in foreign policy matters with war on my mind," he said in February.

Despite a surge in attacks in Iraq and U.S. warnings that al Qaeda is plotting another major strike, Bush said U.S.-led wars in Afghanistan and Iraq had already made America safer, and that his re-election would let him finish the job.

yet again, bush implies a link between 9/11 and iraq.

I wasn't sure how to take the title of the thread, so I thought it might be a thread to post all the (numerous) examples Bush provides in this regard...

My brief contribution:
...SNIP... During the day in Iowa and Missouri, Bush delivered his positive and negative themes. In the morning, he did not mention Kerry once as he outlined successes abroad and at home.

"We're marching to peace," he told the flag-waving crowd. And the economy, "is growing at nearly the fastest rate in 20 years," he said. ...SNIP

As for the content of your post, zim...any response almost seems so commonplace cynical as to warrant a cliche...

...mine happens to be who is more indictable here: They that would fool or those who allow themselves to be fooled?

feel free to substitute "pityful" for "indictable" ...

here's another: (Excerpt from Cheney speech in Ohio)
We're looking forward to a spirited contest this fall. And when you talk to your friends and neighbors about the campaign, ask them to think about all that has happened since George W. Bush was elected President of the United States. These last three-and-a-half years have brought some serious challenges to our country. And we're meeting those, every one of them, with strength and resolve. Today, the American people can be confident of a brighter future; of a stronger economy; and a nation that is more secure, because of the character and the leadership of our President, George W. Bush. (Applause.)

The President has taken decisive leadership to defend the American people against the dangers of this new era. In the 34 months since our nation was attacked, America has led a global campaign, hunting down the terrorists where they plot and plan, so that we do not face them with armies of firefighters, police, and medical personnel on the streets of our own cities. (Applause.) In Afghanistan, we removed the brutal Taliban from power and destroyed the camps where terrorists trained to kill Americans. In Iraq, America and our allies rid the Iraqi people of a murderous dictator, and rid the world of a gathering threat to our peace and security. By liberating both these nations, we replaced breeding grounds for terrorism with emerging democracies, and we have made the American people more secure. (Applause.)

We've also overcome serious challenges to our economy. When the President and I took office, the stock market was declining, and the economy was sliding toward recession. Then, on 9/11, terrorists struck our nation and shook our economy once again. We faced a basic decision -- to leave more money with families and businesses, or to take more of your tax dollars for the federal government. President Bush made his choice. He proposed and delivered tax relief -- not once, not twice, but three times. (Applause.) SNIP...

interesting times...
