If my ps3 hdd dies, will I be able to redownload all of my ps store purchases for free? or will I have to re buy?

Is it tied to your accoutn I take it?

Yep you simply go into the psn store and choose 'view downloads' icon on top right and it shows everything you have ever downloaded / bought. Simply choose download again.

This way you can download on multiple ps3's.
