I'd like to split my TC into a backup drive and an external hard drive. Apple support tells me they don't support this function, but it's possible. Anyone have any experience doing this?

I don't believe there's support for re-partitioning the drive, but you can mix the Time Machine backup with data files. The TM backup is in a single, sparse.bundle file. Keep in mind that any other files will reduce the space available for Time Machine - essentially keeping it from going as far back "in time".
