Needed help how to check iphone software

I just bought a iphone 3g,the phone is in recovery mode,is there a way to check what software version with out do the restore from itune or update.Thanks in advance for any help.I don't have At&t sim card.

Nope not that I know of. You could always try and restore to 3.0 and see if it completes.

Hes in recovery mode.

Thanks I try to do the restored and get the 1015 code so I guess it had 3.1version correct me if I'm wrong.

Get it into DFU mode (google to find out how), and restore to the firmware you want. Make sure you have the correct firmware -- I find it most reliable to download from this site: http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/

Youre not going to want to update to 3.1 because you wont get service. Go to 3.0, then upgrade with a custom IPSW.
