Apple TV on Timer

Hello,

Because Apple TV is constantly "on" (even though it's on standby), can anyone see a problem with putting it on a timer plugged into the surge protector? It would turn off the ATV and then turn it on when I am home. Less energy and less heat sort of thing. I'll sync it when I am home.

I am just curious if anyone has had any problems (damage, breakdowns) with turning their ATV on and off, instead of keeping it in standby.

ATV is running OSX, unexpected power loss may result in corruption to the disk drive -- data loss & worse.

Definitely don't do this.

When it restarts it'll pause at the language or restart screen. It's a low-powered device. I wouldn't worry about it.

My father-in-law has his apple tv plugged into the componant power outlet on his receiver, so his is almost always in an off state until he turns his receiver on.

He's had a few sync issues, but it's otherwise fine. It's been like this since last Christmas.

When I want to turn off my AppleTV I just cut the power at the plug (I only have it powered up when I want to use it) - with no clear 'shutdown' option or power button, I've assumed that's how Apple intended their users to turn them off.

Mine's about 18 months old and I've never had problems. I think the timer idea is great - go for it.

If your interest in controlling your Atv a better way you should try one of these. Its a surge protector that has controlled outlets.

I have my tv plugged into the master plug. So when my tv is on it turns on my atv which is plugged into the switched portion. When the tv is turned off you can imagine what happens to the Atv:D
