Help - do I still need MacDrive to access external HD even with Snow Leopard?

I upgraded to Windows 7 this week under Bootcamp. Previously I had XP and MacDrive (purchased pre Snow Leopard). But true to SL's promise, I found that I was able to view my OSX files without reinstalling MacDrive. Unfortunately what I haven't been able to do is view either of my external HFS formatted hard drives. 🙁 I've tried both under Firewire and USB. I'll hear the "connected" sound, it says it's ready for use and the button to safely eject is there...but I just don't see the drives under My Computer. If I go to "Devices and Printers" in Control Panel I do see it, but I can't open it - only view properties.

Is the HFS support SL gave only limited to OSX itself? Do I really need to use MacDrive again? Or has someone else been able to view HFS external HD's without it (in which case something's wrong)?

FYI, I inserted my Snow Leopard disc and installed all the bootcamp drivers.

btw, one other question - can I copy a file to OSX without MacDrive or is it read only?

It's read-only at this time. I, personally, like this... Since if you want to copy files, it might be easier to use a service like Dropbox.

I'd rather not let Windows have write access to my Mac partition... that way, if I get a Windows virus, it's stuck on the Windows partition, unable to affect/damage my Mac files.

Edit: I'm fairly certain that I've been able to access my external drives just fine in Windows.
 
Bump - still no joy with viewing my external drives on W7. 🙁 Confirmed they still appear properly on Snow Leopard. Any clue? It's aggravating considering I have all my videos stored there (my MacBook's only 120 GB).
